I played all the original ones(Rocket Knight 2 on Genesis being my favorite) and I'll stay skeptical about how the game plays. It could be good, right? Visually from the snapshots, the graphics, the backgrounds, and the font they use for the score all remind me of a Flash based game. Maybe they're just trying to make it look more kid-friendly, or they're just cheap.

The (fairly lengthy)demo caught me by surprise: it's actually quite good! I wasn't looking forward to it from what I've seen in pics and trailers but it's quite charming.

played through a bit on hard

It's a fun game. The controls are great and I really appreciated the "map game inputs before launching" menu that popped up the first time (PC VERSION). Made it a breeze to hook up the saturn pad whereas often these windows live things have me trying to figure out which buttons on the saturn pad are mapped to which X360 button.

But yeah, the game is too easy and too cute. Probably just speaks to the era we're in now.

The shmup stage was good fun. I can see some good potential for 16:9 Hori shmups.

There's a Gold Sparkster/Hard+ difficulty you can choose after you beat Arcade mode on Hard (making sure to fulfill the 'secret damage' requirements on all but the last boss). You only get 4 hearts of health. It's not quite as relentless as RKA's Crazy Hard, but it should provide a decent challenge. Taking a quick look so far, the stages seem the same as Hard difficulty but the bosses seem to be faster/more aggressive in their attack patterns...

What's so weird about Rocket Knight Adventure 2? That's what Sparkster was called?

Nothing wierd about the title, just wierd that that was your favourite of the series. It's the worst of the bunch.

The demo's surprisingly good! The fight with Axel is a bit lame, but apart from that everything is well-designed and Sparkster handles really nicely. The boost has its own button and charges up by itself, which feels strange at first (natch) but I can see it becoming quite practical in later stages. I really don't get on with faux-orchestral versions of 'classic' tunes, but the music here was still fun and charming. Think I'll buy it.

(I was a bit puzzled by the chaining system in the shooter section. You lose your chain about as quickly as you would in a modern shmup, but the attack waves are 5-10 seconds apart, so your multiplier only really counts towards the guy next to the one you're attacking. :P)

I liked the graphics, music, and pace of it more than the other ones. The first one was good but it just seemed kinda slow to me. :?

Chain also increases value of gems, so you can milk some extra points by shooting enemies and collecting stuff in right order. Gems also extend chain, and sometimes it's possible to use this to chain multiple waves (but I don't think it's possible to chain whole stage).

Cheers, chap - I saw that the gems were counting toward it on my next go, aye. The meter goes down faster the higher the multiplier is, too.

Each to their own, but IMO the original creamed the lacklustre MD sequel in every department.

I agree. The first is one of the best platformers I've ever played.
