Best STG to play using a dance mat

Post by TrevHead (TVR) »

I was reading the shmup theory blog today and it featured a bloke beating mario bros with a dance mat vid on you tube. I watched the vgid and wondered what shmups would be possible using a dance mat aswell. As since the guy likes to beat other games with a mat he might have a go at a shmup if it is possible to do so.

Anyway can any of u guys think of a good shmup that is possible to beat with a dance mat. I was thinking of maybe a shmup from the 1990s just before manic and bullet hell was created. I guess whatever shmup it is it would need to have simple bullet patterns that can be dodged easily or a shmup with plenty of safe spots that is easy if the stages are memorised. Plus it would need autofire or a slow button tap to fire the main weapon as a gradius type autofire would get tireing quite fast.

So guys any ideas on such a shmup?

heres the vid check it out (u can see just how stoked he gets when he realises hes gonna do it)

I once played Gradius V with dance mats, and even though I was just controlling and a "co-pilot" was shooting and using power-ups, we never could take out the first stage boss (on one credit). If you want to play totally solo, then good luck with firing :D Try playing Recca or some other game where a special attack charges automatically ;)

All the annoyance of ship inertia is back, as gravity forces the player to keep pressing one or other of the controls. Once you're in the safe spot in the incoming bullet mesh, you'll need a chin-up bar to stay there.

While you're at it, why not stick another dance mat on the ceiling above the chin-up bar, so you can press the bomb button with your head?

suggestions:
- Battle Garegga/Armed Police Batrider (for survival, not score)
- Samidare's Extra Stage (shield-only)

Yea Recca looks to be a game playable with a mat.

If someone can do DDP with a guitarhero controller, you can do it with a dance mat. Might be annoying with no autofire though.

Hey all, Nick Hagman a.k.a. Nario here, the guy who beat Castlevania and SMB1 with a dance pad and who is currently two Robot Masters into Mega Man 2.

I got a message on YouTube from TrevHead requesting that I play a SHMUP, and I think Recca will be my choice, eventually. :) To be honest, I've actually played Recca before on a regular controller, and I've even considered trying it with a dance pad before, but now my interest has been peaked to a point where, yeah, I'm going to do it someday.

I just thought I'd let you all know!

If you want to be really evil, hook up two dance pads for some Robotron.

seeing as how touhou can be beat by simply moving up and down...i think a beatmania/IIDX controller used to beat every touhou is in call now. i tried playing espgaluda with one and barely beat the first stage. the turn table limits you to moving up and down only. i've never scratched so much, if only i had auto scratch on like the rest of the cool kids that have no skill

It's a negative response, you idiot. Do you think bad threads won't get replies? No, they'll get replies because they're bad threads.

Well, good luck with that, I can't get too far in that game with a NES pad. Are you going to allow yourself to use your hands for the fire button?

Oh, and congrats on CV and Mario.

Had a cheap set of soft pads from Wild Katz and a good thick foam set made by red octane a while back. Trust me, you try any games (even dance games made for them) with the cheap ones its nearly impossible to play.

I haven't really checked out his other videos, but I assume he's got his pad modded in some way to increase the life, responsiveness, and stability of his pad.

Back when I was playing DDR I had mine taped to a plank of particle board, and could play pretty much anything.

No, I couldn't allow myself to do that. I know that Pump It Up: Exceed requires you to press four buttons at once with both your hands and feet (especially on Starian), but I'm using a DDR pad and I don't believe that hands should be used for DDR games, even if the games I'm using the pad on aren't from the DDR series, let alone on the NES.

Actually, it's a stock pad! I originally got it when I purchased DDR: Mario Mix for the GameCube, and I still use it! Not once has it been repaired or modded, and it's actually got a few bruises on it too!

And no, I won't settle for Madcatz or Pelican or Red Octane what have you: only the original pads from Bemani/Konami, because they're seriously the best.
