Taking a break from shmups Edit: No more break

Post by Cthulhu »

For the last few weeks I've been on a big shmup trip, but I think it's time for me to throw in the towel and take a break for a while. Although I pulled off a lot of stuff I never thought was possible (lots of 1CCs, some new high scores) , I seem to be making zero progress these last few days. I die quickly, can't even get as far as I usually do (in anything...) and feel more annoyed about playing shmups than enjoying them. I need a breather... anyone else ever feel like that once in a while?

Once in a while: yes! :D

I ussually get back to playing racing games or other games I can enjoy without having to score or survive!

Getting back to shmups after some time feels like a fresh start at the genre and I often make personal hi-scores at those moments.
Too much of anything (even shmups) will finally take the enjoyment out of it I guess. .

I usually go for some classic platform action games when I get tired of shmups. Feels good to have solid ground under your feet after beeing up in the air for so long, if you know what I mean.

When I get tired of shmups, I usually take a break and play same Vs. games like... hmm.. Twinkle Star Sprites. I guess I have no cure...

Other suggestions:-

Games: StarSweep (Vs Puzzle), Umihara Kawase (platformS)
Anime: Full Metal Panic, Soukyuu no Fafner, School Rumble

I like to keep a couple of RPG's/adventures ticking over. They serve as a nice change of pace from whatever shooter is currently relieving me of my self-esteem.

This week, Armed Police Batrider...
"What the hell kind of a two-bit operation are they running out of this treehouse, Cooper? I have seen some slip-shod, backwater burgs, but this place takes the cake."

oh god! sta AWAY from puzzle star sweep.

You want a decent VS puzzler, Magical Drop 2/3 or Battle Balls will work nicely.

When I played too much games from one genre, I often need a break from them.
Some years before I really overplayed all the fighting games. Now I can't see them anymore. They aren't very exciting anymore too me, always the same tactics, always the same moves... bah!

I had a RPG break too, but I have already recovered from that.

Sometimes I need a short break from Shmups too, but I haven't overplayed them yet.

I am no Shoot'em Up only player, I try to play as many different types of games as possible: like Beat'em Ups, Shoot'em Ups, RPGs, FPS, Puzzles, Jump'n Runs, Action Adventure, Racing Games and others...

But this year I was playing mainly highscore games (many shmups).

I'll usually play something from Taito like Bubble Bobble (the series has lots to choose from), an old fighting game, or some Konami game like CV. You just have to break away sometimes, for awhile I found myself playing too much Gradius.

I normally play a platform game/side scroller or a fighting game,when taking a breather.
Lately I'm currently taking a break from actual games atm, I'm just playing some quick games of Gradius here and there about 5-10mins.

I never stick to one style of game. Along with the Cave/Raizing goodness of the last few months i've been playing quite a lot of 2d fighters. Oh and "God Of War" has just came out over here. I guess I don't like to stick with one genre, for exactly the same reasons as you are feeing right now.
However because you've been playing shooters constantly for a while now, your skill will have far exheeded mine.
If you are going to abandon shooting games for a while, make sure not to abandon Shmups.com forums ok! And I hope your move back to the states goes smoothly.

Cthulhu, come back to BYOAC and work on your cab! :D PS2->Jamma is completely do-able, and then you'd be able to play Mushieme on your own terms when it comes out later this month.

I didn't play any shmups from about September '04 until June '05. As a high school teacher with a photography job on the side, things could get hectic. I then got back to shmupping when I decided to buy Giga Wing Generations on a whim. Though I was considering selling my game collection on eBay since I hadn't touched them for a long time, and I needed quick cash for photo equipment.

But before my side job, I'd alternate between RPGing and Shmupping. Now I can't play RPGs anymore since they're becoming too consuming and I get annoyed with sidequests. What ever happened to the good old-fashioned linear RPGs like the first four Phantasy Star games? So no more new RPGs for me...at least until Sega releases the remakes of the PS series onto the PS2 (in America).

I just can't keep up with today's games. Good thing Shmups are simple and good for a quick 15-30 minutes of time-killing (while many shmups can be finished in 30 minutes, Cannon Spike can be an even quicker 15-minute heck-of-a-lot-of-fun from start to finish).

Lately all my breaks from shmups have been 2d games. I love pinball games, puzzle games (lately: Meteos and Bombastic), some rhythm games (Amplitude, Taito Drum Master), and 2D platformers (Kirby, of course). I used to enjoy 3D games as well, esp. Halo and racing games-- I'll probably get back into them, and Pikmin 2, someday.

The last time I took a long break I decided I didn't need to keep all my games... some of the ones I sold took me -forever- to get back (*cough* Blast Wind *cough*) so I'm not going to make that mistake again.

I'll keep coming to the forums since I have a lot of friends here, but yeah, it's high time for some nice RPG goodness I think. Maybe a few platformers would be nice too...

Yeah, I needed a bit of a breather this week myself so I started playing Zelda: TOoT again for the first time in 6 years (man, this game has aged amazingly well), bought P.N.03 which is a blast and will get to work soon on (finally) beating Viewtiful Joe. Might get Kirby DS next Thursday when I get paid.

In a few weeks after Mushi is released I will be refreshed and ready for shmups again. 8)

No, see, gamers don't go outside. Gamers have no social life, and they lock themselves in their room playing one specific game until their timer as reached 99:99:99 and they've unlocked everything. Afterwards, they possess the power to say "I've mastered this game." without lying.

And of course, all gamers don't go outside unless it's to buy a game. Because we're all nerds who don't bother with the outside world.

...right.

Seriously now. Cthulhu lives in japan. What will he gain by going outside in the middle of japan that won't lead to endless spending sprees, which would probably revolve around little japanese shops that have "bins" of consoles, sorted by quality?

Shut up man, quit being so defensive. I'm not attacking anybody except caucasian folk who throw "yoko" and "tate" at me every time they post. This dude is alright, I'm just giving him a hard time 8) We're all gamers here.

I'm not fucking defensive. You're supposed to give people hard times in the appropriate manner, not "LOLZ DURF GO OUTSIDE!!! :B" and expect people not to care.

What?!??!?

You mean there really exists something else outside my TV and monitor?!?!?
Like human beeings and other life forms?!?!
And you mean sexuality is something else than sitting home alone and watching hentai animes?!?!?

@kidneythief:
I have read all your posts. (all done today) And you really seem to me like a fake account, someone who just want to provoke a bit. I may be wrong, though. Anyway if you are "real" or not. If you don't like people on this forums, so why bother posting here.

That "Tate", "Yoko" stuff you mocking about is really nonsense. I never use these words too, bescause I wouldn't roTATE my TV. But why offend other people for just using that words? You can say terms like "4:5" or "Rotated TV mode" if you don't like this words and no one would tell you to call it "Tate" or "Yoko".

You just offend others users here for no reason. Just posting stupid stereotypes like "people playing games / watching anemis have no friends". Guess you could include yourself to that stereotype, afterall you are playing shmups. So you must have no friends or life, like us all here...

Sorry if I got a bit offending, but that's just my opinion, right? ;)
