You just need the right files, which I'm afraid we're not allowed to point you to here.

Lu. is a great game despite it is quite short with one stage. It has some good paced music. You can download the game here:

Crimzon Clover is great as well. It is still a demo, but worth it. You can download it here:

My personal favorite is the X.X games, mentioned somewhere in the thread.
If you like Einhander for PS1, you might IrK because they have similar concepts of weaponry.
For abstract shooters, maybe you want to try shmups by ABA games aka Kenta Cho.
Just my 2 cents.

There's no standards in shmups. Only what most people prefers.
Euroshmups are inferior, but not all of them sucks.
Jap shmups are superior, but not all of them great.

Google for a 'mame bios pack' or something like that, I know they're floating around. It'll make things much easier.Avatar Ignis wrote:Any recommendations on an emulator? The one i currently have is only able to run dodonpachi and guwange, and i'm really curious to try Dragon blaze and Dimahoo

Dunno if anyone mentioned Kenta Cho's stuff to you, but: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/index_e.html
Also, about MAME, get an older version than .136. I know .128 is great for Radiant Silvergun [.129+ is much slower, and IIRC .135 had some pretty nasty graphics problems with it], and most roms floating around the web for anything are in the .106-.131 range.
Oh, and play some Mars Matrix [MAME it, unless you have a Dreamcast].

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Thanks again for all the replies, everyone. I've got quite a list of games to try now, although like a couple people above have suggested, I'll only be playing a few at a time.

Heh, I got a nasty virus on my PC while looking for the Touhou games...but I'm up and running again now.
I got MAME working now, and just finished my first run through of DoDonpachi. Whew, looks like I have a lot of work to do on that one. I got about 8 or 10 others for MAME as well, but I'll take my time trying them out.
Oh yeah, there's no difficulty setting for these ROMs, is there? (DoDonpachi in particular)

Re: New SHMUP Player
DoDonpachi: hold the service button (default F2) for a bit, and then you get an operator menu. you can change settings from there, including difficulty. Other games have have similar systems, while most use DIP switches.

Cool, thanks. Is there any way to enable save states so I can practice a particular level? I get an error using <shift> + <F7>

I wont list any games cause the majority of the games I was going to list someone has already listed but if you cant spend a lot of money on games or consoles check your local craigslist. Sometimes you can score consoles on the cheap and just buy the games off here or the evilbay. I scored a number of systems that way..sega saturn, genesis, n64, gamecube kiosk, etc. etc.

Re: New SHMUP Player
So, it's been about 3 months now and I'm still really enjoying shmups...so I figured it'd be worth it to drop $80 and pick up Mushihimesama Futari for the 360. Ordered it last night from Play Asia.
Unfortunately, I've read a lot of complaints about PA taking forever to ship stuff (site says usually ships within 24 hrs). Was that mainly a problem for new games that are low on stock? Or is it still going to take a while for me to get it?
I'm still able to modify my order, so should I cancel and order from NCSX instead since it would ship from within the states?

CANCEL and get it from NCS. It'll take about 3 days from NCS, and about two weeks from PA.

Depends how fast the Hong Kong post gets it to you. Play-Asia themselves ship pretty quick so if you intend to cancel it, do it soon. HK post is slow as balls.

Definitely do this. PA's standard shipping option is a little cheaper than NCSX's but is so much slower arriving to the states. Like I mentioned in the pre-order thread, NCSX + USPS = a winning combination. I find USPS a little more consistent and reliable than UPS, not to mention that it's cheaper as well.evil_ash_xero wrote:CANCEL and get it from NCS. Alright, thanks for the info. I managed to cancel the PA order before it shipped, and have ordered from NCSX. Should be here by Thursday, I guess.
By the way...I'm super excited about playing Futari. Over the last couple months I've tried as many different shmups as I could afford to, and judging from the many videos I've watched Futari will be incredible. I've also preordered Deathsmiles, so I have that to look forward to in June as well.

Re: New SHMUP Player
I am like you, new to the genre a few months back, well, like 6-8 months back.
I started with RFA on 360, then picked up Raiden 4 on 360 as well.
From there, I used ebay to located Raiden 3 on PS2, as well as Castle Shikigami 2, and R-type Final.
Then, I picked up Futari 1.5 from NCSX, and 2 weeks ago I picked up Espgualda (sp) 2 from NCSX as well.
I have fallen in love with the genre and am now taking the next step of trying to build a MAME arcade, but that is proving to be a daunting task. Trying to find a start point is the challenge.
I live in Canada and have had great success dealing with NCSX, I highly recommend them.

Looks like we're playing a lot of the same games. I picked up Raiden IV a couple weeks ago but haven't put a whole lot of time into it yet. Still haven't tried RFA yet, but certainly will at some point. There are just too many games to try!
Of the ones you listed, I'm really enjoying Castle Shikigami 2 a lot. Still working on a 1cc, but making lots of progress. I can clear through the first or second part of the 5-1 boss, so just a little farther to go there. Definitely need to use my bombs more efficiently.
Have you played many of Cave's older games on MAME? I've been spending a lot of time with DoDonpachi lately, and must admit it is kicking my ass thoroughly at the moment.
How have you been doing with Futari 1.5 so far? I'm sure I'll pick up Galuda II before too long as well (not used to shelling out $80 for video games...).

Re: New SHMUP Player
In case anyone cares, I've been playing Mushihimesama Futari for the last few days and absolutely love it. I must admit I'm pretty awful, though. I can't even consistently make it to the 4th stage on 1.5 Original. Just downloaded BL today, though, and I feel much more optimistic about a 1CC in BL Original to start things off.
I'm actually getting some good enjoyment out of Novice Ultra, even though I was able to 1CC it with 3 lifes left on the first try. Not sure about Arrange, though. It'll be fun as a distraction every now and then, but I don't know if I'll get serious about scoring there. I actually got a somewhat decent score (I think) on my second run of Arrange Original -- 1,765,597,843.
Anyway, just wanted to post my appreciation of an awesome game. I'll be enjoying this one for a while.
BTW, my XBL gamertag is Piazzola11. I'd love some more people to share scores with

BL Original is definitely much easier if you're just going for 1CC, but what really makes it fun is playing for score. The bullets may not be as intense as Maniac or God, but flying a few pixels away from every enemy just to suck out every gem is incredibly fun. Trying not to crash isn't as easy as it seems either. Be sure the download a few replays from the score attack leader board when you're starting to feel like you need some help. Truly an invaluable resource.Anesthetize wrote:In case anyone cares, I've been playing Mushihimesama Futari for the last few days and absolutely love it. I must admit I'm pretty awful, though. Heh, I keep telling myself I'm just going for the 1CC for now, but every run I end up going for score anyway and dying while point-blanking something. Might as well just try for score from the beginning instead of learning the game twice.njiska wrote:BL Original is definitely much easier if you're just going for 1CC, but what really makes it fun is playing for score. Re: New SHMUP Player
My last run was my best yet through the first two stages scoring, but then I somehow managed to die TWICE on the stage 3 midboss. I never die on him! I ended up not even getting to the stage 3 boss that run, but had a score of 128 mil. I haven't watched enough replays to see how that score stands at that point.njiska wrote: What kind of scores have you been seeing?
Re: New SHMUP Player
You're about where I'm at and Mushi is the first game I've been playing for score. Currently stand at 162 Mil at the start of Stage 4. Try to work on it one stage at a time. I'm usually not happy unless i break 38 Mil on the first stage.Anesthetize wrote:My last run was my best yet through the first two stages scoring, but then I somehow managed to die TWICE on the stage 3 midboss. Re: New SHMUP Player
Best run yet for me just now, although I held off just a bit on scoring. 194.8 mil at the stage 4 boss. I was stupid at the end, though; I died with 3 bombs in stock
I did manage to no-miss stage 3, though, with just one bomb during the stage and one on the boss.
That's three in a row where I've made it to stage 4, now, so I guess I need to start running that one in training as well.

AHHH! So close to the 1cc! Had Larsa down to about an eigth of her health with one more bomb but died before I could use it.
348 mil, though, which I guess isn't too terribly bad.
I'm pretty happy with my progress so far. I've only had the game a week now, and am using the 360 analog controller.

Re: New SHMUP Player
Woohoo! Finally got the 1cc (BL Original)!! I know it's nothing worth bragging about by any means but it surely feels nice to finally have beaten the game. I've been frustrated all week: ever since I died on Larsa with a bomb to spare and hardly any of her health remaining, I haven't even gotten to her again (after numerous attempts). In fact, I played through Score Attack about 7 times today and only made it to stage 5 twice -- the second time being the 1cc.
I must admit it was quite a measly score, though. 366 mil
I'm contemplating whether to stay in BL Orig. and work on improving the score or to move on and start working on the 1.5 1cc. Any opinions? Or, as an alternative, it might be worth a shot to start working on BL Maniac a bit. Scoring seems like a lot of fun in Maniac, and I really haven't spent much time on it at all yet.
