Dungeons & Dragons (and Retro Clones)
Dungeons & Dragons (and Retro Clones)
1. It's high time the greatest of all games had a thread.
2. The retro clones are badass.
3. Numbered lists are fun and easy.
Anybody else play?

(Well, it depends on which one you mean, I suppose.)
God you're gonna get demoted if you keep testing my faith like this.
Re: Dungeons & Dragons (and Retro Clones)
i played a fair amount of MERP back in the day - and regular Warhammer for battles.
The wife got into it about 6 years back, was stunned to find all the lead figures were now mainly plastic and cost more than the lead figures used to! :\

Re: Dungeons & Dragons (and Retro Clones)
I tried to get into Warhammer but i couldnt get anyone intrested enough to play with me. I had blood bowl but would of loved 40k or fantasy battle. Oh well, shame all my mate were either into motorbikes or video games, i was prolly viewed as that sad kid who nags everyone to play his wierd games.
Hmm i bet some of em would think the same if i ever tried to get them to play shmups lol so nothings really changed then

I played a fair bit of Blood Bowl too
actually, reminds me that i bought the X360 game - i'm sure it's naff compared to the board game, but probably worth a look.

I always have to laugh when I read stuff like this cause I managed to get a job with a club, which also just started running 4th eidtion D&D (oo segway). I just wish I could afford to grow my collections lol.TrevHead (TVR) wrote:I tried to get into Warhammer but i couldnt get anyone intrested enough to play with me
Blood Bowl is definitely my favourite of GW's specialist games, which are all great because they LEFT ALONE.
Re: Dungeons & Dragons (and Retro Clones)

(I didn't have any specific one in mind. Just the ability to get, essentially, out of print editions without resorting to second hand, grungy, yellowing books.)
There's also a knockoff on the Genesis.dcharlie wrote:actually, reminds me that i bought the X360 game - i'm sure it's naff compared to the board game, but probably worth a look.

Re: Dungeons & Dragons (and Retro Clones)
Huh, how did I miss the D&D part of the title?
Sure, it's interesting enough, never played any retro campaigns though. Tried to get something like a Version 3 take on "The Keep in the Borderlands" going but it ended up being "pop culture and in-jokes time with the DM"
The two campaigns I've been a part of recently had a problem - fascism, excessive amounts of it, and also DMs not understanding basic rules like "when you have to large creatures within range of a fireball (or other area of attack) they get the full damage, not partial," and stuff of that nature.
There was a campaign I sat in on some time back, cool people, good setting, pretty damn decent overall; too bad the DMs I was with just weren't nice people when DMing.

Re: Dungeons & Dragons (and Retro Clones)
Yeah a bad DM can really make it not worth going back. The times I've tried DMing I've tried to be more open, allowing such things are throwing the weresnake at a hobgoblin
. And then my powergaming friends/family try to take advantage of my kindness, and it just gets annoying. Then 6 months later I opt to do it all again lol

Re: Dungeons & Dragons (and Retro Clones)
Warhammer is probably an intimidating game for total newbies. Pretty rules heavy, lots of stuff to buy.I tried to get into Warhammer but i couldnt get anyone intrested enough to play with me.
lol.I suppose thats you favourite console ever!
Praystation, Exodus Box.
Don't let the fascism get to you. It comes with the territory of DMing. Making shit up instead of looking it up is often just a good way to keep things flowing.
Re: Dungeons & Dragons (and Retro Clones)
we were lucky in our MERP Group that we had three great DM's who would script great scenarios that were well balanced and tended to have great stories. There was a campaign I sat in on some time back, cool people, good setting, pretty damn decent overall; too bad the DMs I was with just weren't nice people when DMing.
Warhammer - lol - there's something about that game that brings out the worst in people. We had at least three amazing full on board tipping incidents.
Pre-Duel situation - Bugman takes fear test against generic Ogre - roll anything below 12 to pass. Friend rolls double 6. Uneasy silence. DM (friends brother) makes clucking sound, removes bugman from board, replaces with Clucken figure. Entire board goes flying.

Depends which one you look at. Fantasy is very rules heavy and take a while to get completely down.God wrote:Warhammer is probably an intimidating game for total newbies. 40k on the other hand has been so simplified that you learn the rule book in an afternoon. Guess which is more popular
