Investment advice.
Investment advice.
Hey. I'll be quick.
Searches have proven fruitless online. My bank can't help. I want to buy gold, but not in coins (Bullion/ingot). Given my status as a foreigner here in the USA, I've been told this is one of my best options against inflation and devaluation.
Can someone help or provide a hint?
Thanks.

Re: Investment advice.
I could never understand why people go to their bank for investment advice in the first place. It's like talking to a used car dealer for advice on buying a used car. How can anybody believe that would be a good idea!?Specineff wrote:My bank can't help.

Seriously.
Seriously.
What more can I say I wouldn't be here today if the old school didn't pave the way.
Re: Investment advice.
I'd look at the new lithium battery plants in Michigan first. I haven't been paying too close attention to Dorf autos but I recall they have had a tougher time than their non-bailout-accepting status suggested. Any new tech in the pipes and their inventory liability would be pretty major factors too, same for all the players.
Right now I'd get ready to put some money into BP.
They're headed for the basement; hopefully by the time the settlements are being paid out their stock price will only be moving a few cents one way or another. It's kind of a shame this is happening to BP and not some of the more deserving oil companies.

Re: Investment advice.
Well, that's the thing. It HAS to be gold. I tried investing in some companies, and I got told several times that I can't because I am a foreigner. So, basically I am asking if anyone knows where I can buy gold.

Seriously, I plan on trying this in some rivers in northern Michigan this summer. You live out west so you might have a better shot at finding some than I do.

Mutual funds. The right fund(s) should protect you against something that can fuck you in the future... that's the whole idea in using them as opposed to individual stocks or other commodities.

If you're new to investing, sure. However, I find that gold bars are usually worth more when they are shining their brightest.

Re: Investment advice.
It's best to diversify your investments and not have "all your eggs in just one basket" senario. If you were a true Yankee, then a Roth IRA is your best bet as it is tax-free upon withdrawl at a certain time, of course. Suppose if you were to work for a company that offers a generous 401K package, then you'll be taxed on it when you withdrawl from it. Of course, if you decide to retire earlier than anticipated, then you'll see less of a return on your intial 401K investment -- that is a given.
Imagine if you had 1,000 shares of eBay stock back in 1999...if you were smart to cash it out before the dot.com bubble burst, you walked away a rich person indeed.
It's been said if that if you play your cards right with a company's 401K, it's possible to retire as a millionaire or even as a multi-millionaire. I've had one co-worker whom lost over half of his 401K during the econmic downturn of 2008...shit happens, y'know. Some folks make the big mistake of cashing out their entire 401K and they have nothing to show for it...so then they face a future with absolutely no $$$ during their "golden years" when it is needed the most. The golden rule is to never cash out your 401K but rather to borrow from it and promptly pay it back as soon as possible if a dire emergency does come up.

As I mentioned before, gold is my only option. (Seriously. I am very surprised that I can't invest in the other options due to my status as described above.)
GaijinPunch, thanks for the suggestion. Incognoscente, you made me facepalm and LOL.

Re: Investment advice.
Are you sure it's your only option? What's your visa? I work with a fucking immigra... err... foreigner (haha) and she has an account at the same place I do. A mutual friend of ours became a financial planner for a year and then went to work for our competitor. :/Specineff wrote:As I mentioned before, gold is my only option. (Seriously. make sure you understand exactly what influences gold prices and factor that in. If the economy is turning the corner (or does some time in the future, which it will) then Gold will take a hit as people move out of commodities. It's all a game, and investing in commodities carries similar risks to those found in the equity side of the market .
Gaijin Punch has already given the best advice if you want something that helps mitigate risk.

You got it wrong. First you collect the medal, then you shoot a bunch of them and after that you can invest in gold.BulletMagnet wrote:In my experience, you usually need to have some green gems on hand as collateral.incognoscente wrote:However, I find that gold bars are usually worth more when they are shining their brightest.
Re: Investment advice.
Gaijin Punch and DCharlie, thanks for the advice. I spoke with a former coworker's investment advisor, and he said the person who told me to get into gold as my only option, either didn't know what they were talking about, or wanted to get me to buy foreign overpriced gold coins. (For over their actual raw gold value)
I'll keep on checking other options like the ones you mentioned.

It's a shame you weren't looking to buy gold about a year ago, our beloved dictator sold ours off at rock bottom prices.

Eh, that's just shorting, and depends more the luck of timing than skill. My experience has been that if I don't pick up the gold bars quick, either the other investor does, or else I get trapped by bundles of lawsuits and can't maneuver back to my original favorable position in regard to the collection of golds.incognoscente wrote:If you're new to investing, sure. and in these situations the Credit Crunch is surely when you can't get any more 100Y coins?
