Gigantic Saturn Shmups video
Gigantic Saturn Shmups video
A lot of people here probably already saw this on Insert Credit, but those who haven't, especially those interested in Saturn collecting, may want to take a look at this absolutely massive AVI:
http://www.archive.org/movies/details-d ... ng-special
The file is something like 650 mb. It took over an hour to download, and the movie itself clocks in at about an hour and ten minutes.
Someone, probably the owner of Segagaga Domain, sat down and played all of their Saturn shmups, and sprinkled in a bit of commentary. It's a pretty impressive selection of games, although the guy's definition of "shmups" is broader than most on this forum, including clips of the Panzer Dragoon games (even Saga), AfterBurner, Space Harrier, and a few other similar rail-shooter/flight sim games.
The most noteworthy omission is no videos of the Gradius Deluxe Pack. He also comments at the end that he couldn't get Metal Slug and In The Hunt to work. I was really disappointed to see that he didn't have clips from Guardian Force and Kyuukyoku Tiger II Plus, two of my favorite, most criminally under-appreciated Saturn games. The exposure would've been nice.
All in all, an impressively thorough look at Saturn shmups both big and small. It may be one of the few places online you'll be able to see videos of Blast Wind, Steam Hearts (none of the naughty bits though), Planet Joker, Terra Cresta 3D, Skull Fang, and the games packaged with Dezaemon 2.

Thanks a bunch man! I'm downloading the avi file now; can't wait!!
It's too bad someone hasn't done this with all their PS1 shmups-there are a lot of rare ones like Gaia Seed and Kyuiin that I'd love to see video of.

i watched this earlier today, you beat me to the topic alpha.
this should be required viewing for all curious about Saturn shooters, or at least posted in a sticky somewhere.
think of it...
"is blast wind any good?" --- watch the video.
"what are the good shooters for the saturn?" --- watch the video.
"OMG Planet JOker is TEH SU><OrZ!!11!!" --- we already saw the video.

I just watched the whole thing, and I loved it!! I was dissapointed that he didn't show Macross: Do You Remember Love-or is that pretty similar to Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, which he did show?
I would've also liked to see Wolf Fang, but oh well. Great video overall!

Shit, computer hardware in general is a damned rip off in Japan (not quite as bad as computer software though; seriously, who the hell wants to pay USD$90 for a new PC game?). I'm sure if he was willing to put it to good use, a few of us here could chip in on a Leadtek Winfast TV 2000 Deluxe for the guy.GaijinPunch wrote:Yakumo, the authhor of the video, lives in Japan, and not anywhere near Tokyo. Finding a cheap card that's half decent is actually a challange.

Hey, maybe I could make my own "live" video. I could show off some games...maybe even 1CC a few favorites all while slurpin' some Budeiser.
Tentative title could be "Hanging Out with the Twitch-Man...then again, who the hell would watch that shit!?
If so, maybe I'll have some time in a couple weeks..after I get some Vodkatron studio sessions outa the way.

The guy on the video isn't.landshark wrote:I love watching other people play video games (when they are good at em).

That's okay, I actually like watching not-so-professional runs on shmups I've never played before. Not sure why, maybe it makes me feel I can certainly do better than that guy.

The way he played definitely gave me the impression that he was a casual shmup fan, in so much as someone who owns nearly every Saturn shmup could be deemed casual At the very least, he was keeping things simple, probably for the sake of the less hardcore viewers.Ghegs wrote:The guy on the video isn't.landshark wrote:I love watching other people play video games (when they are good at em). From the games I know something about he playede only the first level and used bombs like they were going out of style. Could be he was just showing them off for viewers, though.

"Why isn't he using a different weapon here? Why did he leave that one enemy alive? How'd he do that?" and so on...
I appreciated it. Imagine if Rando had made the video; it would've taken a week.

AFAIK, they're the same game...I think listing "SDF Macross" and "DYRL?" as two separate games is an error in the Xenocide Files, as I've only seen one Macross shooter for the Saturn available anywhere.dave4shmups wrote:So what about Macross: Do You Remember Love; is it pretty similar to Superdimensional Fortress Macross that he showed video of?

Thanks BulletMagnet! I actually just found that out myself when searching for Macross and Saturn on Ebay. Looks like a great shmup from the video! Didn't notice a score anywhere in it though, and I am kind of a score monger.

Heh, just yesterday I received the copy of Gaia Seed I had won from eBay. Like you said, not the best shmup ever, but it would make a nice contender in the SNES/PCE Duo category. Not worth the price it's going for, really. Ridiculously easy too, the very first time I played the game I 1CCed it.Fighter17 wrote: Gaia Seed wasn't that great, I play it before. It's not one of the best shoot 'em up games ever made, but this game is very rare.
The graphical style reminds me very much of Phalanx occasionaly, especially during bosses. I need to check the credits, maybe some of the staff worked on both.

I checked out the rest of the Retrocore series, and it's a very well put-together program. Very informative, and at other times unusually entertaining, esp. in Vol. 5, which devotes a lot of time to pointing out how shitty some 32X games were.
And about this special...some of the 3D-Rail shooters looked very appealing. I'd like to try G-Vector at least, and Sky Target to a lesser extent. A Saturn game going for 5 bucks sealed is most likely a hint at something.
