I opened my copy yesterday and spent the day with it and my first thought is that I'm glad I didn't bother buying this when it first came out because it would have sat on my shelf until I finished with Futari. It looks great and is a lot of fun. I definitely need to invest in one of those PS2->360 controller converters because while I can play Futari on Original competently enough, the patterns in this are just too dense and the 360's pad is not cut out for that kind of precision. Played it for a few hours and still only have a vague sense of exactly how the scoring system works but I'll figure that out when the time comes to focus on the game and even then I'll have to pick a version to stick with.

I don't have an official source or anything, but it's probably just ESP as in extra-sensory perception, which the Japanese like to use on a much broader scale than the rest of the world - they seem to apply it to everything from psychics, telekinetics, and people with magic powers.

I think he's right about ESP. Also, I think Galuda may be an engrish version of garuda, so the title is..

I believe "ESPGaluda" translates roughly to "We Dare You to Pronounce This Correctly".

Is the pronunciation to this particularly contentious? I always pronounced it 'EE-ESS-PEE gal-UU-da' :?:

In the Cave promo vid where they had this girl playing they pronounced it as just one word . without the E.S.P. stuff.
So this is what I'm doing :!:

ESPRade's name is proounced "esp-raid" (as in "esper") at its title screen, so I've always gone with that for the series.

I did leave out some of the title's inherent nuance - a more literal translation is "We Dare You To Pronounce This Correctly, Round-Eyes." ;)

"shoot in boys" could give someone the impression you like to shoot semen into boys(pederast). Don't worry about it though, we know you don't want to shoot in boys. Culian on the other hand.... :P

Ditto. I ordered both on the same day, and sadly ESPgaluda II came in the mail first by a few weeks. By the time futari came in the mail I was absolutely spoiled by galuda 2 and just can't seem to play it as often.

I think I also appreciate that it's a much bigger package with all the different modes to tinker around with instead of only having like 3 or 4 modes and then a DLC pack.

As someone who pretty much just "jumped in" to Cave shooters randomly a few months ago (having only played older non-danmaku types) it was fairly eye-opening to play something that was more involving than just kill things=points or that risk-reward type setup. I didn't think I'd like it as much as I did because people kept telling me I should've started out on futari, but things didn't work out that way.

The only problem I find is that I enjoy this game so much, that every time I go back to play something I else I always feel really unsatisfied. As I've said before, I'm not a hardcore shmup fan, but I do like them quite a bit. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places?

Also, this is probably old, but I found this advertisement for the game on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scVhoSl6tZw

Is that the only one, or did they make more?

I enjoy how Japanese video game commercials tell you absolutely nothing about the game itself. Remember the Link to the Past dance video?

...what!?

not counting those retarded novice modes (which both have), and grouping too-similar modes:

Espgaluda 2:
Arcade
Black Label
Arrange
Omake

Futari:
1.5 Original
1.5 Maniac
1.5 & 1.01 Ultra (Seem to be similar to me but I don't have too much experience with them)
Arrange Original, Maniac, Ultra (listed these together because they play so similarly)
BL Original (DLC)
BL Maniac (DLC)
God (DLC)
1.01 Original (1st print)
1.01 Maniac (1st print)

Futari has just as many modes retail, more if you got the first print, and even more if you buy the DLC.

Galuda 2 BL to normal Galuda 2 is a much larger jump than Futari BL to Futari 1.5. It's the size of the differences, not the number of differences.

I'm not counting modes I can't get, or modes that I haven't bought yet. I thought that Original/Maniac/Ultra just changed the density of the bullets? When I said "oh this has more modes, you guys!" I meant more along the lines of it has more modes with different substantial changes to the scoring system, not just difficulty. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't that what the O/M/U is?

When I sit down with ESPgaluda II there's at least five completely different sorts of experiences I can get. When I open up Futari, there's only three. That is, if you want to count Arcade modes and no novice modes.

Mostly difficulty, but a few scoring differnces. The biggest change is original to maniac, original and ultra are almost identical. Still, it isn't as big of a change as switching between Galuda 2's modes.

Futari's 3 different modes are completely different. Entirely different bullet patterns and scoring systems. Sounds like you need to play Futari more  . Futari's Arrange mode is garbage, but so is Galuda 2's (bullet-cancelling near-invulnerability for 90% of the run and JUGS OF BOSS MILK). Galuda 2 really only has 3 decent modes: Arcade, BL, and Omake. Futari also has 3 decent modes (Original, Maniac, Ultra), but many more available via DLC and 1st print code, although the whole "1st print only" deal thing is bullshit, I must admit.

And to be honest, in my opinion any one of Futari's modes is better than all the Galuda 2 modes combined. Galuda 2 is not bad, but it's just nothing compared to Futari. Individual tastes may vary of course, but as far as number of modes, Futari has more to offer.

It certainly does. I get much more enjoyment out of any ESPGaluda 2 mode than all of the Futari ones combined.

Anyhow, is there any way to get Asagi to not suck giant ass in Arrange mode? Both of her shots are atrocious and take forever to switch between them. Is there some good strategy with her/him?

Play as Tateha. Asagi's kakusei shots are too narrow to be good over mode, and her normal mode shots are narrow unless there's a lot of enemies oncreen, at which point her lasers become slightly useful. If you're looking for an Asagi specific thing, the best you can do is constant lasers in normal, and then weave like crazy with shot in over. You also can't suicide anywhere near as often to get more gems, because you get fewer extends. She is pretty much impossible to get much out of in arrange mode. I believe the WR for Asagi arrange is lower than my current Tateha arrange score.

Yeah, she seems to be mostly useless in Arrange. I've already 1CC'd arrange with the other 2 characters, but I don't know if I should even hope to do so with Asagi.
