Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
Tried the Hori Ace Combat 5 flight stick w/ rudder+throttle attachment (uses USB interface) with the PS3 version of Afterburner Climax and it was no cigar. I'm sure a simple update driver is all that'd be needed to get it working properly with Sega's AC game.StarCreator wrote:I actually need to borrow an Ace Combat 6 flight stick (as I hear it is supported) to play this properly... I played this decently enough in the arcade and the controls just didn't transition to controller very well. The biggest thing for me is the Climax trigger - in the arcade, it was triggered by pushing the throttle to max, instead of it being a separate button. Having it on a button trigger is just really, really weird.
In the arcade, I would avoid barrel rolls by moving the stick around in a half circle, since snapping it to the opposite direction just causes the roll, which causes at least 3-4 bogeys to get away and ruins my ability to dodge.

Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
I can confirm that the Xbox 360 port uses the Ace Combat 6 stick just fine. From what I understand- this is due to the stick basically acting like a gamepad anyways. Game is great with a pad- a little bit more immersive with the stick. Honestly- this is a must purchase if you're a fan of fast paced shooting or Afterburner in general.
Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
I liked Score Attack until [s]I tried playing for score[/i] I started it and realized it offered infinite lives.
Nice to see that Sega has implicitly admitted that most of their gun shooting and pseudo-on-rails games are designed around creditfeeding.

Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
Considering that Sega's AM2 division had a hand in porting AC over to the 360 and PS3, looks quite stunning when presented in 720p running @ 60fps. My local arcades never got an AC cabinet in so I never had the proper opportunity to play/try it out.
Yep, with Sega's past history of crafting solid arcade game hits, they're designed with the "quarter-muncher" aspect in mind. I recall my local arcade having a deluxe sit-down Afterburner cabinet that charged a dollar per credit when it first made it's grand debut back in 1987. The entire cab would yaw and pitch in corellation to the on-screen graphics. Suzuki-san went all out with his arcade game creations and spared no expenses with the intial AB deluxe cabinet setup.
It's awesome to be able to play the classic Afterburner on the DC console with Yuki Suzuki's Gameworks Vol. 1 compliation disc. Runs at a crisp 60fps arcade spec framerate.

Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
The addition of a separate button for Climax mode is actually an improvement IMO. The AC6 stick is just perfect for this. Set your controls to Type D (it shows left stick for movement with RT< for throttle), then map Y/B/X to missiles, A to guns, and LB for Climax.
Sure you get infinite lives in score attack, but it's still best not to die (your combo count depends on that).
Neither the lack of a tilting seat nor the absence of link play bother me - playing in 42" widescreen makes up for these things.

Enjoying it much more now that I unlocked the larger cursor EX option. Kinda curious if it'll work with my old Saitek X52 on the PS3 but I'm not digging it out to test.

It's certainly better than having to pay thousands for an ABC cab.gameoverDude wrote:Neither the lack of a tilting seat nor the absence of link play bother me - playing in 42" widescreen makes up for these things.

About that combo thing, I still cant see the timer that makes it reset. Am i just blind ? May someone show it to me on this picture ?

Also, how does the combo chain affects scoring ?

I'd say somewhat like Crisis Zone on PS2, since there's no visible combo timer. I'm not sure exactly how, but larger combos do manipulate your score favorably. Is it just me, or does Climax slow the combo timer down a bit?guigui wrote:About that combo thing, I still cant see the timer that makes it reset. Am i just blind ? Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
If you plug the Saitek X52 into the PS3, you'll get the message of "Unknown USB device connected". A simple device driver update is all that'd be necessary to get it to work properly with Sega's ABC game. Even if you try using the Hori/Namco Flightstick 2 setup on the PS3, the same message appears as well (referring to "Unknown USB device connected"). It's instantly recognized on the PS2 console without any problems whatsoever when using Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War game though.mortified_penguin wrote:Enjoying it much more now that I unlocked the larger cursor EX option. I think it slows it down as much as it slows down the rest of the game. As said before though, enemies you shoot a missile at get added to your combo counter immidiately in climax mode when normally they get added when they blow up.gameoverDude wrote:I'd say somewhat like Crisis Zone on PS2, since there's no visible combo timer. Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
After Burner Climax is great. I do agree that it's too easy to perform Barrel Rolls when using a gamepad, which often lead me to doing them by accident and missing scoring opportunities/getting myself killed. To be fair, I did fewer Barrel Rolls after I had gotten used to the controls (and even less when I hooked up a USB Flight Stick), so it's not as much of an issue now.
Also, racking up combos does indeed give me Dodonpachi vibes when I try to properly bridge combos onto other groups of enemies to keep the combo meter going. Not that it's a bad thing.

My decade-old Microsoft SideWinder Precision Pro worked with ABC (except the throttle and lack of a start button to pause the game), if that tells you anything.mortified_penguin wrote:Enjoying it much more now that I unlocked the larger cursor EX option. Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
Based on Microsoft's approach to hardware I'm not likely to have much luck trying the same on the 360. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

It did? I'm pretty sure I have one of those sitting around somewhere... *search*Vincent Draconis wrote: My decade-old Microsoft SideWinder Precision Pro worked with ABC (except the throttle and lack of a start button to pause the game), if that tells you anything.

Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
Well, I could finish this one with two credits on defaults after just a few days of casual play.gs68 wrote:Nice to see that Sega has implicitly admitted that most of their gun shooting and pseudo-on-rails games are designed around creditfeeding.
The rank is very harsh, though, so I'm having trouble getting below that. Score Attack doesn't reset rank after the credit would normally end, making it feel too easy to get to the second special stage... I got there on my second Score Attack attempt, which didn't feel right.
What controller sensitivity is everyone using?
Bumping it up to High makes aiming and dodging much faster, making the game less balanced in your favor... at least, if you can get used to the twitchiness. I seem to find a better rhythm of locking on with Normal right now... this is the sort of thing I wish was just fixed, as it seems to me more of a game design issue than an option that should be up to the player.

Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
Bought it and I'm not impressed. I played the arcade version a bit before and I didn't like it a lot back then either, mostly because the swinging seat annoyed me to be honest. I'm usually a great fan of railer, but this just didn't appeal to me. Can't really explain it:/

I bought this game today, and holy shit it's incredible!
Kinda annoyed about the unlimited lives in score attack but besides that, the game is perfect. Highly recommended.

Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
Heh, I got a chance to play the arcade version two weeks ago in paris, had a lot of trouble aiming and stuff because of the vibration + swinging seat.
They could have removed the barrel roll as its pretty much completely useless. Learning to not do it is fairly easy but it probably turns off a lot of players when they're trying the game out.
Playing for score is a lot of fun with all the bonuses, extra stages and rank.
Yeah, definitely one of the better XBLA titles. Weird that it has lower than 3 star rating on marketplace, I thought such a game would be pretty popular as the graphics and music are good and its a very polished port.Ruldra wrote:I bought this game today, and holy shit it's incredible!

Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
WTH I just saw this on Google Play for Android. Has anyone here had a chance to try it?
I need to know before I drop $3.
edit: then again, I'm thinking the controls will probably suck, unless it supports gamepad.

Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
Looks like the mobile port, along with other Sega mobile ports has been removed from iOS App Store/Google Play probably due to the same reason why the console version has been removed (aka license for real world aircrafts has been expired)
Re: After Burner Climax!!!!!....
Sega pruned a ton of their older/less profitable mobile games from the App Store recently. If it stuck around for this long, it was more likely a victim of this blanket cleansing.Gespenst wrote:Looks like the mobile port, along with other Sega mobile ports has been removed from iOS App Store/Google Play probably due to the same reason why the console version has been removed (aka license for real world aircrafts has been expired)
