Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Currently I'm playing through Metal Gear Solid 4 for the first time (I'm through the end of the second chapter now.) Playing through it makes you realize just how overrated the Uncharted games really are. MGS4 has a lot of similar mechanics, but is so much more enjoyable to actually play, where Uncharted feels like you're playing through the same repetitive shootout over and over and over to get to the next cutscene. The story is a tad on the depressing side though...
Also playing through the first episode of the new Sam and Max season on the iPad version, but I'd recommend skipping it in favor of the PC version. Way too buggy on the iPad to recommend at this point (but the game itself is entertaining.)

I don't, no. Been so busy with other games I have yet to give it the proper attention.jonny5 wrote:you got any all clear times yet?Ghegs wrote:Hey, nice. I just got the game recently myself. Replaying Silent Hill 2 after like 9 nine years. Have a better sound setup so now I can really hear the cancerous beasts and baby screams!
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Now I got the relatively easy Neo Drift Out 1CC, Overtop is my bitch.

Got Wipeout HD on sale, so so amazing. Zone makes my head melt from the awesome. Reminds me a bit of Rez. RIP Studio Liverpool.
Trudging through the post-game in Final Fantasy XIII.

Playing through Dead Rising again. Was trying to get 50 people out of the mall from a level 1 start, but I fucked up halfway through and didn't feel like restarting. I'm still going to be getting almost half of the achievements in one run, so I'm fairly happy with it.

Not that you give a damn, but: Apocalypse (starring Bruce Willis) and Silent Bomber. Where are such fast-paced jolly demolishers this gen? What the hell happened to shooty games on consoles? Especially Apocalypse appears fairly humbling when you look around and see all these slow-paced pop-up shooters on consoles. Is this the best developers can do with console joypads for controllers?

Silent Bomber is such a badass gem of a game. Rented it so many times as a kid, would have been cheaper in the long run to just save up and buy it.

Sorry guys - I missed this exchange.
Here's my Neo Drift Out 1'CC:
7' 32" 27
Loads of room for improvement!
I also just yesterday got the Over Top 1CC. Easier than Neo Drift Out, and more potential for improvement thanks to all the short cuts, but just not quite as fun or cool.
4' 11" 99
I might have to give Neo Drift Out some more hassle inspired by Jonny5's performance.
What car are you using Mr. 5?
EDIT: I've also got a Thrash Rally boot (Shhhhh...) so I'm going to find out if that's really so bad compared to the other MVS top-down racers.

If you ignore the fact that it's encased in sandbox prison, Red Faction Guerrilla has the closest to Silent Bomber action I've seen.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Not that you give a damn, but: Apocalypse (starring Bruce Willis) and Silent Bomber. Where are such fast-paced jolly demolishers this gen?

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Hm... Opinions on Red Faction: Guerrilla seem divided (not that I really need any this gen game, like, right now), but I'll keep that suggestion in mind.
I cannot recommend Apocalypse enough. It humbles Treasure games in terms of omni-blow-upness and gun-porn-sillyness in my book (especially later stages). In my current state of mind it's easy to overhype it, but - for example - whilst playing Z.O.E.2 (fairly impressive game in many respects), where you also blow tons of shit out of... shit with flying colours, I was nitpicking a lot (framerate drops and camera issues left me with impression of a game either overambitious or not properly polished). Apocalypse is by no means without such issues, but I just can't be angry with a game this silly and entertaining. Dunno how it plays without analogue sticks (might be not quite as hot), but with a DualShock 2 it's a potent blast.

Red Faction Guerilla is one of those games that has some fun parts (the GeoMod stuff) but you have to slog through a really mediocre shooter to get to them. It's also rather buggy on the PC version I got (video corruption and crashing mostly.) When it does work it works quite well though.

Sounds like Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction then. Solid game underneath, but too much work type work to do. Mercenaries wasn't quite what I want from an arcade(y) blaster (console FPS-like controls and framerate aren't my idea of making good use of the hardware), but it was delightfully silly on its own rights. When it wasn't plain mediocre, that is.

Almost finished playing God of War 2 for the gazillion time, but this time in Titan difficulty. Will replay God Hand in Hard next. Actually, I started a long time ago and just couldn't take it anymore. So hard.

I didn't play the first Mercenaries at all, but did play the second one. It was fun for a while, but shallow as heck.Obiwanshinobi wrote:Sounds like Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction then. Final Fight: Double Impact. Is it even possible to 1cc Magic Sword?
Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
Beat that years ago. Getting past the gay brothers is really tough, since you have so little health, but once you beat that part the rest of the game is easy. The only enemy that gave me trouble later on was the samurai boss, but you're good as long as you stay close and don't let him copy himself.UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:Will replay God Hand in Hard next. I always thought people overhyped the difficulty. It's not THAT hard.

Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I've yet to finish God Hand, but never really had a problem with the twins on Normal. You can defeat them super cheap: ram into one, uppercut the other one, stomp onto one of them, repeat (or something like that). Engaging one while another one is standing won't do you much good. Elvis was more of a trouble for me. Generally in God Hand I tend to run around a lot. Haven't even mastered fancier techniques. As far as I can tell, it's not THAT hard indeed; just very unlike Tekken or Soul Calibur. Closer to Onimusha 1&2 (tank controls) and Blood Will Tell (dashing) at heart.
The original has got some decent missions... a couple of hours in. Early ones are quite uninspiring. The freeroaming thing is a wasted opportunity. I'd rather have missions selectable for the menu, because GTA it is not (GTA had fun cars and motorbikes, and better framerate, at least on my PC).Vexorg wrote:I didn't play the first Mercenaries at all, but did play the second one. Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
I'm playing through Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow again now that I've gotten a DSi XL. It's been 4 years since I last played the game, and I still really, really like it. It's not as good as Symphony of the Night, but damn fun.
Other than that... all I've been playing is the "should I buy a Japanese 360 for Ketsui and maybe a couple others" game, which isn't a whole lot of fun. I think I might lose.

I can see how anything past the gay brothers would be easy now. I had to replay the first couple levels so many times, I accumulated $60,000 gold for upgrades. Though, I feel like I'm cheating.Ruldra wrote:Beat that years ago. Re: What [not shmup] game are you playing now?
First I picked up DJ Hero and enjoyed it for five minutes until I realised that the turntable part was broken and kept dropping my scratches.
Took it back and picked up a bunch of cheap games that have interested me for a while:
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Dead Space
Project Sylpheed
Lost
Ninja Blade
Ninja Gaiden 2
I think I've almost finished Lost and it's quite poor but fun-ish at the same time. Lots of problems but a chuckle for a fan of the series. I can't believe how terrible the voice acting is!
I have previously owned Ninja Gaiden 2 but traded it in in frustration at my lack of progress. After spending some time on Infinite Climax mode of Bayonetta I decided to give it another shot.
Also got about 55 hours into Disgaea PSP and coming to the end of the story. I'm just starting to collect specialists for the xp boost and attack boost.

If you don't want to bother with the hassle of collecting Statisticians on Disgaea PSP, there are glitched items (Foresight, Tainted Staff) which come with pre-subdued maxed out versions of those (as well as Armsmasters, Managers and Brokers, but the latter two aren't really worth bothering with in the post-game since mana and HL are easy enough to come by as is.) Admittedly it's kind of a cheap way to do it, but if you're already going to be spending 200+ hours playing the game it gives you a chance to focus specialist hunting on stuff that would be more useful.
I've got a couple of games (Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time and Borderlands) which have seen recent price drops that I need to pick up at some point. Unfortunately work has been busy as heck the last couple of weeks and hasn't allowed much gaming, although I did spend a few hours on Friday setting stuff on fire as a pyro in Team Fortress 2.

Cheers Vexorg I'll keep an eye out for those. Finished the story last night and enjoyed it immensely but I'm just doing a quick and dirty NG+ run to check out the ''Good" ending I missed out on due to my habit of killing my weaker characters with AoEs...
I'm really torn about whether I should transmigrate a bunch of my created characters in ''Genius" and top tiers of their class. Any advice?
