I'll look into the comic, but considering everything Simon Pegg and Nick Frost has done since the end of Shaun of the Dead has been a pile of turds compared to Spaced, I'll reserve the right to remain dubious about any films they make from now!DJ Incompetent wrote:You fucking owe yourself to read this. Right by Tottenham Court Road tube station, on the cross roads where Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street cross. It's through a doorway opposite a Sainsbury's, in a basement under one of those 'cheap haircut' places. Address here:DC906270 wrote:msg for spadgy - where is the comic shop that you mentioned? as i am living in London at mo, and i currently go to Mega City for my comics..

Friendly, cheap, great deals on standing orders and staffed by some funny fuckers who have become great mates of mine. Amazing selection of back issues as well. Regular signings too...

It's still copyrighted material, so no. Great series, though.Stormwatch wrote:Can I post a link to downloads of Warren Ellis' Transmetropolitan? The series isn't published anymore...

I just started reading the Batman Detective comics which were written by Paul Dini (writer for the animated series).
Very good stuff. Highly recommended.
Also, I'm sure its been mentioned, but "The Longest Halloween" Batman mini-series was phenomenal. Batman Begins was very loosely based on it.

RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!!!!
Amazing isn't it?! I was lucky enough to read The Long Halloween and Year One right before the film - the two's proximity to the film really increased my plesure of the celluloid version...jp wrote:I just started reading the Batman Detective comics which were written by Paul Dini (writer for the animated series).

A quick list of things people should be aware of:
Invincible
This is basically the Superman story, but told in a way that is much more reasonable and less boring than Alien Jesus. There are small attempts of "realism" in the book - when Omni-Man punches someone weaker than himself full force, the arm goes through the body instead of magically making them fly through the air as an example. Very close to the ideal of what upbeat Superhero comics should be.
Walking Dead
Zombies. People who want to not die and find a nice safe place to live. Soap Opera drama gets in the way of this dream when jerks want their shelter/stuff/women/flesh/etc.
Fables
Uses public domain fairytale characters. Some stuff happens. Had a good run. A very good book to slap women in the face with to teach them they love comics.
Irredeemable
Written by that guy who wrote Kingdom Come, so it's obviously a bit annoying and preachy at times. Has some nice parts - is worth it if you have an evening you want to kill.

PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.

Gone with the Blastwave.
I don't think so. Have you read The World of Edena?Nuke wrote:Aye, although one would argue that his contribution to film outshines his comic book work.PaCrappa wrote:Nice JoshF Moebius rules!

It's been a while since I posted here, but I've been enjoying the spoils of my local charity shop recently:
• Give me Liberty (c1995) by Frank Miller (Something like Watchmen meets DMZ meets 2000 AD)
• Troubled Souls (c1995) Garth Ennis' first ever work. Slightly amateurish at the start, but a brilliant read and a great insight into the evolution of his writing style. You literally see him find his writing style in one graphic novel.
• Crap loads of old Commando and War Picture Library comics
• I finally got into Hellboy too, and even read Ghost World too. Ghost World's topic wasn't my cup of tea at all, but the writing is just fantastic.

Re: Comics.... that don't suck
Read comics for about 10 years. Got into mini-comics and underground stuff in my teens.
My rule of thumb:
・Almost anything on Drawn & Quarterly is great.
That includes:
・Acme Novelty Library by Chris Ware
→The most recent issue was one of the most melancholy and depressing stories I've ever read
・La Perdida by Jessica Alba
・Berlin and Jar of Fools by Jason Lutes
・Anything by Chester Brown ("I never liked you" is awesome)
・Optic Nerve was interesting when I was a kid, not sure how I'd react to it now.
・Other than Drawn and Quarterly, I too am a Fantagraphics fan. Don't have my collection here to know what I liked but...
・Heavy Liquid by Paul Pope was pretty good.
・Always loved Ariel Bordeaux's Deep Girl.
・Bone also very good.
・Liked/hated the Walking Dead. Found the scenario interesting but the obnoxious habit of the characters to be yelling at each other *all the time* was too much for me.

He's also got a new one out where he illustrated all of the Book of Genesis.

This has been tempting me out of the window of my local bookstore for a while now. Just not sure if I can justify spending that much on randy biblical adventures, but it looks awesome.JoshF wrote: He's also got a new one out where he illustrated all of the Book of Genesis.
Re: Comics.... that don't suck
I mostly look at his stuff so I can copy his crosshatching technique, which is intricate without looking mechanical. If the subject matter just happens to be something like his Kafka book or Genesis and not a picture of him humping a thigh, that's a bonus for me.

I heard is Genesis book was pretty porny.
You're right though, his crosshatching is beautiful in just the way you describe. I particularly like it in the sketches he did for that blues CD.
