It's about damn time that George Lucas released a Blu-Ray set of his Star Wars films...October/November 2011 release date will be here before we know it. Checked out a cool 720p version of Star Wars: A New Hope...it was one of those European HD released formats though. Looks great when played back on a PS3 with HDMI setup. Unfortunately, it is the re-released Special Edition version that came out on the big screen back in 1997. SW purists wish for Mr. Lucas to release his original & unaltered original SW film trilogy out on DVD & Blu-Ray formats instead but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

I heard some stupid rumour that if Lucas releases the original version he has to give his ex wife royalties as she was married to him at the time of its release.

Now don't get me wrong, I want the original versions as part of the set as well. But honestly, i'd rather see that no woman milks a man of his hard earned work, especially since she left him rich in the first place.

That rumor does make sense as she is listed in the ending credits as editor (Marcia Lucas) after all. Recieving the proper royalities is a very big deal when it comes to such hot IPs such as the SW franchise. Not to mention that some folks retain a lawyer if it needed be (if circumstances get ugly).

Interesting that 20th Century Fox passed up score big time on the SW toys & merchandising as they intially thought that it was going to bomb big time upon it's release back in May of 1977. It wasn't until a bit later that Kenner finally released them with much bally hooed fanfare. I recall picking up a cool SW brochure promoting the upcoming SW toys when I saw SW on the big screen back in 1977. Mr. Lucas was smart enough to have total control and reserved rights to the SW toys & merchandising IPs.

I'm a huge star wars fan but I'll only bother with this (maybe) if it's the theatrical versions, not the stupid re-releases with greedo shooting first and all the other bullshit. I'm still not all that convinced that Blu-Ray is worth the money when I have DVDs already, so I might just pass altogether.

I have the DVDs of the original theatrical versions. I think they're awesome, mainly because they are the theatrical versions. The quality and whatever seemed just fine to me, but then I'm not a stickler for video or audio quality so I doubt I'd notice anyway.

When Mr. Lucas did finally release the original SW trilogy on DVD, you'll notice that when the three Jedi are reunited at last in a key scene shown in Return of The Jedi, Yoda, Obi Wan Kenobi & Anakin Skywalker, you will see that it's the younger Anakin (and not the old Anakin as originally shown in the original ROTJ film back in May of 1983).

Would've been interesting to see Mr. Lucas do SW Episodes 7, 8 & 9 with the futher adventures of the Skywalker clan, the rise of the Jedi, the formation of the New Republic & new situations/new enemies. So if Episode 7 was done, it would've been released in 1986, Episode 8 in 1989 and finally Episode 9 in 1992. So roughly a new SW film every three years.

I was one of the lucky ones to have watched ROTJ on opening day back in 1983, especially when it was shown on the big screen in Mr. Lucas' hometown of Modesto, California. That was cool. It was even possible to buy a full-color ROTJ film program with cool insider info on the day of the film's premire.

At the local Video Concepts high-end A/V retailer inside the Modesto, CA based Vintage Faire mall, whenever TESB was playing on a huge RCA projection beam-type TV setup, a huge crowd would form and be mesmerized by it. This was back in the days before ROTJ finally made it's debut.

When Atari Games finally debuted it's Star Wars Quadrascan color vectorized arcade upright & deluxe sit-down cabinet in 1983, it was neat to see other fellow arcade gamers line up their quarters on the leading edge of the SW marquee to properly wait their turn. This was known as the fine art of "Jamming"...a practice that you don't see much these days at a modern-day American arcade anymore. The grizzled early-1980s arcade gamer veterans will know what I'm referring to when you "jam" your quarter to be the next in line to play.

Prompt sequels wouldn't have worked as well, because then they'd never get to bring in the awesomeness that is Thrawn (whose trilogy was written in the early '90s). I don't think I'm the only one who would more or less demand any 7-8-9 trilogy at least MOSTLY follow Zahn's work.

But of course his Jedi are portrayed somewhat realistically, and we can't have that.

has anyone seen starwars on dvd9 via up converting? its looks darn good much better then the dvd5 releases. Specially considering its 2x the size. A blue ray should be sweet with a decent sound system.

What release are you talking about? There was an initial DVD set with just the newer versions and later individual DVD releases that have both the newer and older versions of Star Wars. The later DVD set contains the later releases with the theatrical versions. However, the discs with the older versions use a lower quality print than the newer versions, supposedly from an older laserdisc master.

It's right at the end of Jedi in the last shot (the ghost line up) and Hayden Christiansen is standing there instead of the original Darth actor looking like the smug, silly prick that he is.

Same here. Granted, I don't give two shits about most movies, but Star Wars is an exceptional case. As a nerd, I should blow my load over it, but I just never saw the appeal. Maybe I was too old when I first saw it (12? 14? I don't remember).

It doesn't create quality topics, necessarily, but otherwise I didn't see the reasoning. It seems pretty reasonable to ask for there not to be forum clutter with a new topic for every Blu-Ray release of note (or whatever somebody wants to talk about).

Finally, I wish PC-E Fan X! would show up to mention that the opposite-direction prop design does work; it's been in use since at least when that topic was out in a Russian military helo design.
