Shmup => Anime

Post by heavymetalme »

I'm wondering if there are any other anime series like Salamander that were based on a shmup?

I was thinking earlier today how spectacular it'd be if a game like Ikaruga would be made into a OVA or something- of course it'd be hit or miss, but wouldn't that be wonderful?

Maybe I'm off my rocker- I don't know.

*edited for silly spelling mistake.

TwinBee. Also, Opa-Opa from Fantasy Zone was in the Zillion anime, and Vic Viper was in Sky Girls.

If this counts, doujin group MAIKAZE had the balls to attempt a Touhou anime. Supposedly ZUN requested for it to not continue ("guys this is just going too far") after a single episode. I heard it has decent seiyuus but I'm afraid to watch it.

I remember watching that touhou vid when it came out a couple of years ago. Back then i wasnt into shmups and didnt know what touhou was, I remember watching the vid which was very nicely done for a fan project (plot was abit crappy). And not knowing wtf Touhou was i looked it up. Unfortunatly what i found was just sicko fans and stopped my investigations there. If ild of scratched abit deeper and found out about the shmups themselves i might of got into this genre sooner then i did.

Unfortunatly any sane person will run a mile as soon as they encounter touhou fandom. Which does a disservice to the touhou games and shmups in general.

Back to the topic Im supprised someone hasnt made a Gynoug or Artisneit tenticle sex H anime, I know cullian would prolly dig it :)

Ikaruga anime = the brownest anime ever

If you like the games, you may enjoy it. As TrevHead said, the animation is good but the plot is fucking stupid (like the dumbass scenarios ZUN concocts for the actual games). I'll be perfectly honest, I was a complete sadlife at the time and got mad hype for character appearances and shit. But yeah, kind of forgot about it and had no idea it was cancelled.

But it would be a deep, epic war drama with lots of character development and ingenious genre-breaking...animation style!! How could you not love Ikaruga?!...the anime?!

Ho-hum.
Actually quite a few excellent-to-good anime have pretty toned down colour palette: Kino no Tabi, Last Exile, Wolf's Rain...

I think the second episode of the Touhou anime was released at Reitaisai. I also see it being sold at the usual stores now, although I don't have much interest in watching it so I can't really give any more detail.

There is some kind of Xevious everything.

I'd kill for a Dragon Spirit/Saber anime. Also I wouldn't mind Rayforce or Hyper Duel animes.

There is, but the anime (Area 88) was made before the game. The same goes for Spriggan, Macross Scrambled Valkyrie and probably many more...

Actually, the Spriggan 2D shooters don't have anything to do with the manga or movie of the same name. The naming is just a coincidence. The anime movie came out long after the games anyway. There is, however, a Playstation adventure game adapted from the manga.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

It's a CG film. I don't know if it's anime or not.

Also, Strike Witches has a semi-cameo...when the Warlock mech is in fighter mode and opens up to shoot its laser it looks like Vic Viper.

Then there's the Gradius and Xevious references in Pani Poni Dash during the bus episode.

There's plenty of Touhou Hentai out there. Lots of regular cosplay porn, too.

So that finally explains the medieval fantasy thing in the game  The manga started in 1989 and the first Spriggan game was released in 1991, so I always assumed the game is based on it, especially since they both had some mecha elements. Seeing the movie later on left me puzzled, since there was no trace of medieval knights or such.. thanks for clearing this up finally :)

It's not much, but there is a cool (official) anime music video based on Space Invaders: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDuXr23ApME
