Post by Diavle »

Sup,

Can you guys please tell me the best shmups available for Mame? Not asking for links or anything just names and maybe a lil opinion would be great.

- Thanks

I really enjoyed ProGear Arashi. It never came out for any console so you could only play it if you were lucky enough to get your hands on the actual Board. I enjoyed the feel of the game...was like flying in a Miyazaki film.

Guwange, ESP Ra.de, and Dangun Feveron are some nice arcade-only Cave shmups. You might also like Armed Police Batrider, Battle Bakraid, and Space Bomber, none of those ever made it home.

Batsugun Special Edition, and ignore the messy graphics and sound emulation.

I've enjoyed some Dangun Feveron, Donpachi, and DoDonPachi on MAME, along with the first two Gradius titles, and the two Salamander titles.

Argh I think it may soon be time to play DonPachi and DoDonpachi again, or some Progear, a friend introduced me to the DoDonpachi series (named Galaxius here on this board) and I've actually taken a liking to them, those were my first two Cave games played.

Raiden's a great game, also Raiden Fighters Jet rocks. Another good top down game would be Shienryu, although unfortunately MAME can't emulate it too well. Its worth playing anyway, the scaling effects just look so good

Raiden Fighters 1, Raiden Fighters 2, and Raiden Fighters Jet have been emulated in mame for about 6 months now.

Quoted for emphasis. I would also add:

Vasara 2
Nostradamus
Final Star Force
Sonic Wings 2 or 3

Hey look, this guy posted a message about emulation! Why haven't you flamed him to death and brought out the rehashed Iceland jokes? Or reported him to local law enforcement?

I love DoDonpachi on mame. Also, R-Type Leo is only available in the arcades/mame, and it's good fun. Not your typical R-Type game, but really fun anyway.

Also, Pulstar and Last Resort are really good, but I find both of them almost impossible

Giga Wing is my favorite, I like playing it more on Mame than on DC.
Great game and great score system, not everyone likes it but you should give it a try or some more tries. ;)

I also can recommed you:

-Sexy Parodius
-DoDonpachi
-Gradius / Nemesis
-R-Type 1&2
-Pulstar
-Galaga'88

I personally don't like Last Resort that much, I have played it for highscores and found out that the game is too short. After you learned how to behave in the levels it's not that exciting anymore, well that's at least my opinion.

A good classic game that propably nobody knows is "Star Force". It's really old, but I think it's quite fun. ;)

Daioh is semi-arcade only since there are some home versions of it in a couple Dezaemon games, but they probably don't count since they are a bit different from the arcade one.

Keep in mind as you try all these to remember to learn the games' scoring systems as well, so you don't become one of those sillies who compares DDP to Dangun.

Check out Mode7's Guwange ST for example, or one for Progear, most shmups are deeper than they seem

Anyways, Neon-approved Mame-only shmups:

19XX
Dimahoo
Dangun Feveron
Guwange
Progear

edit: Batrider too

Battle Bakraid
Battle Garegga
Blazing Star

and some older faves:

1942
Fire Shark
Flying Shark
Tac/Scan

There's nothing like the feeling you get when someone points you in the direction of a long forgotten game from when you were a kid, one look at the screens on klov.com and I recognised it :) Never ceases to amaze me that I'm still finding great games that I grew up on, long may it continue!

It's that Dark Saibot guy. I don't know when this guy got banned, but it is likely because of the fact he could not shut up when people disagree with him. He bluntly justifies game piracy because he feels paying high prices for video games is a rip-off, and would rather download them for free. He had to get the last word in all the time.

Guwange is okay, personally it doesn't mix with me though. The graphics are really nice, the whole "omg ^_^!! so kawaii~~ <3" fangirlism that this game brought on wasn't so great.

And the second level seemed to be a natural pain in the ass. People enjoy having their score in english, too. If this game didn't attract a japanese-only enviroment and wapanese-american lovers, it'd probably be more appreciated.

Well, DoDonPachi works PERFECTLY in Mame. The PS1 version is the only other one of this game that I've played that is so perfect.

Better idea, play Batsugun on Final Burn. Still lacks sound (as the sound rom was never dumped proper) but graphics work perfectly.

I heartily agree with a lot of the other posts here as well.

If you're interested in going oldschool, here's some good oldschool shooters to try (And a few newer ones too)

Omega Fighter (THIS is from the eighties? Pretty damn good for an eighties shmup)

1941 Counter Attack (I never did like 1942 or 43 much, but 1941 was cool)

Vulgus (Capcom's first game! Simple yet addictive)

Super Space Invaders '91 (Arguably the best Space Invaders ever released in the arcades)

194X The War Against Destiny (Good old fashioned Vert Shmupping)

1944 The Loop Master (Done more in the vein of the classic 1940s games, but uses a full screen setup instead of a vertical one, still vertical scrolling though. EXCELLENT graphics, although a tad long for my tastes)

You may want to come out from under your rock, they have been for months now. ;)

Unfortunately, emulation is far from perfect on them. While they are playable, some layer issues still exist (Tanks can be seen 'above' the buildings they come out of, sound is EXTREMELY buggy).

To be honest though, the only RF I really liked a whole lot was RFJ, but I still think all three are worth looking at, as well as Viper Phase 1 (Which is, more or less, Raiden in space)

Un Squadron
Carrier Airwing
Forgotten Worlds

Try Xevious if you haven't already. Dangerous Seed is fun for a while.

P-47 the Phantom Fighters is good for a horizontal. Don't miss Scramble.

Air Gallet is a great vert.
SHOOT IT QUICKLY !
