How unfair and frustrating can you be as a shmup boss?
Just found this great flash game called "Boss Rush" that lets you control a boss (they have several to pick from) and use combinations of bullet patterns to take out the enemy spacecraft! Now you can BE the super-unfair boss that traps you into a corner with no escape! You can control the insta-kill laser and use it in combination with a bullet pattern to create a trap that only memorization can avoid! Enjoy!

ugh, could they have chosen a more obnoxious control scheme?
Not worth my time...

Surprised at the negativity, I had a lot of fun with it. Although the levels requiring you to ram the enemy fighters were frustrating.

I like it, but I hate the interface. Kind of makes you think.
I did great so much water and milk that I threw up when I was little.

Re: How unfair and frustrating can you be as a shmup boss?
This game is a great little idea. Sure the interface is screwy and the controls lumbering and slow, but it feels like that's the point.
When we're facing down a boss the huge fortress feels menacing and overwhelming, but they are slow manovering in many cases, and they do have ridiculously elaborate weapons cababilities relative to a typical shmup player-operated attack fighter.
Being at the helm of a boss (standing, I imagine, like Darth Vader at the bridge of any of his massive vessels) controlling and orchestrating an attack against some agile little spaceship would probably be a really infuriating process. I think this little Flash game does a great job of putting you in the shoes (or super-shiny leather boots) of the commander of a flying fortress.
It isn't that much fun, but it's a great little shmup related toy nonetheless.
It's probably best played in an over-the-top, macho-camp black and gold military uniform with a cape and and exotic space pet on your shoulder.

Well, the game is fun but gets old quickly. Once you find what kills the enemies the fastest you just keep repeating that over and over again.
1st ship: Shot 3, then use shot 2 to lead them into the bullet spray.
2nd ship: Fire 4 drones then use shot 4. Or use shot 3 to kill them Discharge-style.
3rd ship (my favorite): Spin around and use shot 2.
4th ship sucks so I stopped there.

Truth: fighter spacecraft pilot plays space invaders, boss plays command & conquer.

Nice idea but i gave up as soon as I had to ram an enemy (dumb ships kept running into the laser I was using to try and herd it). Would be interesting to see if you could have a person controlling the ship as well, though since memorisation is so important in these things i'd imagine the ship player would get trounced pretty quick.

Re: How unfair and frustrating can you be as a shmup boss?
Yea i think something like that would really work well. Have one player control the fighter and another the boss ship. But have both of the ships play and control differently. The boss would be controlled with the mouse / keyboard with the player concentrating on trying to hit the fighter with different attack patterns. And the fighter would play just like any normal joystick shmup and be all about dodging the bosses attacks while returning fire.monkeyman wrote:Nice idea but i gave up as soon as I had to ram an enemy (dumb ships kept running into the laser I was using to try and herd it). The great thing is that non shmuppers would have fun playing the boss and us guys would actually get to play a 2 player shmup without badgering friends who arnt into shmups. If a developer made this into something other that a flash game and added extra shmup mechanics to the core design it would be great!
