Puchi Carat + Rotary Controller == Teh Awesome!!

Post by undamned »

So, this last weekend I was going through my box of random controllers in the livingroom and came across my Famicom colored Namco spinner for PS1. The game that came to mind immediately was ye ol' Puchi Carat! I ended up playing for quite some time :D Using a spinner makes this game so much more fun to play. It seemed so difficult using a pad on it in the past.

While I was at it, I tried using the controller on Taito Legends [whichever JP ver. has Puchi Carat on it] but to my dismay it did not support the spinner.

If you are unfamiliar w/ these spinners, here are some pics which fellow shmupers have posted in the past:

Yeah, I bought one of those white and red colored Namco produced rotary controllers. It set me back 2,800 yen mnay moons ago.

Has anyone used a real arcade spinner setup to play Jeff Minter's Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar? I recall that the "Yak" used a hacked Atari 2600 driving controller to get it work with T2K on the Jag. There is the Japanese Seimitsu arcade spinner that is silky smooth when spun. Has a very nice weighted flywheel type of feel for those really long spins if spun fast 'n' hard.

It sure is fun to spin a Atari Tempest arcade upright's spinner...it really does spin for a long time if spun really hard. I used to do this whenever I got the chance to play an upright Tempest cab back in the day.

Trying to play a serious session of Atari Games' Off the Wall Jamma PCB with a pair of digital joysticks (compared to playing it with real arcade spinners) just doesn't cut it since there are times when the ball really goes insanely too fast for your paddle to catch up and deflect it back up on the playing field. Is regarded as another one of those cool PCBs that supports up to three pals playing together.

Atari 5200 Factoid:

You might recall that Atari Corp. did make an Atari 5200 paddle controller but it was never released to the general public and remains a cool prototype spinner controller nevertheless. Sure would've been cool to use with the unreleased Atari 5200 version of Tempest or even with the 5200 version of Super Breakout. Why Atari didn't make/sell a self-centering joystick for it's 5200 console is nuts...even though the 5200 controller is an analog to digital one.

Heh, did the US ever get that paddle controller? I know we never got a stand-alone Puchi Carat release...

I'm pretty sure we did not. The Namco paddle came w/ one of the JP Namco collections and the blue one came w/ non-US Puchi Carat, so I think we got left out :(

Somebody mentioned in another thread that Block Kids supports it. I'll have to give that one a spin, har har (I'm pretty sure I already have a copy of that game on my shelf and possibly unopened!).

Nice!

I never got one of those Namco controllers myself. I did use a NegCon controller for Wipeout games back in the day (and get pissed at my roommate who abused it).

Is this similar in size to the NES Arkanoid controller? I found those spinners to be a little too small to grip effectively, but still much better than using a thumbpad to play.

Quite possible! I'm assuming the x-axis control is just pulsed left/right, just like the paddle. I know the SFC mouse works wonders on Arkanoid... time to wire up a Famicom->SFC cable for my Arkanoid spinner! :D

You can use the NegCon, PSX mouse or even the Nyko produced PSX trackball controller (debuted in November of 1998 stateside with MSRP of $49.99 USD) with the PSX game of Tempest X3.

I sold the F3 cart pretty quickly. Great game, but it wasn't much fun to control with the joystick and I didn't feel like hacking my CP with a spinner.

That controller sounds neat. I was disappointed that the PC Taito Legends 2 collection doesn't support mouse for Puchi Carat. It doesn't even have a speed up (or speed down, haven't played for awhile) button like the PS2 Taito Legends 2 version. I'm guessing the EU Xbox one is the same way.

Just found out that the Namco spinner was also released as a stand alone accessory (i.e. not just with Namco Museum Vol. 2), part number SLPH-00015.

And for those of you who have the JP Namco Museum Vol 2. disc, I also just found out about a hidden game which uses the spinner!

Yeah, I bought one of those sold seperately Namco rotary spinner controllers with the SLPH-00015 designation. It works fine with the PSX game compliation of "The Atari Collection 1" of Super Breakout (although some controller swapping is needed to gain access to certain menu functions and re-swapping the spinner controller so you can better control your paddle during an actual gaming session).

Alas, the Namco game of Cutie Q was removed from the USA version of PSX Namco Museum Vol. 2...so no Namco spinner controller support there.

It might be interesting to purchase a "hobby box" and try to make one. They can't be all that complex inside. 8)

No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Yep, that's right. It was featured as the arcade contest game in the movie "Joysticks" circa 1983.
