LED tv's ?
I just went to best buy and wal-mart to check out some tv's...seriously the only places around me. I was looking at the new led tv's. I even grabbed one of them and tate'd it right there...the viewing angles seem to be perfect on it.
I was wondering if it would be affected by using it for extended periods of time in tate mode. after finding out some lcd's can overheat, I just want to be sure before I even look into them more.
one I was most interested in was a 26" vizio...I know not the highest quality but I think it would suffice for what I want to do with it. and it was only $348.00 here's an official link on the website http://www.vizio.com/m260va.html only thing that sucks as far as I can tell so far is no s-video for a ps2

Re: LED tv's ?
Heat wise best bet would be to contact vizio, plus you can always seek out whether tate would invalidate warranty. Either way I'd be very surprised if it didn't tate perfectly fine and be covered by warranty.
No idea how well it performs input lag wise?
s-video? ... No great loss imho anyway; just get component ps2 cables - confident it will look better than s-video ever did.

Re: LED tv's ?
I think it would be the same lag-wise as an lcd. its 720p.
I've been searching for a full day now and can't seem to find anything about using it as a gaming tv. probably too new...even on the website, it says coming soon lol

Re: LED tv's ?
Well, it really is still an LCD. The "LED" stuff is just the light source (which does confer advantages, just not in anything to do with the fundamental display tech).

Re: LED tv's ?
It has component so you could just run your PS2 through that if you have to. You're almost certainly going to get some significant lag no matter what, considering it has to upscale.astro city ninja wrote: one I was most interested in was a 26" vizio...I know not the highest quality but I think it would suffice for what I want to do with it. and it was only $348.00 here's an official link on the website http://www.vizio.com/m260va.html only thing that sucks as far as I can tell so far is no s-video for a ps2
Course the thing also has one of those bootleg native resolutions, 1366 x 768
TATEing isn't going to do anything to your LCD. If the LCD overheats, it's because it's a shitty LCD and not how you have it rotated.
Simple answer: Playing a PS2 on an LCD is a bad idea to begin with if performance is an issue at all.

Re: LED tv's ?
well it wouldn't be only for the ps2..it would be mostly only for a 360. but I do still play quite a few ps2 games that's all. so the resolution sucks on it? I'm just trying to find a good 26 inch tv or monitor for under 400.00 with a resolution no higher than 720p.

Re: LED tv's ?
Well I guess to get technical, all HDTVs are gonna do scaling even at their native res, due to overscan bullshit and all that. What really matters is if it looks good, and if there's any scaler or input lag.
You can judge the first for yourself easily, but lag testing you'll either have to test it yourself or wait for someone else to.

I know. The tech-fascist in me kinda wants to punch people in the mouth for such misinformation, but I can't help but blame marketing and Best Buy employees.Ex-Cyber wrote:Well, it really is still an LCD. It was only about a year ago that Sony showed off an actual LED screen. This 11" screen still goes for about $2500. Don't tell me you just bought a 43" LED TV for $1200 @ Best Buy.

OLED and LED are 2 different things...... OLED is the way to go if they ever get larger in size and come down in price. LED... I haven't seen anything that puts it at the head of the pack.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

An OLED is an LED, in much the same way that a MOSFET is a transistor.Strider77 wrote:OLED and LED are 2 different things
Re: LED tv's ?
OLED material is an organic light emitting diode, the only thing which separates it from traditional LED is the organic or solid state nature of the material. When you are talking about your television this terminology is used a bit differently however.
An LED screen uses an LCD screen which is lit from LEDs placed behind it. Traditional LCD screens have a backlight that is along the edge which flushes light throughout the back of the screen, leaving image issues in its wake. With LEDs lighting pixels behind the screen, lighting of the LCD can be more controlled, however this tends to bring other imaging issues with scenes of high contrast, lit objects appear to have halos around them in darker areas.
OLED screens on the other hand are self-luminating and are not lit from behind. The screen itself is the luminous material. OLED screens can be thinner than LCD, use less energy and have higher contrast ratios, alternatively the organic material destroys itself with use over time, one of the reasons the tech has been so expensive and slow to improve.

Real OLED displays are gorgeous for sure. That alone made me want to play with an HD Zune.

Re: LED tv's ?
I recommend you steer clear of the Vizio brand of tv's. They're cheaper in price campared to a lot of other brands, most likely due to the cheaper components used.
My mom just bought a 32" Vizio recently, and the remote as well as the channel buttons on the side of the tv stopped working within days of purchase. It really didn't surprise me upon researching where Vizio is based that their Tv's are shit. The company is based in Taiwan, which is also the HQ's of Acer, which also sells cheap shitty laptops that notoriously fail....badly. Hell, Best Buy (in the U.S.) doesn't carry Vizio. You'll only find them in Walmart and Costco primarily. Sorry for the rant....just stick to Samsung, Sony, Sharp....etc.

Re: LED tv's ?
One thing to keep an eye out for is that even if you're shopping for a major brand, Wal-Mart often gets "special" models that are not sold anywhere else (well, maybe Sam's Club). Given Wal-Mart's well-known obsession with minimizing costs, I wouldn't count on them being built to the same standard.

yeah I noticed that too...I'm going to purchase at best buy for sure. only thing that sucks is it seems like the selection is so limited there.

Re: LED tv's ?
The larger Vizio XVT models (47", 55") are really good. Can't say anything about their other TVs though. Only about 1F of lag and super nice picture quality.
Re: LED tv's ?
Just to say that I recently bought a Sony LED TV, reference KDL 40EX700.
Plugged my japanese Sega Saturn in it simple through RGB cable and the result IS amazing. No bad colors, upscalers do their work really well, preset game mode eliminates all lag (in my opinion anyway).

Re: LED tv's ?
I was just saying they are not the same.... no where in picture quality. Like it was mentioned the OLED use organic phosphorus and use no backlighting. The results are gorgeous black levels and color. As high a quality as CRT, and none of the geometry or convergence issues of a CRT. All the pros of a CRT AND flat panel and none of the negatives other than one native resolution.OLED and LED are 2 different things

Thankyou.

The no back lighting versus having a backlight is a big difference between the 2.

Re: LED tv's ?
I don't think you're tracking. First, stop listening to marketing. I'm talking about the technology itself, not what Best Buy tells you. An LCD TV is an LCD TV because the pixels are all tiny segments of a huge LCD array, not unlike the segments in the LCD screen in your digital watch. What's behind the LCD screen does not change the fact that it's an LCD screen. What TV marketing is doing is telling you is that an LCD TV magically becomes an LED TV because it's now backlit by LEDs. The pixels are still LCD in nature and therefore it is still an LCD screen, NOT an LED screen. LED TV's will not truly exist until the actual pixels are tiny LED segments, as has been done with that TV I linked to. I tire of people calling current TV's LED TV's when they should simply be called "LED Backlit LCD's." Don't buy the marketing hype.Strider77 wrote:I was just saying they are not the same.... no where in picture quality. Like it was mentioned the OLED use organic phosphorus and use no backlighting.
