It might just be PS1 electronics with a PS1->USB adapter built in. Such adapters often report the directions as buttons in order to support dance pads (which are expected to support hitting up+down and left+right).

Well, it identifies itself as a PS3 controller.

(And my computer identifies itself as an iMac, even though it's a Hackintosh. )

Do you have PS3-compatible drivers installed? I don't have a Mac (hacked or no) so I can't say if Macs are different, but I can't just plug in a PS3 controller into a PC and have it work without drivers to complete the negotiation to activate the controller (apparently), even though it'll recognize it's plugged in.

I've only tested Sixaxis/Dualshock 3 controllers, not owning any other PS3 peripheral that identifies itself as a PS3 controller specifically. Most cheap controller PCBs I've seen are just standard HID since the PS3 will accept those.
