27-Year Old Asteroids World Record Beaten!
27-Year Old Asteroids World Record Beaten!
I was watching the live stream last night, it was pretty exciting! Especially when he took a bathroom break and came back to find only two lives left! Must have taken some serious endurance to play for close to four days!
The new record-holder is John McAllister, congratulations to him!

Re: 27-Year Old Asteroids World Record Beaten!
I was also watching the live stream of this. I didn't see the end though. I know if that was me I would have been freaking out if I saw I only had two lives left. John was a beast though. Very cool to watch.
Re: 27-Year Old Asteroids World Record Beaten!
I was watching the last 500k of the run. After his bathroom break it looked like he may not break the record. He was down to 2 men in reserve but somehow remained calm and built his reserves back up. It was quite impressive.

One of these days an insanely lengthy WR effort will bring a whole new meaning to the term "kusoplay."

So are they not allowed to setup a toilet in front of the machine? That would bring a whole new definition to "live stream".kengou wrote:I was watching the live stream last night, it was pretty exciting! Especially when he took a bathroom break and came back to find only two lives left!
Typos caused by cat on keyboard.
Re: 27-Year Old Asteroids World Record Beaten!
Four days on one game, this dude was clearly in the zone.

Re: 27-Year Old Asteroids World Record Beaten!
Forget toilet breaks, I'm amazed he managed to perform one task non-stop for that many sleep-deprived hours without suffering a psychotic break.

Re: 27-Year Old Asteroids World Record Beaten!
I remember reading an article of the auzzie galaga WR holder, cos the game went on for such a long time he had to do the same thing for tiolet breaks. Im thinking of the dirty assed stuff that someone whose game they were playing didnt give them a large stock of lives. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iLkISmX ... re=related
i feel sorry for poor sods who have to sit and watch these long ass vids to find out if everything is legit
edit: does anyone have a link for any saved part of this run on vid? (prefrably edited or at the end)

Re: 27-Year Old Asteroids World Record Beaten!
I was there for the last few hours of it!! If you looked at the room cam and saw some guy in a black cap sitting next to the Donkey Kong cab most of the time, that was me haha.
John McAllister is a friggin machine. Even though he stopped the game shortly after passing the record, he was still awake for at least a couple hours afterward before I left. It's very probable that his score is officially a bit several hundred thousand higher than the record too. Asteroids is a pain the ass to track scores on since it rolls over after 99,990... he had a pedal that he stepped on hooked up to a laptop running a program that would automatically add 100k every time it was pressed. They think there were definitely times it wasn't pressed, so there are several (they think around 5) rollovers that are unaccounted for. I asked if it was possible the button was double-pressed at any point which would lead to a higher score, but they think it only happened once. Either way we won't know the actual score until a Twin Galaxies referee watches and verifies all 58 hours of his score (how would you like to be in charge of watching that, heh)
Also it's worth mentioning that John recently shattered the 5-lives record on Robotron 2084 with a score of 1,236,950, making him the first player to crack a million on 5 lives. You can watch his run on youtube:

Damn, this guy tears up Robotron. It's really motivating to watch that run you linked since Robotron is a really enjoyable game but nuts hard. Thanks for the heads up BBH. Otherwise, 58 hours straight for the world record is pretty impressive and bewildering at the same time.BBH wrote:I was there for the last few hours of it!! Re: 27-Year Old Asteroids World Record Beaten!
For anyone to play anygame for nonstop for longer then a day is a machine. I im not too keen on playing shmups that have more the 6 or 7 stages ffs
Re: 27-Year Old Asteroids World Record Beaten!
And here I thought after reading about the first insane record for this game, that was intense. That's some brutal dedication for having a world record.

Anyway, as others said, staying awake and concentrated more than 3 days with no pauses is incredible and must require quite some will

Is this the longest videogames world record ?

Really? You might be joking but I could totally see that happening.

Has the highscore been verified as a world record yet?

Thats the first time ive checked that site out, had a look at the DDP score listings with a robert flynn as number 1 with 15mil, so i would guess that shmuppers dont really care for TGs so called seal of approval?
BTW wheres the place to go to find shmup WRs?

Yeah, there was some threads over at the NG boards about how their NG scores are also horrible. It probably also has something to do with the high scores of a lot of games are from Japanese players, a demographic I'm pretty sure Twin Galaxies doesn't spend as much time looking into. Besides, you'd be in a pretty small company of people who were top shmup players. The top DDP players are probably limited to a small handful. And you'd have to expect they'd all care about TG enough to submit their scores to them.TrevHead (TVR) wrote:Thats the first time ive checked that site out, had a look at the DDP score listings with a robert flynn as number 1 with 15mil, so i would guess that shmuppers dont really care for TGs so called seal of approval?

Amazing stuff though. That's a WR like almost no others.
