PS3--upgrading to FW ver. 3.21 loses Install Other OS option
Got the message that another PS3 update was avaible. D/l'ed it and it said something about if you have another OS on the older PS3 consoles, you'll lose this ability to use it if you decide to go ahead with the latest update. Not to mention if you decide not to go ahead with FW ver. 3.20, you'll lose the abiltiy to chat, check msgs, not be able to go on/log on to the PSN site, etc. Lastly, it mentioned something about not being able to run the latest PS3 software that runs on firmware ver. 3.21 and beyond.
So that means you won't be able to use Linux Mame emulation either on the PS3 anymore if you do decide to update to the latest FW version. Still am wondering if I should upgrade to latest FW version & lose the option of have other OS to work with the PS3. What would you do with your PS3 (assuming it's an older PS3 console)? I've got a 1st gen USA region 60GB PS3 console with FW ver. 3.15 as of right now.

I'm just not happy with threats of losing abilities to access the PSN, playing latest games and watching BD without the update, and also the way they keep on disabling functions that they had been promoting. Gaming wise I'm fine with the update since my non BC PS3 is used just to play PS3 games, not even bother with BD.

Dont upgrade if you want homebrew.
That's why they're removing it, they're afraid of USB ISO Loaders.

I also would suggest here not to go for an up-gradation. The above mentioned reason of USB ISO loader is correct here.
Defeat is not bitter unless you swallow it.

ISOs of PS3 games? I don't think so.

The official statement is "security concers", from what i've read.
Which is basically what i was saying ;D
Because George Hotz (of Jailbreak fame) was able to use Linux to directly talk to the hypervisor, which basically means full fledged access to any aspect of the PS3 hardware.

What games?Elixir wrote:ISOs of PS3 games? I don't think so.

I'd be more interested in region free playback of PS2/PS1 games personally.

Class action. I want the whole $500 back.
PS3 linux was my only Blu-ray data drive.

They are only speeding up the process, now they will just find a way to do it without Linux, probably using custom firmware.Jockel wrote:Because George Hotz (of Jailbreak fame) was able to use Linux to directly talk to the hypervisor, which basically means full fledged access to any aspect of the PS3 hardware.

Who knows, once the PS3 gets homebrew-raped like the PSP it actually gets worth owning.

I believe he directly said so in his blog.Udderdude wrote:They are only speeding up the process, now they will just find a way to do it without Linux, probably using custom firmware.Jockel wrote:Because George Hotz (of Jailbreak fame) was able to use Linux to directly talk to the hypervisor, which basically means full fledged access to any aspect of the PS3 hardware.
Given how heavily encrypted PS3 BD games are, Sony has nothing to worry about. Maybe for the movies, but the aim is not piracy. I hope they can haxx0r it the way they did with the original Xbox.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.
