halley wars fun

Post by sjewkestheloon »

anyone else got this fantastic game gear shmup? i never thought it possible to actually get a good vert on a handheld (apart from the pc engine gt but i haven't got one yet....) but i was wrong. ok so it's a little easy and in only a couple of play throughs i can get to what i assume is the last stage on one credit, but it'll be a great pick up and play travel game for a long time methinks.

can anyone confirm any smaller details i may have missed about the game at all? for example are there any hidden features? is there any real reason for the destruction meter? it seems impossible to suck enough to get it to 100% unless i'm nowhere near the end of the game and it ranks up the difficulty a fairt bit anytime soon. are there any rewards for getting low dr?

trust me if you see it about get it. i think i might make the leap into the review section of this site with this game sometime soon as it's about time i gave a little back to this fantastic site.

It's an easy game, and pretty decent, but it has a MAJOR flaw.

Hold up-right. Then let go of up to just hold right. Notice that you're still moving up and to the right. Diagonals are screwed up in this game (I can only assume it's a glitch that, SOMEHOW, nobody noticed).

Let's just hope that none of those playtesters ever get hired by a company like Cave

That's a pretty large flaw to miss - does it happen the same with all diagonals? If so it makes a bit of sense from a programming perspective, since they probably only stop the ship movement when you press an opposite direction (ex: left when all ready travelling right) or when the d-pad is centered. I know because I've done this before, luckily I caught the error fairly quickly

Yes, it happens with all diagonals, but it's weird. If you're holding, again, up and right, and let go of up, you'll continue moving diagonally. But if you let go of right, you'll just move up.

Despite this, I can still one life this game. It's really, really easy. :P

This behaviour actually makes sense, in that the up and down directions are not "turned off" when they aren't being held, however the right and left directions are "turned off" when they aren't being held. Does that make sense? In my head that explanation makes good sense, but it might sound confusing.

In other words, up and down directions are somewhat broken. It's funny to me that a professional product would have a problem such as this one :)

Easy game, never noticed the gameplay flaw though.
Great game! I started a topic about the game once or twice before.
The gameplay flaw, I'm really curious.

Can be completed after a couple of goes. But I completed it on the easiest setting, so if you want a challenge, play on anything but the easiest settings.
