I noticed yesterday that this is now available at P-A:

Any takers? There's a L.E. version as well for the true choaniki fan.

Tried the game in the past two days. I find it insulting that the miku-lookalike girl's so pathetic (there's no upside to using her. Her shots are weak, and her options' shots are also weak and doesn't fire rapidly to make up for it. There's virtually no pros for using her other than if you like torturing yourself), and how screwed up the characters are.

The guy character with the second partner are so strong, that it's pretty much pointless to choose any other combination.

It's still fun though. I like how you're supposed to "inject protein" by tapping the O button and listen to Samson moan until you get a ROSY EXPLOSION scene to continue a game.

I still have to understand why importing Japanese software is OK in the US but not in EU.

That sounds pretty much in keeping with the series' theme of choosing men over women.

Because Sony Europe are the ones who kick up a stink about it. See also: Nintendo Europe.

Apparently by signing up for the Hong Kong PSN you can download Zero Cho Aniki for half the cost of importing a physical copy.

Kotaku are wrong. The Hong Kong PSN Store no longer allows you to register foreign credit or debit cards. I tried the other day - no joy. I checked around afterwards and found a lot of other people saying the same thing.

And even if you could (again, you can't), then you'd need a PSP that hasn't already been used to download official software onto, as downloading via PSN onto a PSP effectively region locks the console for all future downloads.

Holy shit, Aksys Games is wonderful. Completely fucking crazy, but wonderful.

Just got this press release:
AKSYS GAMES BRINGS FORTH CHO ANIKI ZERO!

Behold! Drink Your Protein Shake And Witness The Birth Of The Manliest Shooter EVER!

Torrance, CA (October 13th, 2009) – Aksys Games, a publisher of interactive entertainment products, proudly brings you this announcement, in exaltation of all that is manly: in spring 2010, Cho Aniki Zero will be oiled up and ready to thrust its way onto your PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system! Sold exclusively as a digital download through the PlayStation®Store, Cho Aniki Zero gives players the chance to take part in an epic struggle alongside heroes Idaten and Benten as they blast through the muscle-bounded forces of Emperor Balzac II.

Cho Aniki Zero brings manliness back to the old-school shoot-em-up genre and, warps it to another dimension of sights and sounds. In Cho Aniki Zero, players will be introduced to brand-new characters and newly heightened experiences of rhythmic action, intertwined with the famous BGM of Kouji Hayama. Battle through five man-rageous levels of brotherly love and muscle-on-muscle madness!

The Story So Far…

Since the death of Balzac, the Builder Planet has celebrated a long period of peace.

However, as time goes by, protein becomes scarce, and protein deficiency is soon a serious problem for the Builder Planet. As people struggle for control over what protein is left, Balzac II begins his subtle rise to power...

Learning of his return, Idaten and Benten take up arms and begin their man-tastic voyage...

“Cho Aniki Zero is a real trip,” said Frank “Bo” deWindt II, Associate Producer, Aksys Games. “It’s wacky, hilarious, and just plain fun. Be it the crazy characters, the challenging gameplay, or even the out-of-this-world enemies, you’ll find yourself chugging down protein shakes between levels before you know it!”

Key Features:

• MUSCLE REIGNS SUPREME
Choose between Idaten and Benten, then select your “Option” (sidekick) such as Samson, Adon, or Micha & El. Defeat Emperor Balzac before he claims the universe’s protein for himself!

• MEN’S BEEEEEEEAM!
Too much man-action on the screen? Collect enough Man Protein to unleash the devastating attack of the Men’s Beam!

• IT’S RAINING MEN!
Blaze through five man-mazing levels of love, and bear witness to the birth and rebirth of some of the greatest bromances of all time!

• CHOOSE WISELY…
Cho Aniki Zero offers multiple paths that leads to various endings for our muscle-bound heroes!
Buying this day one for sure.
I most definitely hate your favorite shooter.
For the sake of our own sanity, let's not even talk about Psikyo, Battle Garegga, or DDP DOJ with each other.

GTA and Mass Effect will be swiftly forgotten once the evangelicals get wind of this one.

It will be glorious.

The evangelicals don't know Persona or SMT exist(which has a dungeon modeled after a MEN'S SAUNA).

This won't even make a blip on their radar.

That said, as if Aksys weren't awesome enough for bringing Shiki 3. Keep on, you crazy diamonds.

This sort of thing is pretty much guaranteed to be a PSN-only release in the States, right?

Game is out(of the closet?) today on the North American PSN.

Logo is shaped suspiciously like a penis.

Has anyone played this game? I'm really curious to know a bit more about it before I buy it.

It's no Darius Burst, but it's not crap either. From what I've played it's challenging, a bit on the long side, and filled with small fast moving bullets. And there's a scoring system that may potentially be interesting.

Those graphics are ... not good. And they're half the fun of Cho Aniki. Looks like I might pass.

I absolutely love that - I had it as my work desktop wallpaper for a while.

I've missed that this actually got released already, but now I'm up to speed I've got to hunt me down a physical copy.

I just cleared the game and thought I might open a high score board for it since scoring system is kind of interesting.
That was until I realized I actually counter-stopped the game on my first 1CC. Scoring system IS broken.

Lol, seriously? Care to elaborate on where the flaw lies or is it just too high amounts of points which eventually lead to a quick counterstop?

There is some multiplier bonus at the end of levels. Those multiplier are based on how many bullets you absorb with your super muscled brother. Just absorb a lot and you're done.

I downloaded this last night in a fit of desperation to have a new portable shmup to play at lunchtime. So far, it's a fairly playable little shmup, though I'm not sure it's worth the $20 they're asking for it.

Gameplay is too focused around blocking bullets with your "dude," which just makes the whole thing feel like a clumsy R-Type without the polish. Difficulty seems unbalanced, with poor pacing that lets you float along with nothing to do for long stretches before dumping a screen full of tiny pellets on top of you without warning. Enemies love to come up through the bottom and top of the screen, which makes for some silly cheap deaths. Extra lives are plentiful, but this seems to just be a mask for the uneven experience. Even the overt homoeroticism seems fairly tame outside of the continue screen.

Visually it's clean and runs smoothly on the PSP. They did a fairly good job at polishing the controls, as even on the clicky PSP-Go's d-pad it feels responsive. Were this a $10 download I'd give it thumbs up, but as-is it's a bit overpriced given the level of quality.
