Buying Jap XBOX - Where to get and what games....

Post by brianon »

Guys,

I've just been made redundant :( so have some money :)

This is a one shot deal only. Unlikely I'll have loads of spare money later to spend on many Jap games/hardware so ... what should I get ? And where is the best place to get a Jap 360 ?

Was thinking of the following...

Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5
Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5 Arcade Stick
Xbox 360 Arcade Console (New Xbox Experience)
Death Smiles
220V <-> 100V/110V Stepdown Stepup Converter (500W)
Mamoru-kun wa Norowarete Shimatta [Limited Edition]
Raiden Fighters Aces
Ketsui: Kizuna Jigoku Tachi Extra

All Jap versions*
*Question on Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5 + Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5 Arcade Stick. The game is region free. Is the stick also ? I presume it is :)

Any bad choices ? Any obvious omissions ?

Cheers,
Brian.

Ketsui isn't out yet. Lots of drama about that title's release.

Is Raiden Fighters Aces available for your local 360 region? It may be cheaper than importing.

Titles you're skipping include DaiOuJou, Shikigami III, Otomedius, Raiden IV, and Shooting Love 200X. I wasn't very impressed with Otomedius. Shikigami III and Shooting Love are hit-or-miss, may want to try first. I liked DaiOuJou and Raiden IV, although if you have PS2 DaiOuJou it's skippable.

I believe Ikaruga and Triggerheart are still available on the Live marketplace. If those interest you, may want to grab some marketplace points. Also keep in mind if you want the Deathsmiles Black Label DLC, that one requires Japanese points to purchase, unlike Futari.

Importing a joystick from Japan is usually more expensive than buying a locally available one, even if you want to swap out parts. But if you want the Futari artwork I can see getting it.

This thread might help answer some of your questions.

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=23501

Since you're in Ireland, you might be better off buying all that stuff from videogameimports.com
If you get an Asian region 360 instead of a Japanese one, or use the power supply from a PAL 360 with the JP 360, you won't need to use a step down converter. An Asian 360 can play all the same games that a JP 360 can.

Deathsmiles and Raiden Fighters Aces are good choices. I haven't played the other games yet, so no comment on those. You can find opinions on the games in the threads dedicated to them.

I've never heard of region blocked sticks. If it has usb which i assume all these sticks for xbox use...then it will be compatible with any console and any game (assuming all games support sticks).

Yes, don't miss DOJ-BL EX, it's great fun, even though the menus are a bit tiresome.

If you snag Deathsmiles(which is still my favorite shmup on the 360), make sure to get some J points, so you can download Mega Black Label.

You should also get Futari.
Ikaruga is on XBLA also.

Castle Shikigami III isn't bad at all. I prefer it to the 2nd one.

Those are the only ones I would recommend at this point, since i'm not a Raiden fan. But a lot of people really like Raiden Fighters Aces.
If you want a Japanese IV, just shoot me a PM since i'm selling mine. :)

Don't forget, Galuda II comes out in Feb., so preorder that sucker.

Lucky dog, getting severance pay.

The only really "bad choice" on that list is Ketsui. Don't bother putting money down on it. No one knows when it's going to be released...or perhaps if it's still going to be released. Buy Raiden IV instead; you'll get months of mileage out of it before we even hear another word about Ketsui.

If you simply must hurry up and wait for another Cave game, preorder ESPGaluda II like Ash said.

(Personally, I'd swap the Mamoru-kun LE for Shiki III, but that's just me.)

Definitely get Futari. I'd keep mamoru. Shikigami was pretty cool but bored me. To each their own (: at the very lease pick up shiki on ebay used or elsewhere. That's what I did.

Thanks for all your comments guys.

In the end I decided NOT to get a JAP 360 :(
Just can't justify the expense right now. NO job, kids to feed, etc... :)

But I did buy ...
Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5
Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5 Arcade Stick

So hopefully that'll keep me going for a while.

Thanks again guys.

Cheers,
Brian.

Yeah I just read this thread and was thinking what an awful idea it would be too spend a severance package on all these video games. I think you made the right decision. I would have added though, that if you already have a PS2 stick, there are good adapters for $25 bucks. That's what I've been using.

When you get another job though, that will be a good reason to celebrate by picking up a j360 so that you can play Deathsmiles. It's even better than Mushi! :)

Hi Guys. Well. I took the plunge and bought a jap 360 and some games (Not arrived yet) from play-asia. I have a EU 360 (the jasper kind). Can I use that power supply on the jap 360 or do I need to get a 220v-110 convertor ?

If I do need a convertor ? could anyone recommend one ? I know play-asia have one but its a bit dear !?

Cheers.

EDIT: The convertor itself is 30€ but the cheapest shipping is €50 ! :(

EIDT 2 :) - WOuld this work ? http://cgi.ebay.ie/Local-Power-220V-to- ... 2305da9226

EDIT 3 - on a roll now. Remembered I had bought a step down convertor for a jap Saturn a few years back but never used it. Grabbed it there from the attic. 220v to 117v/100v. I guess thats no good ? Would need to be 110v and not 117/100v :(
Actually. I found it on play-asia where I had bought ot years ago. http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-fl- ... -1rl8.html. Even mentions it does not work with 360.

I think you'll need more watts for a 360. I had something similar, but it burnt up when using my 360 with it. Check the manual of your EU unit to find out how much power it draws.

You can use a 3 pin UK/Eire style power supply on you Japanese console. Isn't that cool? (I thought it was). So no need for converters! I thought I needed one too, but the fab Lee at videogameimports.com set me straight.

I only hope you don't get a massive customs charge when your package comes in :( Are you in Northern or Southern Ireland?

So you are saying I can just swap the power supply around from my 360 here with the Jap one as i need ?

As long as your JP and EU consoles are the same model type (I would hope a JP 360 purchased now would be a Jasper), you should be fine using your EU power brick for both. I can't say this for sure though since I don't own a EU console... to be absolutely sure, you can read the spec sticker and make sure they output the same wattage, etc.

If your JP 360 is an older model, this might not work, as 360 power bricks thus far are forwards but not backwards compatible, due to newer 360s requiring less power to operate and the power bricks being adjusted to match. If the power brick is incompatible, it won't physically fit into the slot.

Hey, quick question and not sure if i should ask it here, but there are some questions above that are kinda related-

Kinda thinking of getting a japanese xbox360, and one question i had was regarding my gamertag (on my american xbox360). Can i use that same gamertag on both systems and have my game history/points all in one ID?
Thanks

You sure can, although I personally use a memory card so I don't have to constantly transfer my accounts from the US console to the Jap. Any import game you play with your US account should show up in your list, although it will be more than likely in Japanese.

Now as for points, if you meant MS points, then those are region locked and you can't use US points on the Jap marketplace, and vice versa. If you meant gamerscore then yeah it will show up like I said earlier.

Just wondering if i got a good deal from ebay. After a year of waiting on a solution for RROD and watching regularly on ebay, I finally bought an arcade JPN Jasper XBOX 360 complete in box with a 60GB HDD for $330 shipped as a Christmas present to myself. It's funny, I bought it to play Death Smiles and Raiden Fighter Aces, and now both can be played on a US XBOX 360. Of course, there is no worry for future games if it is region free or not, so there's that benefit. =P

well, if you "regret" gettin that unit, you can always sell it (hint hint, wink wink), i wouldnt wanna wait for the games to come to america or something... some of them just WONT come... and MS wont open the lock on the console... that will never happen... so, again, if you want, you can sell it (to me) ;)
