cave sh3/new astro city power supply issues

Post by brokenhalo »

i remember reading a while back that the stock new astro city power supply has issues with the cave sh3 pcb (not enough amperage on the 5 volt line iirc). well i bought a mushihimesama pcb and my NAC doesn't seem to like it. i get some noise on the monitor, my 5-volt switches randomly from 0.xx to 5.07 and everything in between and there is a light on the pcb that flashes randomly and a light in the psu that flashes randomly.

so my guess is that i need a new psu. is there any particular model i should look for that would be a direct drop in replacement in my NAC? a quick glance shows three connectors into the psu, and if i could get away without having to doing any rewiring that would be awesome. i can get a better pic of my current psu if anyone wants to see it, but it's basically this guy

any other advice on a workaround would be appreciated. i was kinda thinking about just getting a 5-volt power supply and hacking it in seperately if getting a new power supply proves to be too much of a PITA. any idea how many mA an sh3 board requires?

and in case anyone is wondering, the power supply is known working. my esprade runs fine with a 5.07 reading on the 5-volt line. progear ran fine as well when i had it.

thanks for the links ramza. it was exactly what i was looking for.

just out of curiousity, the recommended replacement psu is that massive nvs-4000 (first one pictured here. it puts out plenty of power, but doesn't seem to have a -5v line, just 3.3v, +12v, and +5v. what sort of problems might i run into without a -5v line?
