My Cars Coming Along Nicely...

Post by TWITCHDOCTOR »

I've been doing some more work to it recently. I traded my freshly rebuilt Holley 600 carb for a 750CFM(bigger). Well, it runs so much better now.
In fact, its almost as if its a different car!!!
Don't laugh...but when I turn it on in the garage, it actually vibrates the whole friggin house!!! Even picture frames rattle!

I need to fix the rear brakes though, as the rear wheel cylinders are leaking.

I also just adjusted the throttle cable, to achieve WOT, or Wide Open Throttle, before I was only getting about 50 to 75 percent power(it would still launch), now, it'll open up big time.
I'm not going to test it yet, until I fix those brakes, because its power is almost intimidating.

Yea, I've "powered up" the Chevelle! :)
BTW: She's putting out around 330HP...at least.
Got to go for a dyno run one day to really know for sure.

All this is great, but now I have NO money for my gaming hobby. I haven't bought a game in 3 months...
Then again, who needs Forza Motorsport when you've got the real thing!!!

Hope you are thinking of adding a Force Orb or a Manipulator Arm or some Options to it. Or maybe a Polarity Shield. Imagine your car changing colors at the flick of a switch. :P 8)
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

That last option kinda exists. It's called peralescent paint. It changes colors depending upon how light hits the car.

Twitch, your car sounds badass. Too bad I drive a junk heap of a Volvo. Safest cars in the world my ass. I don't feel safe at all in this rattling deathtrap. I'm getting rid of it soon, though.

Isn't it great? When I start my car in the morning in the garage, it just roars and I know the neighbors can hear/feel it (I'm in a town house).

My neighbor tells me she can hear me coming home from when I turn into the subdivision, and I usually keep the RPMs under 2500 in the subdivision.

Can't wait to hear your dyno numbers, that should be interesting. Do you have old values to compare against?

My car does this under a street light at night. It's not supposed to though. It goes from dark blue to a very very deep purple color. It looks relaly cool at night.

No previous Dyno's to compare it to, but at the "CompCams" website, they ran a few dynos with small block 350's with the same parts I'm using in my 327(262Cam), anyway, the 350's were producing 345 to 350 HP. So, with that in mind, the 327's have a smaller crank, which is why I figured/guesstimated slightly less.
More less, halfway between 300HP and 350HP...so at least 325HP or so.

Car won't start now...

Just bought brand new wires from Accel.
Everythings hooked up correctly, but the carb isn't getting fuel.
Fuel pump is working/fuel filter is clean. (more than half a tank o gas)

Man, I swear its one thing after another...
I even drove it around last night, and it was working fine.

I just had a few moments to complain about it(taking a break from cussing at it). Maybe something bypassed the fuel filter and clogged a line going to, or in the carb. Anyway's more work ahead later.

That's the problem with old cars...you fix one thing and something else breaks. At times you feel like it isn't worth it.

My Volvo is a very likely candidate for that Pimp My Ride show on MTV, but they are in Los Angelos and I'm in Florida.

What? It'd be the perfect pimpmoblie!

I kinda dislike the term "Pimp" or "Pimped" when refering to fixing up a car, but one could use that term for mine. Its basically in "Cherry" condition.
I was alive in the 70's, and a "Pimp-Mobile" was either a Cadillac or Pontiac with plush interior. Nowady's the term "Pimp" is over abused...

By the way, I got my car started with help from a friend. It was only just a small spring that goes inside the distributor between the coil (HEI)
Anyway, I knew the spring was there, but I didn't know that it shifted out of position. Man, the spring is SO SMALL, I think a "cokehead" could probably inhale it through his nose!

Apparently, it was getting gas, but thanks to that spring, it didn't fire.
So now, my new Accel(high performance spark plugs) are fouled and sooty with fuel, etc.

We even wen't as far as changing out the jets, power valve, as well as replacing the ignition module... even tried to adjust the timing(which is still off). Just because of a little friggin spring!!!

Its harder to set the timing because the camshaft isn't stock. I have the books that show the timing for a "stock" engine, but my engine has a larger duration cam, as well as other parts that are nore "performance orientated". Its basically a classic car/Hot Rod. (A stock vehicle wouldn't vibrate a house!!)
When I can get things "dialed in", it should be a "Street Beast". Quarter mile times should be in the 13's...maybe less. (I'm being conservative with these figures)
Zero to 60 is pretty quick, providing it dosen't "bogg" down.
Yea, its all just little tuning/tweaking from here on out.

I've always owned classic old cars, so I'm used to this sort of thing...its just that my Chevelle REALLY tries my patience sometimes!!

At least she didn't leave me stranded again...

BTW: I hope nobody here gets upset about my "gearhead" car ramblings.
But I know there are at least a few people here who might be interested to read this stuff.
Besides, we need the diversity.

Its cool hearing sbout other people working on cars twitch. Its funny last saturday I spent the whole day helping take out the catalyst of my bros car was a hard job replaced the down and flexi pipes so that should be an extra 25bhp and a serious gain in torque. Only downside is her fuel emissions are illegal so may need to find away around it think it shouls be okay though the new flexi pipe is a sports stainless steel straight through with a catalyst lining so fingers crossed. be fukked if it was a supra though.

I take it you have a really great set of tools in a perfectly organised garage yeah? I spend half the time looking for the right tool always a dam 11mm when i need a 12mm.

What type of car is it, that you are going to get 25 hp by removing the cats?

2 litre-twin entry turbo based machine according to the guys who've had them on a rolling road and dyno'ed thats the extra power increment. jap performance import.

toyota celica gt four st 205 was 280bhp now 305bhp.

only downside is he blew the bloody dump valve which was standard so looks like its off to hks. Next changes are a nice set of volks and boost guage. not sure how far its going to go but maybe rest at 350bhp, thats his plan for the summer so bit of time yet to think.

I'm after a mr2 mk2 turbo myself just this insurance bastid is not feckin off have to wait a few years.

It's not just old cars that suffer, my 540 keeps developing an oil leak in the same place - just a trivial one (some feed pipes) but it's making one hell of a mess on the driveway...

It's the quietest car I've ever owned, and the fastest! 290bhp and endless torque, totally standard, not even a turbo to worry about, just 8 pistons!

Christ, I didn't even get 25 hp out of putting a set of LT's on my car. I still think there is something wrong with it.

Hey Bloodflowers

Theres a product you may be able to use, its called GUNK it dissolves engine oil a m8s 318i has a different problem every week it really sorted out the oil that had gotten in and cleaned the engine. he has the same rainbow every morning on his drive.

think its in halfords.

290 standard is pretty high i see the new evo has over 350 bhp in standard, pity its like under 11 miles to the gallon with massive turbo lag gota pay for a 2-litre engine at some stage though

Mr TWITCH - Small Update:- My copy of the US re-release of Dirty Mary Crazy Larry arrived (released 28.06.05).

Two Lane Blacktop is the next to hunt down, but I think it'll be difficult unless AnchorBay Entertainment come through. Current price $93.99.

Its hard to find some of these older "car-cult" type movies...especially on DVD.
How is Dirty Mary Crazy Larry? Is it an actual re-release, or some copy bootleg. In any case, even a copy would be cool because the movie is simply rare and limited. (Radiant Silvergun Syndrome here)

Maybe I could buy you a DVD of BlackTop and send it to you...much cheaper than $93.00 I think.?

BTW:
The engine in my Chevelle is old,, but its at least working as it should now.
All my mian timing issues were from a defective distributor cap and rotor.
Even performance parts can be defective. I got a full refund for my ignition parts and I'm using mostly stock components now(except for the coil).
So, I don't really need to run out and build a new motor right now. :D

The current engine is cool for cruising around, I won't be winning any races though...not until I build a "beast" to go into the beast.

TWITCH - The Dirty Mary Crazy Larry is definitely a re-release with new interviews with the stars etc. The disc itself is nice - its the '69 Charger dial.

I would be interested if you could find a copy of Two Lane Blacktop in a US store. I order my US Dvds from a specialist shop in London, but they don't have it listed as available. Many Thanks for the offer to find it!! I don't wish to trouble you with sending one, just finding a copy would be enough for now.

BTW: My car has a persistent water leak, but other than that its running fast & fine.
