Raiden IV or Raiden Fighters Aces?

Post by roker »

which is a better buy?

Are they both good ports of their respective games?

Tate, options, etc.?

Where's Viper Phase? jk

I would say Raiden Fighters Aces is a better buy by far. Raiden IV is fantastic, but the Raiden Fighters series is amazing, and you get 3 games instead of 1.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Both are well-done ports (and can be had for 20 bucks new) but if you can only choose one I'd go with RFA.

I found IV to be more rewarding, and helped to improve my skill level. Aces was more fun, but distracting with the amount of content. Aces is the better deal.
I wish I didn't cheat my achvmts in Aces.

Yeah, the only proper way to play Viper Phase 1 is on Mame/Mame32 or get the real deal that is the Seibu Kaihatsu SP1 cartridge + a SP1 mobo setup. It's possible to buy a barebones USA region SP1 cart of "VP1 U.S.A." for about $50.00 USD these days (even better deal if it can be had for a mere $20.00 USD). Sounds awesome if output in stereo mode with an optional RCA stereo harness adapter on the SP1 motherboard.

As for both USA region 360 game titles of Raiden IV and Raiden Fighter Aces, get 'em both and walk away happy. Plus the R-IV comes with a cool OST as a bonus.

wow

I didn't know Raiden IV was well regarded

I didn't care for Raiden III much, it's not a case of money, it's more about what I can devote my time to (better yet, what's WORTH devoting my time to).

RFA it is!

I have a feeling RFA is going to look like crap on my LCD monitor though.

I hope those filtering options come in handy.

They're both good but RFA is a better deal. That being said for $20 a pop just buy both.

I play on a 21" 1080p widesreen LCD monitor ( not TATE'd, I don't have a swivel ) and RFA looks fine to me. Of course, the graphics in Raiden IV are far superior as it was made for newer hardware. I just don't think Raiden IV is as fun to play for score.

Raiden IV is much better than III, from both visual and gameplay perspective.

imo Raiden IV is actually what III was meant to be, but it's not perfect either. If some Raiden V thing comes out with a nice scoring system and more weapon balance, I'll probably say Raiden V is what Raiden IV was meant to be :)

RFA is a great deal, even considering the games are in MAME. The leaderboards and the amount of options for practice that you get are invaluable.
I bought Raiden IV now that it's $20, and I would have to agree it's much better than III. But RFA should definitely be the first one you acquire if you're on a budget for your gaming.

Mame is good for trying out games, but for serious gameplay, I'd much rather play ports and pcbs.

I can't even get close to a 1cc on Batrider on Mame (I can do it on a PCB). My score is also shit on Mame with Garegga vs the Saturn and PCB versions.

yeah, even if RFA games are on Mame, I'd rather play teh portz!

Only buy RFA if you can remain oblivious to RF's scoring systems or have a restart fetish.

I think that RFA is definately the better value. I would buy a backup copy if any were available in my area. There is a lot to come back to in this release and the music beats the playback I get in MAME.

RIV is worth the funds if you can find I just never got addicted to it like RFA.

get both

if you had no choice, get RFA simply because it's three games and probably even cheaper

I say Raiden 4, the soundtrack is SOOOOOO much better.

Perhaps thats a shallow reason for liking it better than RFA but its true. Just buy both. :)

in that case, buy the jap RFA, you get 3 superplays in one + plus 3 games in one. then go buy the US RFA and dominate the leaderboards like a true nerd.

That's what i did anyways, after restarting a ton of times from botched grazing, for realz 8)

Are the games in Raiden Fighters Aces "emulated" or are they actually running on XBox hardware?
Also, is there any input lag?

They're ported, not emulated. No input lag.

Aces has Raiden Fighters Jet.

I think that makes the choice obvious.

Yeah, both are good fun. RFA is a given just for the price point but definitely give Raiden IV a chance.

The only bad thing about IV is that it will make your copy of Raiden III completely obsolete.

Raiden III was obsolete before it's release.
