PSP Mod

Post by FRO »

I tried to search for a thread on this topic, as I'm sure it's been discussed before, but didn't come up with anything specific. Does anyone have recommendations as to PSP modding? I'm thinking about doing this w/ my PSP, but am a little uneasy as to where to start. As a modding newb I want to make sure I don't brick my PSP. I know there are plenty of sources to buy Pandora batteries, and I'm wondering if this is something I could snag off Amazon, or if anyone has had a good experience w/ a reputable dealer of Pandora batteries. I've also considered buying one of those "PSP Mod Kits" you see advertised, with the Pandora battery, a compatible memory card, and all the instructions on how to load up the card w/ the appropriate custom firmware & step-by-step instructions. I've read through guides online for how to do it, but most of them aren't targeted for newcomers. I'm a sysadmin, so I understand "technologese" so to speak, but I have no desire to brick my PSP inadvertently & squander my wife's investment in the thing over a mod.

So what would someone suggest as either the best place to acquire a Pandora battery, or the best site for PSP modding noobs to get schooled on the proper procedure for modding?

Even if you brick your PSP, you can always bring it back to life with the kit, unless it's one of those newer PCB ones. My suggestion is to get someone who already modded his to do it for you.

EDIT: The first time I tried, I successfully modded one. It's not really that hard, but being patient is your best safeguard against bricking.

Well, my opinion won't be swayed by comments like this, as I already think it's a fine little system. Best handheld ever? Perhaps not, but certainly gives the GBA a good run for its money.

So does anyone recommend a specific kit and/or guide to use, or am I still flying blind? :P

mine must be special as I don't have this issue.

I liked god of war, wipeout, castlevania, Ys 7, lots of stuffs. A modded PSP is the best portable on the planet after the mod.

all CPS2 and NEO-GEO titles emulated alone are a huge bonus... not to mention all the other emulators.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Yeah. I checked myself to make sure CPS2 emulation runs fine. I have to lower the sound to the lowest sampling frequency, but it runs mostly fine.

Thanks for the suggestions, all. Which Magic Memory Stick method should I use, and what custom firmware would you all recommend? I'd like to load up a couple of my PSX games onto a larger memory stick to take w/ me on the go. Also, does anyone know if post-cfw upload I could still use games I've purchased via PSN? I haven't bought any yet, but I'm considering FF7 and maybe a couple others, but if there may be compatibility issues I may hold off on the purchase.

PSN games can be played on a modded PSP in ALL the same ways a PSP hard copy game can be.

Cool, thanks! So would someone recommend spending the $10 for FF7 versus ripping the ISO's from my own FF7 PSX discs & loading them up that way? Is there any difference in the emulation and/or playability? What about other titles? I'm sort of itching to play Raystorm and Raiden Project on the go.... :D

I ended up modding my PSP and creating a single eboot of FF7. I took this w/ me on a business trip a few weeks ago and it was AMAZING! I ended up staying in a suite, so I had this awesome 42" flat screen in the room, so hooking up my PSP to that & playing FF7 on that screen in the evenings was pretty sweet \m/

The PSP ain't no slouch in the emulation department. Sounds like you got an PSP-2000 series with the cool progressive-scan component video output, right? The JPN region PSP-1000 & USA region PSP-1001 doesn't have that particular capability anyways.

There is a 3rd-party device that uses an minature video camera to display the PSP-1000/PSP-1001's LCD screen on a bigger TV screen (but it only looks best if hooked up to an CRT-based one if you tweak the contrast and brightness setting manually along with the color levels at their optimal levels). Plus the 3rd-party manufacturer decided to go with shitty composite video cable setup instead of S-Video setup.

if you haven't modded it yet, there's always the tiff exploit. requires no pandora battery, and you can get CFW installed that way. its how I modded mine.

fyi one of the BEST memory sticks you can get IMO....

get two of these

http://cgi.ebay.com/16gb-16-gb-microSD- ... 3efdef0789

(i'm not the seller so look around)

get one of these

http://cgi.ebay.com/MEMORY-CARD-DUAL-SL ... 2a0592ecc5

(i'm not the seller so look around)

you'll end up with a 33-32 gig memory stick

IMO there is 0 slowdown, 0 problems I've been running my psp 1000 like this since november-december without a hitch

I have all kinds of ps1 games, emulators, etc. etc etc. on it and never a problem

Anybody in the Detroit area who could help me mod mine? I'd buy you lunch! I've got a PSP-1000 with 1.5 firmware, and I'm currently using really old Devhook. I really need to do this in person, though.

Thanks for any help!

boag its ungodly easy and really not that hard just charge your psp to 100% and follow this guide..take your time and double check things..If your THAT nervous you can watch some youtube videos on how people do it. Thats what I did first when I started messing around with my firmware.

(NOTE: not written by me just brought to the board and quickly modified some things to make it slim and easy without the paragraphs of text and pictures)

Installing 3.52 Custom Firmware on a 1.50 PSP:
(all links working at the time of this post)

* Copy the folders 'kxploitpatcher and kxploitpatcher%' to the directory; 'X:/PSP/GAME/' on your PSP's memory stick.
* Copy the folder 'M33CREATOR' to the directory; 'X:/PSP/GAME/' on your PSP's memory stick.
* Run the kxploitpatcher program.
* Download the official 3.52 update: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/1209 and rename to 352.PBP.
* Copy the 352.PBP to the directory; 'X:/PSP/GAME/M33CREATOR/' on your PSP's memory stick.
* Download the official 1.50 update: http://rapidshare.com/files/67857715/163_EBOOT_1.50.zip and rename to 150.PBP.
* Copy the 150.PBP to the directory; 'X:/PSP/GAME/M33CREATOR/' on your PSP's memory stick.
* Execute '3.52 M33 CREATOR' under GAME on your PSP.
* Then execute '3.52 M33UPDATE' under GAME on your PSP.
* Once finished, press X.

now remove all those files from your psp take a sip of coffee/beer/drink of choice and go to 5.00 m33-6 (which is the newest one at this time)

Installing 5.00 M33-6
(You must have version 3.52 M33-3 or higher!!!)

download the cfw files

http://downloads.exophase.com/109/ps...ware-500-m336/

1. Copy the UPDATE folder into X:/PSP/GAME
2. Copy the 500.PBP file into the same folder (UPDATE)
3. Execute the update from the XMB menu.
4. Start the update, it looks just like the original Sony update, but it's cfw.
5. After the update finishes, press X and reboot.
6. That's it! you've now got version 5.00 M33-6.

Some people ask me why I go up to 5.00 m33-6 and thats because most of the newer psp games won't work on the lower firmware. Why? I'm not 110% sure I'm not a coder I'm not sure how the psp reads the firmware but for example "Disgaea 2 - Dark Hero Days" doesn't work on 3.52 m33 but it works great on 5.00 m33-6. But most importantly read and read and read the instructions again and again and again check youtube videos, etc. and most importantly READ WHAT IS ON YOUR PSP SCREEN!. If you see a message like "press X to install firmware 5.00 OEM whatever whatever" don't press X lol there are many times you can back out before making the steps to alter your firmware. If you have any questions you can pm me or reply back to the thread.

I went to 5.0 M33, now I'm on 5.5 GEN-D and so far everything I have works fine. Granted, I haven't played ALL my games yet after modding, but thus far everything works. UMD movies too :)

yea, I like being able to play emulators, but none of my games I got from the playstation store work anymore, and when I did the CFW thing they were still on the memory stick. plus I'm running 5.50 Gen D-2.
