Arcade Shmups in New York City

Post by torks »

Hi,I'm living in Ireland and I have a work-related trip to New York City in few weeks, I'll stay a couple of days there.
Do you know where I could find an amusement center with some Cave shmups ?
I'd really like to play at Ketsui, Mushihime Sama, Dodonpachi, etc.
I was wondering this as New York is known to be a very cosmopolitan city, but maybe I'm dreaming too much and I won't find any of these games there :(
Thanks for your replies ;)

Unfortunately it's not a shmup city. There's next to nothing to be had. There is a good arcade in Chinatown, but I don't even know that they have any shmups at all right now.

You mean Chinatown Fair? All they have is Raiden Fighters and Giga Wing. I don't know of anywhere else in the city with shooters, though. If anyone knows, I'd love to hear about it as well.

Didn't that place near times square have a few shmups? It was across the street from a movie theater. I remember going there when I went to see the remastered Akira with a friend.

look around in the shmupmeets subforum, the personal collection of the local shmuppies beats any arcade.

Yeah, honestly, the mini arcade in my kitchen is better than anything you'll find publicly. :D

Yeah, it is a great arcade. It definitely has ambiance and if you like fighters, you're all set. But if you're strictly a shmup fan, you'd be disappointed. They also have a decent amount of rhythm games and a crowd around those as well.

man9child, when was the last time you were there, because I was think they might not have Giga Wing anymore.

They still have it. I almost 1cc'd it again around three weeks ago. I wish they had Mars Matrix. The Mars Matrix cab houses a different game. Such a damn tease.

Haha, I know, right?

Yeah I'd say probably three weeks or a month for me as well. The cab's by the door right when you walk in.

I wish they would get a Neo Geo shmup or two being as how they have so many multislots.
Didn't that place near times square have a few shmups?
Dave and Busters or the Lazer Tag place on Little Brazil Street? The Lazer tag place has been closed for a while, they might have had, I don't really remember. I would seriously doubt Dave and Busters having anything other than light gun games and skee-ball.

--------

Also, this might be a point of interest if you live in NYC: I interned at the city council over the summer, and the finance division passed a piece of legislation lessening the restrictions on the number of arcade cabinets small businesses can own when located outside of designated "amusement districts" (read: Times Square and Coney Island.) If you were located outside of those neighborhoods and wanted to have a few cabs, say in a pizza place or comic shop, in order to have more than 4 cabs, you needed a gaming license. Which could be expensive. So if every rinky dink arcade/games store in your neighborhood only had 4 cabs, that was the reason. Now those places can have up to eight cabinets without shelling out.

Chinatown Fair is the only one I ever found on Manhattan. They have up-to-date fighting games, but few shmups. I did play Mars Matrix there at least some years ago, I'm not sure if it was still in the cabinet when I visited there last summer.

Anyway, another notable arcade in New York is Barcade, in Brooklyn (388 Union Avenue). It's a roomy bar that has a huge collection of old skool coin-ops, stuff like RAMPAGE, GHOSTS'N'GOBLINS, CONTRA, GAUNTLET, ... there were some old shmups too, like ZAXXON and something from the 194x series, probably more, can't recall. Ace place!

Broadway City closed a long time ago, met the same fate as Barcode with too many people getting stabbed and all that. NY is hardcore when it comes to gaming!

Barcade in Brooklyn is pretty cool. All of the games are 25c which seems so bloody cheap in this day in age, they cycle the games on a regular basis but I don't remember them having so many shooters.

Does Peter Pan Games still have shooting cabs? That place is in Queens, might be a pretty tough trip to make if you don't know NYC that well.

Yeah, I'll second Barcade. They definitely cycle through at least one or two shooters, but very old stuff, but it's worth going anyways. It's a great bar actually. 25 cent games, a nice selection of beers on draught, good selection of games, and they do a pretty great job of keeping them in working order considering.

Barcade is a better bar than it is an arcade. I keep asking the owner to stock more shmups there ( I'd love to see Dangun ), but my taste tends to land outside of the '80s and he has both feet firmly planted there. Still a great place.

I think a newer, manic shmup would do well in there if only because of the novelty of it, but also because most people wouldn't know that it wasn't of the same generation.

Well, talked to Kevin this past weekend and he seems to be more receptive to the idea. Gave him some pricing info on older Cave PCBs. Maybe if I keep bugging him about it...

Nice, if they had a Cave shooter I would probably go there much more often just to try to stay on top of the high score chart. You should mention that there isn't a shmup arcade in the city and that a Cave PCB might be enough to attract people that are visiting from out of town and looking for a place with shmups. :)

I guess a bigger problem is the cabinet itself. What's he going to put it in. His stuff is all in dedicated cabs.

I told him he'd have to get an Egret II or Astro City cab. A cheaper board would be a good place to start.

I personally would like to see a cave shmup become popular in a US arcade, no matter where in the US it is. It could spread the genre quite easily if an arcade in NYC is where it succeeds.

An Astro Cab would be cheaper and, imo, look nicer. It would definitely stand out from the crowd, so he'd probably have to tuck it in the corner or something, but that would be really cool. DonPachi would fit in with the other stuff nicely.

Donpachi could fit in...I just don't like it as much as Cave's other games. If I could find DoDonPachi, Guwange or Pink Sweets...

I don't ever see it happening at Barcade

it just doesn't go with the overall "theme" of the place.

We're talking the only place that I know of where you'll find a Tempest and Astroids cab in great condition

I think they're more about the old school games.

Now if they could make a sequel (Barcadia!) with 90s games, I'd be heaven.

I know. There is now a Thai restaurant and an Indian joint not far from my place. That is a sign of the gentro-meter ticking upwards.
