Perfect Dark (360)

Post by Rebel Ninja »

Developer: 4J Studios
Release: March 17th 2010
Console: Xbox 360
Price: 800 Microsoft Points

Anyone else looking forward to this? I am a bit surprised by the price. I'd of thought that it would cost at least 1200 points considering the usual junk that comes out on the arcade.

Just downloaded this...I can't figure out how to make the y axis inverted. Am i just an idiot or can you really not make this game inverted? I looked through all the options and could only find sensitivity. Anyone else having this problem? If you can make the look inverted someone please tell me how so i can play this game and stop shooting people in the toes instead of the face

edit: nevermind, reverse pitch is how you do it ::face palms::

does the netcode suck for the multiplayer that is pretty much the only factor in my decision

No legacy controls or button remapping = no buy for me. Why a company wont take the extra thirty minutes to give me remapable controls is beyond me. As much as I would love to buy and play through this excellent game again, I cannot unlearn twenty years of firing a firearm with my left trigger finger.

Had about half a dozen games online (matchmaking) and the game has been lag free so far. Only thing I would say is that in one of the matches everything froze for a split second on a few occasions, enough to notice but not enough to ruin everything.

I think also if a host quits the game ends (as opposed to finding a new host), this has only happened in the post game stats for me so far which is fine, but that's gonna be pot luck whether it happens mid game.

The mere fact that it runs at 60fps was enough reason to buy, really. PD was great enough chugging along on the 64, now that it's met its hardware match it's god-tier.

Though I do also wish the controls were remappable, because I am BALLS at aiming with my right thumb (was hoping to get some Turok-style controls going)

I can't wait to try that out with some old friends. It'll be just like old times except I'll randomly forget how to play since it's hard to undo over a decade of playing with the same control scheme.

Yeah, that's another thing, I don't like the decoupling of the original button functions. No idea how many times I've tried to open a door with the reload button or tried to crouch with aim+down. The worst offender is trying to hold the reload button to switch weapon modes, though.

Never played the original, but sure as hell am finding the game awesome anyway :)

If anyone is up for some co-op on perfect agent, message me on XBL (GT is zaarock). Probably need a mic for ammo management etc unless we use splitscreen.

This isn't the N64 controller we're talking about, but the 360 pad.

And in any case that flub, even if true (the original had lots of control layouts, would be surprised if they really did take those out) is more than made up for by the high resolution mode playing at a stable 60 FPS.

Bizzarely they did take most of them out. So legacy (which was default) and southpaw (which was also in the orignal - though it makes less sense with twin sticks) have both been removed. That said if you've played almost any other FPS in the last 10 years using ther default controls then the control schemes in the n64 version should feel prety natural - but those who simply have to use a different stick layout may feel a little cheated.

i've tried so many times to complete the chicago stealth level on secret agent. i feel like an idiot, i don't know what i'm doing wrong, besides playing this old unintuitive game. why are these objectives so vague? it takes so much trial and error that you're still just frustrated even when you finally get the order of events right.

EDIT: Just finished it. Was really confused about the last objective

Meh, there is only one "vehicle" and you get told what to do with it. Also, read the full briefing, usually everything important is described there. I died two times when an exploding car hit me though

Now try to finish it on whatever difficulty you're playing in less than 30 seconds!

Zaarock and I already had a laugh about this in the shmups irc chat, but I didn't know the briefings were there. There's nothing saying "read more" just the arrows on both sides of the menu box :p

They have one stick layout option (standard) and no control option for left trigger shooting. I have shot firearms for over twenty years now, so not being able to shoot with my left trigger finger makes the game unplayable in multiplayer for me. Halo gave us Legacy controls, Call of Duty gives us Legacy controls, Perfect Dark Zero gave us Legacy controls, but Perfect Dark's port, one of the games that standardized the control layout, does not have them - it just boggles my mind. The other control scheme I can kinda use is Southpaw, which is also not represented in the game.

Yeah, I'd say that's pretty reasonable to expect at least some customization. Still, I'd rather spend a few hours being confused about the controls than trying to suffer with the N64 version's deficiencies (though I may end up doing that again anyway - after all it's the version I have and will be likely to have into the future).

Well apparently Legacy and Southpaw are being added in an update at an unspecified date with a few other control options so for those taking issue with the control setups this must be good news!
