derrickh wrote:Its a good thing I pulled the full screen lasers from an early build, or i'd -really- be taking a beating in here. About the ship getting big, the camera will eventually pull back to give you some more room to move.

But I think I understand the reactions now. Many people play games to complete them and get to the end and win. Thats never going to happen in You Will Die. For a second I was confused with the question 'why make a game where no one will ever see the last level' because the games I grew up playing were exactly like that. And thats partially what You Will Die is influenced by. You'd never get to the 'end' of Defender. You cant 'beat' Robotron 2084. Asteroids, Missle Command, Galaga, etc, just kept getting harder until you died. When playing a game like that you cant base your skill in a game by if you get to the end, but by the score you have when the Game Over screen pops up.

Its a different philosophy (probably outdated) but thats how I see games.
I like the philosophy

I don't know if you can base a whole game on that, but it's cool nonetheless.

I'll give the trial a run when I get a chance.

Derrickh -

If you destroy a lynchpin piece of the bitch (that's what I call the main thing), and it in turn wipes out other pieces connected to it, do you get points for them? Or do you need to take them out directly?

No. I am certain it does not.

The most annoying thing about this game is when you can't hit shit on the boss. It just continues to go down off the screen where you have to guess where things are and then the whole thing flipping around so you can't hit its counterparts is really stupid as well.

I totally agree - it almost seems to hide the few sections it has left when you are down to just a handful........I end up blind firing at the edges of the screen most of the time.

Another annoyance is the small size of the turrets you need to knock out (before killing the actual piece) and the inaccuracy of your weapon. I would love a beam laser special attack or something more precise to surgically remove pieces of the boss.....

Also, maybe there should be a set spawn schedule for achieving high score passwords.......it just seems like if you get some decent spawns (lasers and slow bullets only), you can get a killer score. If the spawn is the same for every player in this mode it would certainly even up the playing ground.....

Oh, yea, i forgot about that. Especially annoying when trying to pick off individual parts in order and you ruin 4 or 5 potential scoring points to just 1 because of that you mentioned.

I don't have any problem with any of the patterns. The purple bullets suck in the beginning but balance out when the levels begin to pan. I really think I could loop this game but to the point of losing my patience - I don't know if i really want to try.

Wait, you're saying you could hit level 32 in You Will Die? Thats just crazy talk. But I admit you do have a nice high score.

In the latest version, I can hit level 12-14 fairly consistently, and my top is probably level 16. Before (when the game was 'easy') I got to level 21. The new movement option the enemy has ups the difficulty quite a bit.

I don't think its too crazy. I can't count the times i got pummeled due to fatigue in the later levels. Every situation where i got nailed i could have avoided, except for a few where it was my fault for horrible dodging. In my opinion as the game pans out it gets easier. The only problem is i get lazy and start fatiguing. I got to 27 on the old build and i had full health before a crash.

I almost want to prove that I can, but then i think whats the point? If/when i play it again and get a run where i am not fatiguing and fully paying attention it will happen.

You Will Die is now listed on the Twin Galaxies Scoreboard ( http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx? ... &vi=127290 ). So now it's possible to submit a playthrough of the game for submission for true World Record.

TG has been around for almost 30 years tracking scores and it felt really good when I saw that YWD made it to their scoreboard.

You can submit scores through your method with the hiscore code? Or still gotta submit TG's way with capturing and the VHS and the mailing and the ghetto-ness?

Twin Galaxies requires you to submit a video of the entire gameplay session for a score to be eligible as a World Record. So the code alone isnt enough.

All score submissions must follow the Twin Galaxies guidelines
So the first person with a capture card wins ;) Basically this means you must record the whole game, correct? The code should have eliminated this.....

I must say 10k ms points is a great prize though....

Hate to break it to you, but respect for Twin Galaxies around here isn't exactly at an all-time high.

Checked their FAQ, you can do camcorders or direct video record through a PC. Only you still need to follow certain guidelines so be sure to check first.

I'm really too lazy to jump through hoops, but I wouldn't like the current 211,000 record to stand, thats very easy to beat. Must be a TG staff member, since they used a "referee" to verify.

Props to derrickh though for trying to advance the indie scene.....

Well, the 211k score is down and has been replaced with a whopping 855k on Twin Galaxies. On the DPA website though, the scores are a lot more substantial (12.5 million is the current high). So it looks like people are either holding their scores back until the last minute or no one is able to video their game.
