I've always felt weird needing to explain that not all shmups are the same. For some reason nobody has the imagination for that, but can prattle on endlessly about the differences between sports games.

Some of my friends are referring to ESP Galuda II as "E. Coli" now when they talk to me, because apparently it sounds like that after hearing me say the name more than a few times.

I've mentioned my interest in shmups to the clerks at Gamestop or some other game place... and usually I'm just humoring myself untill the end of the purchase. They don't respond knowingly. Oh well.

Er, except one place called Flip-a-Game. Owner was an asian dude probably in his mid-30's. They had a $1 for 15 minutes of play with any game thing you could try on their big ass screens. There I tried Ikaruga for the first time. When I did, the guy seemed to identify pretty quickly what type of game it was, mentioning that he used to play those type of games when he was a kid. Then he said, "Oh, if you like those types of games, there's one I think you will really like." And he pulled out his copy of Einhander that was selling for $80. I tried it out and was pretty amazed to say the least. Then he was like, "Just watching you play, I can tell you're going to get this game somehow someday." Well, he was right! I downloaded a copy to play in epsxe in the near future. And he also said I had a knack for the games. I also tried Strikers for the first time there on another day and possibly a few other shooters.

Just a little off-topic story :)

That's the kind of stuff I dream about happening to me.

Is he/she into FPS games? I can normally get the point across if I say that it's like playing Halo or Call of Duty if you could only hurt other players with headshots.

Whenever I use "shooter" or "shooting game" without any surrounding context, momentarily forgetting that I'm not talking to either of the 2 friends who would instantly know I'm talking about shmups.

Or when people catch me on stage 1 or 2 of a shooter on default difficulty and think I'm some sort of secretly-Japanese STG god, and I find myself wanting to counter that statement without coming off as some arrogant snob who's only reinforcing their views of anyone whose skill level is at least enough to no-miss no-bomb a Touhou first stage.

Well, while not exactly embarassing..

1) Today while my twin 4 year olds were playing DaiFukkatsu, the wife says: "I wonder if we could get anything like this for their Leapsters.."

2) On the STAGE 4 boss, my son says "Daddy get in here, we need help. This one is HUGE and I don't think we can do it. No, this one is HUMONGOUS!"

Good stuff!

My friends refer to ESPGaluda as "Itchy Beluga." Evidently thats what then think it sounds like when you say "espagaluda" a lot.

Heh. All my friends immediately understood this 6 seconds after I started a level in Shoot the Bullet thanks to how quickly crap gets crazy in it.

And to save myself from people thinking FPS when I say shooter, I say shoot-em-up [has them thinking of SNES games though] or STG [which they seem to know what I mean when I say it now]. I try to avoid shmup because it sounds totally idiotic when spoken aloud.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

After about 2 minutes (if he is still alive), he is frantic. I have a chair to sit on, but he's standing up at my cabinet like it makes a difference, sweating at the brow. His body language states that he is so tense, like he really is on the brink of getting slaughtered. Then the first boss appears and all sorts of obscenities come out of his mouth. After 1 credit he is completely *ucked and exhausted and something to the effect of "I think thats about the best I can do".

Sometimes if he is in the right mood he says things like "Yeah, take that you bastard", "here, you want some more of this?" like Montana in Scarface
Man I'd sure love to see that; I laughed my ass off a couple of times just reading your description. Can't you film him playing or something?
