Looking for a particular Shmup

Post by TheCave »

Hello everyone, I am looking for the name of a particular game and was hoping you all could help me. Several years ago, I was in the mall watching my little brother and we happened across this video game collector store that had a random arcade cab in the back. We sat there and played it for like an hour before my Mom came and got us and we left and now I'd like to know what game it was we were playing.

It was a top-down scrolling shmup in space. You did not get a choice of ship. There were 3 or so buttons, each one produced a different style of shot, and each combination produced a different style of shot as well. The biggest thing I remember was that if you held down all 3 at once, a small blade would come out of your ship that you could use to absorb certain types of bullets, and once you got enough of them it would transform into 2 giant blades that would sweep everything onscreen and then crash into each other and explode.

I've been trying to find it for a while now, but it's very difficult to do with all of the games out there to sort through. Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

Sounds like Radiant Silvergun. It's was released on the Sega Saturn in Japan - quite expensive for a while but I think prices have dropped. From what I remember the saturn version has 2 modes - an arcade mode and "story" mode. Basically the story mode is all the levels in the game - arcade you can skip (?) a level. Really good boss fight at the end.

A few years later Treasure release Ikaruga - a kind of follow up.

this is definitely Radiant Silvergun

Ikaruga is not a follow-up at all, it's like comparing Gun Frontier to Metal Black

A kind of follow up, KIND of follow up, KIND of follow up.

Doesn't the start of Ikaruga state - project RS2.

Jesus, I merely mentioned it - as it may be of interest to the op.

No, it's not. Ikaruga is another vert with colour-coded chaining. Metal Black doesn't even begin to resemble Gun Frontier.

YES IT IS THERE'S THAT SONG AND AND AND SAME COMPOSER AND

seriously, that's really vague. RSG can't be compared to Ikaruga on a Metal Black->Border Down level so

Yes it can be, far beyond Gun Frontier->Metal Black's nonexistent level. Colour coding is to the verts as the beam is to the horis.
