NTSC-J Xbox 360 owner's manual
Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
Shooting Love 200X is now available on Games on Demand. Time to update the OP.
Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
Someone on the shmups twitter said that a person in Japan managed to download US Games on Demand titles.
I don't have the points for it, nor can I get my credit card to work with my JP accounts. Could someone test to see if it's possible to purchase Games on Demand stuff from Japan now?

Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
Was he using a VPN? As I've reported elsewhere, my VPN tests were successful and have been downloading GoD titles from the JPN/Asian Marketplaces for some months now.
Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
Some questions :
1) What is best way to access UK XBOX Live on my JP 360,without wiping my JP account? If i change my locale to UK, will i temporarily be able to access UK XBOX Live, then revert back to JP later?
2) Or is it best to set up a seperate account? Can i set up multiple acocunts on different regions on same console? Im scared that if i "create new" ill wipe my existing JP account along with all the dlc.
3) Can someone outline a brief guide to using a 'VPN' to download JP G.O.D?

Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
Im assuming ill be able to DL XBL arcade games using my jp account to my jp console from the UK. I saw a couple more shmups that are available on XBLA Jpn - Galaga and Galaga Legions, which could be added to the OP. If anyone has DL'd Legions, id be interested in knowing what its like. Looks just like an updated Galaga, hope they havnt tampered with the formula too much.

Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
My 360 once had 7 gamertags attached to it simultaneously. They co-exist no problem, even if they're from different regions.
I swear this thread must have said something to this effect at least once every page.

If I end up buying a used import 360, how difficult is it to get repaired? Does Microsoft care?
Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
As long as the system wasn't modded/tampered with, it should be alright. I was able to get my JP360 repaired in the US without any issues. Your mileage may vary.shmup-o wrote:If I end up buying a used import 360, how difficult is it to get repaired? Does Microsoft care?

I've wondered about purchase vs manufacture dates. My japanese box was a launch unit, but I bought it new from some guy on amazon a year ago. Will MS accept some emailed amazon purchase receipt?

Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
From what I can tell, MS only cares about manufacture dates. You can put the serial number of your console into Xbox.com to find its warranty status.
Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
Possibly. But first, you should register the console on the xbox.com support site and check if the warranty is valid, and if so, still active. Supposedly MS will still repair out-of-warranty 360s for free with regards to RROD and E74.antron wrote:I've wondered about purchase vs manufacture dates. https://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/ ... p=register
(for those not in the US, go to the support site for your region)
Register your 360's serial number. If it's accepted, it will show you the warranty status. If it says "Standard Warranty: Expired", click on the "Request a Repair" button. Once on the "Repair Your Console" page, go to the "Problem Type:" drop-down menu and select either "E74" or "3 Flashing Red Lights", then look at the very bottom of the page where it says "Price of Repair:". Even though my warranty has expired, it shows that both of those repairs would cost me $0.00

Ketsui - April 22nd, 2010
nice, Ive been waiting a long time for that!
My final year University project is in on April the 30th so I know what ill be playing after that!
Also with regards to your first post - "Can I modchip/hack/firmware change/modify my Xbox 360 so it can play NTSC-J games/copies?"
You can now if your console was manufactured before June 16th 2009 and has not been updated past the 7371 dashboard.
The console can be jtag hacked and flashed with XBReboot, this is basically the Xbox 360's dashboard with a lot of security checks removed meaning it can boot unsigned code, aka games with region checks removed.
Might be useful info to add to your guide.

Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
This forum doesn't permit the discussion of modchipping and stuff like that. I'll update my guide to make this a bit clearer.
Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
It's not against the rules to simply change your answer to "yes" without divulging the exact details. To simply state "No" is wrong. All you need to do it state that it's possible but the forum rules prevent you from discussing the details.
Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
Is Shikigami No Shiro backwards compatible with JP 360s? I checked a few lists and didn't see it on there.

Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
How did you pay for the games? (ms points or jpn credit card?) and what vpn provider did you use?bcass wrote:Was he using a VPN? As I've reported elsewhere, my VPN tests were successful and have been downloading GoD titles from the JPN/Asian Marketplaces for some months now.
Also was this on a NTSC/J 360 or one from another region?
I would have no problem setting everything up, just want to know what you actually did for the 360 to let you buy from the JPN marketplace

Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
I used JPN points cards, and yes, it was on a JPN 360.
I don't want to reveal which VPN provider I used, but there are plenty out there to chose from with a little Google-assisted searching.

Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
Thanks for the info, do you know if this would work on a non jpn 360 or have one around you could try a game on you have purchased off GoD?
I have a JPN 360 myself however my friend was hoped he could buy some games not out over here without getting another 360.

Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
The GoD titles have exactly the same region-locking as their retail releases. Play Asia is a good source of region-locked game info per title.

Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
Cheers, that has cleared up a lot of conflicting information i've read.
Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
Question for those of you with a JP 360: How loud is it? My PS3 makes almost no sound at all, it's so quiet that I occasionally forget that I even have it on. My 360 makes a dull groan, all the time, and my 2005 model did something similar. It's definitely noticeable, and I was wondering if the newer models are quieter at all.
Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
My JPN Jasper makes slightly less noise than my old PAL (launch-day) Elite, but slightly more noise than my PS3. *Most* of the noise that comes from 360s is from the DVD drive when loading games from the DVD drive. You can eliminate this by installing all your games onto a HDD.
Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
I meant with games installed, of course. It still makes that dull groaning noise.
Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
Yes, even with games installed, it's still slightly noisier than the PS3.
Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
In my experience, the type of cooling fans inside your console is the single biggest contributing factor to how loud it is, not motherboard revisions etc. Just like the different types of DVD drives you can get, there's more than one type of cooling fan found in XBOX 360s and the quietest are the Nidec brand ones.
You can tell them apart by looking through the vents on the back and checking to see whether the fans have a silver label on them, or whether they are just plain black. The plain black ones are Nidecs and they are MUCH quieter. Luckily, my JP console has them and it's barely audible. Way quieter than any other 360 I've owned and I've had 7 during my time including 2 Jaspers.

Re: Guide to owning a Japanese 360
My JPN 360 is practically silent when games are installed, its a Jasper manufactured in August 09.
As Kubrick mentions I think its more to do with the fans in the console, my other 360 is a falcon from 2008 and with games installed thats practically silent too.
My launch console sounded like a jumbo jet, even with the TV up really loud I could still hear it whirling away... really annoying. It lasted almost 4 years before getting an rrod though so i was pretty impressed with it all things considered.
