Censorship in shmups

Post by Battletoad »

Couldn´t find a topic to this... uh topic.
This thread can be used for every censorship issue in shooters.

I recently found out that the PAL version of Gunbird 2 (Dreamcast) has the multiplayer endigs from Ayne with any other character cut out. Well actually not cut out, but the rape pictures are just a black screen with the text. Now I´m just curious... does anybody know if the US version is uncensored? I especially want to know this because I´m making some entries for a German games database.

I hope they censor the character selection screen of Pink Sweets if it gets a 360 port.

Yeah whatever...
Just if anybody knows about it wants to test it (2 player mode can be done by 1 player), I will appreciate it. If not, no problem.
I´d also like to get the uncensored version sometime and I´d prefer US over JAP for this game.

PS2 port of Ibara is a grade-A offender in this category.

I don't see anything offensive on the character select screen. Are you high?

I have no idea what caused the T rating in Gradius 5.
Yet still...green blood.

I don't get it.

There is a sperm-to-eyeball switcheroo in R-Type 3.

Doesn't look cartoony enough. Seems like PG is the minimum rating for anything live action.

Pretty much, the sole disclaimer is "Mild Fantasy Violence"...

BTW, "hell" and "damn" aren't enough to get a Teen rating since Eternal Eyes (a somewhat cartoonish SRPG) got through just fine for Everyone even with those words in its script. I guess ESRB mostly subscribes to the 7 dirty words before slapping on a "Strong Language."

What perplexes me more about Gradius V's T rating is, R-Type Final got an E. Maybe GV's "space poon" level > Final's coupling silhouettes. Then again Silent Hill 2 didn't receive a disclaimer for sexual content, so maybe the ESRB are just retarded. And I don't give a shit about them either way tbh.

Gradius V is rated 3+ in the UK. I would say that's because PEGI are sensible but they gave XII Stag a 12+ rating and Gunbird Special Edition is 7+ despite containing quite a few references to paedophilia.

Castle Shikigami II got an E despite some references to sex or other adult-ish things.

Maybe the ESRB couldn't tell because of that hack translation though.

I think he means the character select screen seen here (at about 29 seconds):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTIFrDfDbio

...to which I also say NO! Cave character art is often poor but this is pure sexy in the Masamune Shirow/ Hyung-tae Kim kind of way and I say LEAVE IT BE SCHOOL BOY!

Now I want a 360 port immediately! With an LE that includes shooting-action-ronrey-love pillow-get!!!

Cave character art is often poor

Some of it is very nice (like Ibara) but then there's instances of this....

Ugghhh. People can calm down for crying out loud. There's no need to circle the wagons and defend the sacred cow! Good grief....

Come on, people, I keep seeing Ketsui's poster bashed all over. I mean, that's the manliest thing Cave ever did, a proper tribute to Cho Aniki and probably their last scream of masculinity and macho attempts before they sunk deep into dangerous terrain, jumping the bandwagon (years later) after Card Captor Sakura dealt severe damage to people in Planet Japan. Or something like that. Or nothing like that.

Ok, don't take that seriously 'cause it isn't. :P

If we are talking of silly censorship/alteration, in RayCrisis there is a boss called "Sem-slut" and that was changed to "Sem-strut" for the western releases. Not a big deal really.

I wonder how they would handle something like Artesneit stuff... both the hentai stuff and the H.R. Giger weirdness.

I don't think I'd be able to contain my joy if they ever actually did this.

To actually semi-contribute to the topic, it's not a "pure" shmup, but if memory serves the original Japanese release of "Pocky and Rocky" on the SNES featured a possibly-topless harpy boss (a bit tough to tell from the sprite), which was changed to a rather silly-looking armored knight with bird legs and pink wings in the US version.

They probably weren't leet enough to get to the end of Final.

My guess is the shitty proportions.

And ZUN's art is objectively bad. He must feel like shit to see so many people on Pixiv draw his characters better than he ever could. Maybe he should stop the whole "drinking + character sketch + put sketch in game" thing.

can someone please explain this

am I really the only person who doesn't see what the problem is

no actually I can explain it just fine

the "problem" with both this poster and ZUN art is that people are in love with proportions, in art. hahahahahaha

it's not some three-year-old drawing with a box of crayons here (deviantart)
