This game is...... boring. SE is dead to me.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

FF13 is to games as Twilight is to movies.

Quick question.

I saw a commercial for FF-XIII on tv just now that featured some crappy song by Leona lewis. Ist that song from the game itself?

ofc not. English only, in song and speech. To it's credit, the voice acting is pretty solid, all things considered.

Just about every third dungeon-area has that song as the overworld medley.

About halfway through chapter 7 you start having to switch paradigms a couple of times a fight, which is about 14 hours in. But I'm still only fighting palette swaps, and I still can't choose my own party and leader.

Yeah, it very much feels that way.

The Leona tie-in really, really tells you where its target audience is too. Not saying that's a bad thing, but it ain't for me.

Enemy selection is meager and they're less interesting than traditional FF enemies IMO, sucks.
As for freely being able to switch characters, IIRC it's from chapter 10 on.

Don't be hating on the Flandragoras. Those things are bitchin'. The Flanitors also get mention for having the most hilarious animation when casting Rescue.

I'm playing the EU version now and: WHY IN THE WORLD DOES THE SHROUD-MENU(smokes) HALT GAMEPLAY IN THIS VERSION? Seriously, it's annoying. The decisions the localization team made are just nonsense - I mean, turning down the Vibration to such low levels where you hear the controller's motors?

Meh, I wanted 60 hours of mechanical eye candy to keep me busy while job hunting and I got it. The fact that it plays noticeably different is just icing on the cake.

Because according to Kitase in a previous interview, there wasn't enough place on 3 DVDs(360 version) for both audio tracks and apparently putting it just in the PS3 version would be unfair.

yeah, right. Damage-control-PR is getting ridiculous this gen.

I don't recall any games Square Enix has touched ever doing this. At least not within the Final Fantasy franchise. You get it mostly with ATLUS or NES America/Nippon Ichi stuff.

Why? Because they make a game instead of too many pre-rendered cutscenes that hog disc space.

As opposed to a game that all but babysits you until you're on the last disc? I think I'll take the grinding. At least I don't have to deal with waiting for the game to allow me to improve my stats.

I'm a few chapters in (don't recall where exactly; most recent salient gameplay event is that I got Odin), and enjoying it so far. I see where some of the criticism comes from, but at worst I think the game is a worthwhile experiment in streamlining the JRPG experience. Most of the freedom/nonlinearity that they removed is basically padding anyway; JRPG towns tend to be useless once you've completed the associated quest(s), and mostly-linear dungeons with little side paths/nooks for treasure are pretty much the standard. Frankly, the thing that bugs me the most about it so far is that the camera is pretty terrible for a game released in 2010. It's forgivable for a non-action game, but it's still a little annoying.

I mostly like the battle mechanics, although the rating seems to be almost entirely based on how quickly you defeat enemies, rather than on a broader measure of performance (I was a little surprised the first time I got a five-star rating with one of my characters knocked out). The scaling also seems a bit insufficient for the larger/tougher enemies, though I might just suck at staggering. Being stuck without the Commando role (Sazh+Vanille) was also kind of crappy (how does a guy who dual-wields guns not have the Commando role from the start?).

FF13 leaves a lot to be desired on the combat side of things, you can read me bitching about it here and here, if you like. I just thought it was odd you correlated game depth and cutscenes.

Not necessarily game depth as much as any gameplay at all. Too many cutscenes, interactive movie etc etc.

I can't knock it too hard though. I remember in Star Ocean: The Last Hope some of the cutscenes were so long the 360 controller shut itself off to save battery and I thought the game froze or something when it auto-paused.

sorta... just a bunch of closeted guys that never make out... the target audience doesn't even get the money shot. nothing wrong with being gay.. just don't pretend not to be for sales.

That's mostly how feel about twilight... mostly.

I'm about 22 hours in, and just got to the point where you can do some side missions. I'm loving this game so far. I can see how it's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea, but once I start playing, I can't seem to stop, even when I think I should really be doing other things  . So for me, it's a winner.

Don't want to troll this thread, so all I want to say is that if you were disappointed by FF13 and like the sort of games I do (heavy focus on interesting combat and character customization, high level of difficulty but fair), check out this post to possibly learn about another game that maybe you would like more.

If you like FF13, you can ignore this if you want and get back to enjoying your game.

Tell me, despite all its flaws, is the game worth buying? Now that you know how the game is like, if you could go back in time, would you buy it again?

At first I was looking forward to this, but after watching videos on youtube, reading reviews and all the feedback people are giving, I think I'm going to pass up.

I'd first suggest picking the game up on ebay for around 50 and then sell it for 40 when you're done with it.

It seems more linear than other versions of FF. I do not like the fact that you control one player and if that player dies your battle ends. I don't like that you can simply pick up from a battle you lost by retrying as opposed to having to start from a checkpoint. Although at the same time it leaves for less frustration but its what i remember from FF 1-3 the most.

There are some things to like about it like the equipment customization and some of the battles are epic and the graphics are pretty darn nice. It's just a different game though. Seems like Square is catering to the new generation of gaming; simplified. It's like Fallout 3. If you played the old top-down versions on the pc that were turn-based and then you jump into F3, its a way different game.

It's definitely not what I was expecting. I sorta disliked it at first and had no inclination to go back to it. I don't really like the seamless battles vs turn based but i've grown to accept it. The storyline has kept me involved in it - that and "leveling" my characters up. I'm not sure if i'd buy it again if I knew what I know now.
