Could 3D tv bring new life to the future of shumps gaming
Sony have officially announced that digital 3D television sets will available to buy this year, so could this new platform breathe new life for shumps developers in the future? I certainly hope so as i have seen live, and animated feature films in cinema digital 3D, and im sure everyone else will agree that animated 3D movies (ie; Disneys UP) look far more convincing than live 3D (ie; FINAL DESTINATION 4 in 3D).
It certainly would give a unique feel to play Ketsui in 3D.

yea, something like Rayforce or Raystorm in 3D would be too good. or a Darius game with huge 3D bosses.

There ought to be a shmup with both, 3D-bullets and non-3D-bullets. The one's that are in 3D (like in front of the TV) only have to be dodged when your ship is in 3D-mode and thus moving on the same level. Bullets in non-3D have to be dodged when the ship is in non-3D-mode either.
The game will be created by Yagawa and all bullets, regardless if 3D or not, have the same color that is similar to the backgrounds of each stage!!!

I feel it would be too distracting, you would have to learn to ignore the 3d effects to concentrate on the 2d objects which are actually a threat to you.
Unless there's multiple layers or something, but that would probably get too ridiculous.

"3D" stereoscopic film has never been anything more than a dumb gimmick. I find it hilarious that it's made some sort of comeback in recent years.
I, for one, would appreciate it if this stupid crap was kept out of my hobby (video games).

Of course, that's just an opinion.

2D > 3D.
That being said, the porn industry would certainly see a boost from this technology.

Also didn't they already do this with that Virtual Boy shooter Vertical Force?

Hope you like Arena STGs. That's all Sony likes to put out.
We could eat some drugs until we see spots in our vision. I imagine that's what 3D bullet patterns in 2D game would be like.
Anyway, Vertical Force is pretty sweet.

Apparently LCD is the worst tech for 3D and Sony are an LCD pushing company. Something to do with speed of 120hz being the fastest refresh. I Think for it to be convincing you need 240hz.
But anyway, its expensive. TV companies should allow tech like this to just filter through instead of advertising it. Too many TV changes in one decade for my liking. SD>HD>3D and all the other bits as well. The tidy tip near me looks like a TV graveyard sometimes.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
Re: Could 3D tv bring new life to the future of shumps gaming
Every time I watch a 3D movie, it takes too long for my eyes to fully adjust to really enjoy it. This would likely be the first thing I disable in any game that features it. Similar to how I always disable the current day depth-of-field effects found in several FPS games, which assume you always only look at the center of the screen. Dumb!
That said, I wouldn't be completely opposed to a shmup with exactly two planes: A flat background, and a slightly elevated foreground that only contains your ship, enemy ships, and bullets. Thus, what you really need to worry about would stand out more.

Verticle Force on the Virtual Boy already did the 3D shmup thing. It's quite hard at times to figure out if a bullet is in the close plane or the far plane.

Re: Could 3D tv bring new life to the future of shumps gaming
Working as I do at a game development magazine, I've spent a lot of time playing stereoscopic (and other) 3D display games now, and while the technology is solid and I'm open minded to the development, and it works great with some genres (I played an unnamed racing game on an Intel/JVC 3D rig just last night, and it was awesome!) I really don't think it will help an intense 2D genre like the shmup; too many distractions, and too much flicker with fast moving stuff and objects in the foreground.
If you fancy reading a nice friendly introduction to the 3D display tech in relation to games and game dev, my editor wrote a nice feature about it here. However - I'd strongly recommend reading the same article via the PDF version of the original print magazine it first appeared in, as you get all the explanatory diagrams, and a far nicer layout. You can download the issue (issue 92/March) here and find the article on page 49. Plus - you get to read our piece when Will Wright interviewed Nolan Bushnell!

No mention of SMS? That did stereoscopic 3D and it worked pretty well. It had a shmup, as well (Blade Eagle 3D). The Zaxxon and Space Harrier games for it are pretty cool, though the latter has a low frame rate.
Re: Could 3D tv bring new life to the future of shumps gaming
Dude (spadgy) where is your sense of vision, have you forgotten how far we have come as a species. We take for granted the everyday use of todays tech that never existed 100 years ago. When people like you use those words "I DON'T THINK", is the moment this industry is in f**king trouble. Virtual Reality never stood a chance to develop when people like say i don't think........

I really warm to your optimism, but unless the tech really improves the handling of stuff that moves quickly, stereoscopic shmups have a problem.
However, I DO THINK that with the current international pan-industry financial commitment to new-wave stereoscopocic tech, home screens, game and film CG development kits, Real3D projectors, cinema facilities, cameras' and all the other tech infastructure and ecosystem, there's a big chance we'll see continued leaps forward in 3D displays.
So perhaps there is room for vision with regard to shmups!
And maybe virtual reality didn't die - maybe it evolved into Natal and Wii, and even stereoscopic 3D!
Still - having played numerous current gen stereoscopic games and tech demos, I prefer sitting on a sofa or standing at a cab with a stick in my hand and a flat 2D display dazzling my eyes... for now!
Re: Could 3D tv bring new life to the future of shumps gaming
I am not sure how applicable it would be to shooters, but I have nVidia's 3D Vision for my PC, and it works very well for a huge number of PC games. Playing something like BioShock 2 in 3D really does enhance the experience. Keep in mind this isn't like 3D movies, where things are jammed in just to use 3D. With nVidia's technology, they render the existing 3D graphics to be stereoscopic, since they design the graphics cards and the 3D technology.

Re: Could 3D tv bring new life to the future of shumps gaming
I'd rather have VFX1 remade with current tech than this 3D TV bullshit. You have to wear glasses either way, why use screen in the first place?
And shmups have only marginal use for this. 3D backgrounds, and nothing else. Debris flying in your face would be cool, but to do that, it must be rendered in front of the bullets, and that's never a good thing.
EDIT: Wow, someone did remake it: Vuzix iWear VR920. Now this looks interesting!

i'd rather have viper phase 1 remade

Nope, the most convincing 3D I've ever seen was in Coraline (assuming you mean computer animation).Mills wrote:im sure everyone else will agree that animated 3D movies look far more convincing than live 3D
Re: Could 3D tv bring new life to the future of shumps gaming
Coraline made so many compositional screw ups though.
Like when something (say a lamp post) in the near foreground was so close to the edge of the screen that the (for example) left eye image of the lampost was cropped out and the right eye of the lamp post image stayed in, meaning the illusion was totally screwed.
Coraline's a classic example of bad implementation of the grammar of 3D from what I know. I saw a great seminar about it at the Imagina graphics conference.
Anyway - Way off topic! Sorry!

Re: Could 3D tv bring new life to the future of shumps gaming
Yeah Final Destination4 in 3D had the same screwed up 3D visuals in some of the scenes. The scene after the race track accident where the surviving characters are in the diner sitting around the table. the 3D images were projected before they appeared on the actual cinema screen.

Re: Could 3D tv bring new life to the future of shumps gaming
How does the saying go? - "Don't try to fix something that isn't broken".
2D works for shooters. It gives pixel-perfect playability with no disorientation issues.
The push by developers to produce games that look and play like movies should be only one facet, one of many genres, but NOT the goal for all games.
