Is the arcade version of Shiki 1 a significant upgrade?

Post by professor ganson »

As I recall, the PS2 and XBox ports look ok, not great. I haven't checked out the PC port yet. I'm sure a lot depends on your set-up, but has anyone strongly preferred the graphics of the original?

Considering that the Taito G-Card of Shikigami No Shiro is running on a low-res 15.7kHz RGB monitor setup running in arcade spec 60fps framerate...it looks nice considering the hardware that Alfa Systems had to work with in order to develop it. Plus there is the option to unlock a secret character on the G-Card version of SnS worth checking out. The price for a barebones SnS G-Card is around $60 or thereabouts these days. Add another $100 or so for a required Taito G-Net motherboard and you're halfway to playing it properly with a Supergun or candy cab setup. ^_~

Yeah, if I want to play SnS as it was meant to be played on the original arcade hardware setup, it is a better shmup experience than if you were to play it on the PS2, XBox or on the PC platforms. Other fellow shmuppers would say to direct your attention to the better arcade shmup experience that is the Sega Naomi Shikigami No Shiro II (with it's better and more refined gameplay/game mechanics) GD-Rom cartridge instead (but that one requires a high-res monitor -- you can still play it in 15kHz low-res mode if you want to).

Excellent. Thanks, PCE Fan X! I didn't know about the extra character. You've definitely got me interested now.

Glad to have gotten you interested in checking out this G-Card version of SnS, professor ganson. It certainly is more affordable nowdays compared to the higher prices that it used to command about four to five years ago in the Japanese PCB shops. ^_~

FYI: Any new high scores and high score intials that you enter on a SnS G-Card, it is saved directly to it for posterity and safekeeping and will still be there upon booting it up the next time you play it. Same thing applies with this secret "unlockable" character as well. ^_~

Recently I played the PS2 version this and now I know why the person hate this game (bad looking graphics and low quality sound). I could note which PS2 version feels like the MaMe version in all.
Now let say one important thing: Until last month I had played only XBOX version (Shikigami no Shiro Evolution) arcade mode and got really surprised e frustrated after play the MaMe and PS2 version. Why? Because Shikigami no Shiro Evolution have Graphics and music highly improved in comparison the MaMe/PS2, but in other hand it FEELS highly different, is very hard for explain this with my bad and difficult English but SnS EVO FEELS highly different from MaMe/PS2.
Any thing like:
- Seems harder.
- Character have one HIGH WEIGHT!
- You need deal with one slowdown/Speed up velocity mainly during the 5-1 boss milking.
- I really don't wanna say about kuga's shiki because I still have not certify. :x

I always loved Shikigami I but after play MaMe/PS2 I got frustrated because I guess I would can score better in MaMe/PS2. Fuck Graphics and music highly improved I wanna game play. I NEVER WILL PLAY XBOX VERSION AGAIN.

Pc version seem be one average among XBOX and MaMe/PS2.

Cool!

Does anyone know if the Xbox ports will work on a Japanese 360 via backward compatibility?

Thanks

No entry for 式神の城 on the XBox 360 JP backwards compatibility list.

Since they're ported from the same PS1-based hardware, I imagine PS2 Shikigami is about like PS2 Psyvariar in terms of being roughly graphically identical to the original, any upscaling aside.

No they do not work, I personally tried them. But by the way, my Japanese original Xbox came this week and so now I can play those 3 games.

So, I finally got the arcade version, and I have to say it looks pretty crap. It may be an upgrade on the ports I've played in the past and I don't care that much about graphics, but this is pretty difficult to look at. Iirc the art style is fairly distinctive as the game progresses, so it's a shame that there isn't a polished-looking version.
