Colourful console shmups?

Post by savage666 »

Hey everyone, I'm wondering if anyone can recommend some top choice shmups -- vertical or horizontal -- for the Genesis, TG16, SNES or any other common systems from that time period. I'm looking for something with bright and colourful graphics, something akin to Toaplan shooters like DOGYUUN in particular. Something about the way that game looks gets me every time. In fact, the names for any other games for these systems that you enjoy playing would also be appreciated. Thanks all.

Parodius (Any)
Harmful Park (PS1)
On the Genesis Hellfire is the most colorful shmup imo.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I remember Super Fantasy Zone on the Mega Drive to be pretty colorful as well, I've even picked it up on the VC a little while back. Doesn't seem anything like a Toaplan shooter though, but it is quite colorful.

The original Parodius for the MSX (ported to the PSX and Saturn later on) isn't very colourful (compared to 16-bit shmups, that is).
Zanac X Zanac (PSX), Seirei Senshi Spriggan (PC Engine CD), Super Aleste/Space Megaforce (SNES), some other Compile stuff I guess, Gun Hohki/Mystic Riders (arcade/MAME), Kaitei Taisensou/In the Hunt (arcade/MAME, PSX, Saturn, Win95), Wonder 3/Three Wonders (CPS-1, PSX, Saturn), Dragon Blaze (arcade/MAME, PS2), Ultimate Ecology/Eco Fighters (CPS-2)... I find Sexy Parodius looking particulary soothing, though.

I don't care for Air Zonk all that much personally, but it is very colorful. There's also Space Pariodier game, which is quite good but extremely easy.

Take your pic of either JPN region or USA region Magical Chase for the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 platform. Of course, the USA region MC has the first stage's background scenery redone + some other revamped stuff added in compared to it's original JPN PCE MC counterpart. Both are quite colorful for a PCE/TG-16 game indeed but falls under the cute'em up shmup catagory + it's a horizontal (yoko) based side-scrolling shmup at best.

The classic TG-16 shmup of Air Zonk seems like it was destined to appear as a bonafide arcade Jamma PCB experience with it's excellent usage of the color spectrum. Irem followed up with some very colorful arcade-only releases like Ninja Baseball Bat Man PCB running on the M-92 mobo hardware setup after seeing that such vibrant and colorful games such as AZ could be done on the PC Engine console.

one game I found incidentally is Truxton (Genesis)
Pretty sweet stuff, also I'm enjoying
Super Aleste (SNES)
Gley Lancer (Genesis)
and a few others not coming to mind

EDIT: Recca for the NES?! I can't believe how intense this game is, great graphics, fast gameplay, modern style, simply stunning!

First thought to cross my mind. Scarily the next thought was of that damn Tanuki from Sexy Parodious.
