This is basically correct, but I still think using the word "primitive" has too many dicey connotations, some of which are unnecessarily negative. These are very advanced graphics for the 2D medium, so while the technology might be primitive, the idea that the graphics themselves are primitive doesn't sit well with me. The end result of what is produced is not primitive simply because it uses old technology -- look at DaiFukkatsu, for instance.

Indeed.

To all you haters, just pretend you are eavesdropping on someone else's conversation. It doesn't have to be to your liking. I was beside myself that they didn't mention Defender when they were talking about early hori's, but they aren't me and their personal history w/ games is different than mine.

Ray and Sean certainly have an artistic outlook on stuff (check out their other podcasts for reference, heh) and that's just how they enjoy things. No harm there. In fact the shame is on those who don't/can't appreciate the artistic aspect of games that the creators poured a lot of themselves into.

I agree.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the podcasts. I listened to it the same way I read this forum: not expecting to agree with everything (although I did on many points). I think they did a great job, and I'm looking forward to catching up on all the non-shmup podcasts as well.

so what can you only like things "artistically" if you subscribe exclusively to the gaming views of gladhanding quipster shills

Unfortunately, the general gaming populous does see 2D as primitive. It's not the 2D playing field, it's the canvas. If you don't believe the playing field part, look at how many people have come out of the woodwork for Street Fighter IV. Every bit as 2D gameplay as it ever was. Wrap stuff like Odin sphere around 3D models and I can see many folks giving it a chance that would have otherwise written it off.

Unfortunately, people can't get the technical evolution out of their heads. They see 2D canvas as old and tired because that's what came first. They should take an artistic standpoint and merely see it as one way to "present" a game.

Elitest!? I have no idea where you got that idea from, we're the nicest, most humble and well mannered bunch of ppl on the internet :P

I listened to all 3 podcasts and for the most part enjoyed listening to it, I hope you revisit shmups in the future. Even the parts i wasnt all that into (the artistic merits of ikuraga and the ocational name dropping without going into any detail) was alot better then most of the other podcasts on shmups ive listened to, (rant on) they seem to spend most of the time talking about the definition of what shmups are which is annoying as me and most of the other ppl listening bloody well know what shmups are  (rant off)

I'm really glad this thread exists, cuz now I can finally tell kid aphex and orange apart. Man oh man, after reading some of these threads, I'll never make that mistake again.

Now all I need is for kengou to make a thread so I can tell him apart from all the new region-free posters.

Nothing can ever possibly top "let's feed giga wing," although that one's technically not a pro review.

It's not on the xoxak account now, but I remember seeing it a while back. Someone made a "Let's Play" of Giga Wing where he died every five seconds, and Rob made a commentary on his commentary. Just my guess, Rob removed it because he didn't want to randomly be a dick to some guy on the Internet, though I thought it was more funny than dickish.

Credits to mikwuyma for saving this.

I do think it's dickish to the max, and even though Rob does it with panache and doesn't mean to be cruel, I would be shocked if the target or just people in general didn't take it the wrong way. It's still all worth it though. This guy just sets him up and he knocks it out of the park!

Not about his level of play, but some of the more personal attacks (his only friend Terry or whoever) were almost too much. Again, not my opinion but how they could be construed. Although they were still hilarious and probably also true (that he's speaking quietly so he doesn't disturb his parents for example).
