It's good, isn't it?

Xiu Xiu - Dear God, I Hate Myself - Definitely the first Xiu Xiu album to make me sit up and take notice.
Tujiko Noriko - Solo - Still listening to this album after a few years now and noticing new things, which is obviously the very definition of a brilliant album. Shits all over Bjork, anyway (:

Black Cobra - Chronomega

Thanks to my Southern Lord Records 2010 Vinyl Subscription. The deluxe edition of What We All Come To Need is amazing.

Damn straight. I think that the pacing is a little off but it's solid gold otherwise. I've been listening to Ys for 3 years straight and it still does it for me, here's to the next 3 years and beyond.

I'll maybe do a tentative top 5, but this stuff changes all the time.

1. Ayreon- The Human Equation
2. Rush- Hemispheres
3. Dream Theater- Images And Words
4. Pink Floyd- The Wall
5. Porcupine Tree- Fear Of A Blank Planet

I dunno, it's really hard for me to choose a top of all the albums I love.

I think that must be why it's called the "current favorite albums" thread and not the "favorite albums of all time which you can never ever change your mind about ever" thread.

And my big album lately (besides playing Blue Cheer every day) is Electric Wizard's self titled album. I'm a huge fan of all their stuff but this one has the most rockinest bluesy feel to it. I need my heavy shit to ROCK. what's the point of being all heavy 'n stuff if you don't even rock?

I agree, their self titled doesn't get the respect it deserves. Everyone talks about Come my Fanatics and Dopethrone but the first one is just all kinds of awesome and totally unique amongst their albums.

Agreed. I've only listened to Have One on Me once and it's going to take a hell of a lot more than that to appreciate what she's done with it. Ys was so dense it took at least a month until its genius sunk in.

Are any of you guys going to her show at the Royal Festival Hall in May?

I think this band is underrated. Part of their problem is that they don't really fit neatly into any genre-- too mellow for many math rock fans and too quirky/mathy for many post rock fans. Both of their albums are worthwhile-- the one you mention is impressive for its overall quality for such a long album; the other one is really strong as well, though not quite as epic.

Her show at Green Man in 2007 was stunning, perfect scenery for the music. I'm hoping to get to the gig at the Academy 2 in Manchester with Six Organs of Admittance but noone seems to be selling tickets yet.

Renbourn's the definite wildcard here. Hope you dig instrumental acoustic folk.

Speaking of folk music, the following has to be the best homage to southern folk music ever

rolling stones - exile on main st.

Don't be fooled by all the radio hits: this album is musical genius from beginning to end. I've been enjoying it a lot lately, even though I know pretty well every note.

That's one of my favorite parts of the whole record. I guess it's second place to the self titled song at the end. That one is just all kinds of killer. When the wizard turns to speak to them and it's the smooth little guitar lick is just soooooooo cool imo

At first (I discovered these dudes in about 2001) Come My Fanatics was my favorite album and I still LOVE the first two songs but as an album it just doesn't swing enough for me to play it too often. I gotta be able to tap my foot at least a little.

I pretty much call anything with heavy guitars that sticks to a medium or slow tempo 'stoner rock' and I've always leaned alot more toward the Fu Manchu/Nebula end of the spectrum for exactly the reasons listed above.

John Renbourn is great. I saw him play a wonderful show a few years ago that hit every one of my folky buttons, and he even did a version of Blues Run The Game and Angie. I also love his playing on the cover of Goodbye Porkpie Hat with Bert Jansch.

Just got hold of Anthony Braxton's 12+1tet (Victoriaville) 2007 and it's a glorious noise. Felt somewhat like GTM at the start but after the arranged string of 8ths in herky-jerky style it has opened up a lot more. Mr. Braxton seems to be enjoying himself by switching instruments and I've heard some of his wonderfully odd oversized sax work.

Listening to the first Jack Rose album I ever bought, 'Red Horse, White Mule' on Eclipse Records. I hung out with this dude a few times; he was very cool, saw him play in Providence, Boston and up in Vermont. Just heard he died back in December from a heart attack. Really hard to believe as we were the same age. This album is still a really good one--I think my favorite. Solo acoustic folk guitar (entirely instrumental) in a style that never really got very far outside of a few practitioners like Fahey, Basho, Richard Bishop, etc. Rose was a big guy and he always looked like he could have crushed the neck of his guitar with one hand, but I haven't met many players as good (both technical and subtle) as him. Well, better to burn out than fade away.
