Ray Force could make an interesting film. It would basically be the Death Star scene from Star Wars: A New Hope, but for two whole hours.

Plot (as I recall): The CONHUMAN supercomputer that governs all the Earth has decided that humanity is the greatest problem left and destroys 99% of the population. The survivors make their way to space, past the moon, but are being hunted down. In a last-ditch effort, they launch a pair of pilots in the most advanced space fighters ever conceived to destroy the Earth and end the terror.

It would basically be Star Wars-esque space battles, against Skynet! The game's level structure-space, moon, upper atmosphere, surface, underground, etc.-could make for creative scene transitions, much like the levels all fit together to form a larger structure. For a movie, the lock-on lasers could be done using Souky-style special effects. Get some of the original music arranged to better fit a movie, and hunt down the composers to get some new tunes, and you'd have a solid score.

Was anyone else disappointed that the movie Shoot 'Em Up wasn't a guy walking forwards and getting nicked by bullets?

Always loved how Rayforce turned the usual "defend Earth from alien invaders" plot on its head. In that game the invader is you, and the genocidal monster is essentially Earth itself.

If this works, then Einhander movie would work as well 8)
In an alternate universal, Soldier Blade II has already been crafted by Hudson Soft and Compile with proper tate this time around (c) PC Engine Fan X!
Sega tried and failed. Nintendo didn't even try. (c) Specineff

the 1st loop ends with the commander telling the pilot that he was destroying fellow forces without knowing it, and the "mechanized alien" that the pilot had destroyed was a lost fleet that the pilot had learnt about from the academy. It was all part of the commander's plan, where the pilot will ultimately be destroyed by an advanced fleet of fighters after his mission was complete.

If the player completes the 2nd loop, the game ends with the pilot realizing that the DonPachi's goal was to annihilate the human race. Ironically, the existing problems of overpopulation, environmental pollution, and arms races were solved by this war. The pilot suspected this was DonPachi's plan, but this theory could not be confirmed.

Last night watched rerun of Aces: Iron Eagle III, which is look like average 80's action movie + Strikers 1945 (multinational WWII fighters) or 19XX/1944: The Loop Master (the main character has an awesome P-38 Lightning and the final bad guy flying a black prototype fighter similar to the final boss of 19XX)
Louis Gossett Jr. is awesome and that's show how a movie adaptation of shmup is...

Speaking of, no offense, but what if, Uwe Boll develop movie based on shmup instead?

I was seriously in love with Last Exile, back in the day: Progear still was emulated only on Razoola's machine (seriously, CAVE shooters must be the most hoarded games after Crazy Otto) and I was eagerly awaiting for the day I would've been able to blast off some Motorouin off the skies. For any Progear lover, that is indeed the ultimate viewing pleasure - just switch Klaus with Bolt and Lavi with your favorite bratty gunner.

As for DoDonPachi, I agree it would come out as a majestic mindfuck, complete with global devastation (by the end of DDP, one third of the global population was toast, if I recall correctly a few translations), weapons of mass destruction, a face-heel turn of just about everyone but you, killing comrades and civilians alike (oh come on, does Ikeda expect you to go trigger happy above an entire city and not kill anyone?), and of course Longhena Gottvin telling you that you may now die.
Priceless.

@Igb: i translated the plots for a few CAVE games (Ketsui, Mushihime, DDP/DOJ/DFK) and put them on Wikipedia, go take a look unless they already blasted them off with a "no one cares" sign - they deleted my page on Hibachi, go figure. Basically, the plotline is an overarching one, starting from DP and ending (almost) in DFK.
