You guys really think much of Progear's plot? As you can guess I'm not picky when it comes to stories in shooty games (who is?), but Progear is just too silly to make something big of it. By the way, Last Exile's got freaking sweet dogfighting and fantastic plot. You can't go wrong with that show by any means.
I don't really care for the plot in any shmup, they're always flimsy, but in terms of design I think it's got more scope for a movie than Dodonpachi or Raiden.
(It was kinda based on a series of movies in the first place.)
That would be awesome. But I think that regular audience will not get it, unfortunately

Come on God, answer me. Why do I consider Nausicaa and Last Exile extremely overrated? Where is justice? Where is punishment?

If only Vic Viper turned out to be piloted by Samus Aran (as a part-time job for example)...
I believe Miyazaki films are heavily inspired by the works of Moebius (Arzach, The World of Edena, Incal...). That's the artist who designed Panzer Dragoon by the way.

You can also tell from their works that Moebius is pals with Philippe Druillet. It's alright as long as you've got enough of your own style, which Miyazaki has beyond doubt.

In terms of the looks, Last Exile should suit your needs (make sure to watch it with the original, Japanese voice acting). Man, am I glad Last Exile doesn't share Progear's plot...
Thanks Obiwanshinobi! That looks right up my street!
On the subject of Progear, I agree exactly with Skykid, in that it's the aesthetic, atmosphere and mood of the game that makes me want to see it as a movie...
And Drogoforce - there's a Xevious anime eh? I wonder if it ever got a translation.
Wouldn't Porco Rosso have a feeling close to Progear? Maybe with some touches of Howl's Moving Castle and Steamboy! Who knows.
Panzer Dragoon needs an animated movie too.
As for Espgaluda... Escaflowne anyone? I remembered there was this guy, Dilandou Albatou or something like that, who was a princess but was turned into a psycho guy, heh. Plus the designs were by Kawamori, ergo, the Oreades and Alseides (the bad guys with cloaking devices and those liquid metal claws) retro-tech armours were freaking kickass. Just replace the atlanteans for fairies and anti-gravity devices plus more cross-gender people.
"This episode contains TRAINS!" *noisy explosion* (come on, gotta love those trains, they have the best exploding sound)
NOW REACHES THE FATAL ATTRACTION BE DESCRIBED AS "HELLSINKER". DECIDE DESTINATION.
As everyone knows, there also exists the Salamander anime... Though according to HCG101 it's shitty

- Dodonpachi series, more because of gameplay than because of its story (which I don't know, or didn't knew until reading this thread :p); I'd like to see some angry BEEs, Hypers, dolls, and shots with lasers.
- Armed Police Batrider (the police team was apparently sent into a trap by its department chief, too)
- Battle Garegga (the fight against Glow Squid's final form must also have that deep, awesome bgm. Also, there must be shooting through the flamingoes, bombing through the stage 4 rails -- in fact, bombing could be frequent in this movie -- and the last 3 stages would look nice on screen)
- ESP Galuda (especially because of Seseri; she might even be "playable" :p)
- ESP Ra De (the setting is similar to our current time, so it could -- for better or for worse -- be compared to X-Men or HellBoy or something similar; but these series don't feature danmaku)
- Mahou Daisakusen (it has a magical, medieval-like world, but wait until you reach stage 4.. otherwise, there's not much room for action, I think)
It would be awesome if Black Sabbath's 'Glory Ride' was included in Battle Garegga or DoDonPachi movie OST - the lyrics are surprisingly fitting

Dragon Saber: For the prologue, have a 8-10 minute recap of Dragon Spirit's events. After that, flash forward to Huey & Siria in another time - with Huey receiving the Dragon Saber, then using it to fight off monsters in a ruined city en route to the mountaintop where the two transform. There, they get ready to unleash Reign of Fire style destruction on their enemies. Some of the game's own music (the intro, stage 1, and stage 4) would lend itself well to being arranged for the movie soundtrack. Have some additional new music themes for the movie done - good choices for this would be Vangelis or Tangerine Dream.
I'm surprised no one's mentioned Robo Aleste. You pilot a badass robot and you find out that your brother has betrayed your country; now you must seek revenge and blow up a lot of shit along the way.
Varth I guess. I like how busy the city looks in that game; you don't feel like all these decorations has been set up for you alone to play around. Now Varth the Movie could be telling a story of certain complex military operation during some major city riot à laBlack Hawk Down, with the pilot's mission being just one aspect of the lot, and the adventures of civillians, ground troops etc. depicted as well so we'd get to see how it is to be down there during our sky job.
It does sound like some fucked up MMO by the way. When you get shot down, you respawn as a civillian or ground soldier with a simple objective (to reach certain point or to defend the base), whilst more lucky (or skillful) gamers keep playing a shmup above your head.

Second. A Guwange movie, if properly done, would just be all kinds of bad ass. I'd have the Ninja Scroll guys do it.
+1 to dangun feveron. the funkiness would be outta control
+1 to batrider. that would actually make a really good anime...if it was made 15 years ago. anime since then has sucked aside from a couple of things, like deathnote.
+1 to gunbird if it's an anime and everyone is voiced by Scott McNeil

I would say a Guwange or ESP R.A.D.E. would be good movie adaptations if done right (big IF). It's weird I was thinking of just this today before seeing this thread.
cant believe no ones brought up batsugun, its already got a manga with some background stuffs. they could do one of those humorously crappy live action, hehe.
also like to see a mushi live action with some reco actionz

Mushihimesama made by Miyazaki. A more realistic (and properly dressed... or not) Recco, bigger and greater bugs and ridiculously detailed animations on everything. Make it happen.
If you haven't seen it already, I'd recommend Studio Ghibli's (kind of) first film Nausicaä. It's essentially Mushihimesama without tits, and was obviously a huuuuuge influence. Awesome film, with lots of explosions and shit.
Also, Porco Rosso is Muchi-Muchi Pork! without tits. Discuss.
kengou wrote:I always thought the plot of DP/DDP was interesting enough for a movie.
DP:
the player assumes the role of a pilot whose mission is to actually survive an eight years long training mission, where he/she is supposed to prove his/her worth as a fighter and gain entry to the future elite squadron known as the DonPachi Squadron - which is featured prominently throughout the entire series. The twist lies in the fact that the enemies are, in truth, the player's very own comrades, posing as enemies and sacrificing their lives for the sake of allowing only the most skilled pilots to pass the test, and survive.
DDP:
the 1st loop ends with the commander telling the pilot that he was destroying fellow forces without knowing it, and the "mechanized alien" that the pilot had destroyed was a lost fleet that the pilot had learnt about from the academy. It was all part of the commander's plan, where the pilot will ultimately be destroyed by an advanced fleet of fighters after his mission was complete.
If the player completes the 2nd loop, the game ends with the pilot realizing that the DonPachi's goal was to annihilate the human race. Ironically, the existing problems of overpopulation, environmental pollution, and arms races were solved by this war. The pilot suspected this was DonPachi's plan, but this theory could not be confirmed.
With some fiddling I'm sure either or both of these could be adapted into a serviceable movie.
this somewhat reminds me of the book Ender's Game in that children are trained to be elite generals at a very young age. their training has a lot of simulation/video game-esque scenarios that ultimately end up being actual battles. i believe there is a feature film planned for that book actually.
