360- best shmup system since???
OK, when all is said and done (Death Smiles, Futari, Galuda II, DOJ(patched), Ketsui, Ikaruga, Raystorm HD, Raiden Fighters Aces, Shikigami III...and whatever other games you like...and what other surprises we may have in store), where would you put the 360 in the ol' shmup machine list? I think it'll out do the Dreamcast and the PS2, just in terms of sheer quality. Can't top PS1 or Saturn.
What do you guys think? Little premature, since I know a lot of people haven't played DS, and we haven't played Galuda II yet...or Ketsui...or Raystorm....but fuck it, i'm starting a topic anyway.

When it comes to getting quality shmups, sure, I think it does quite well.
However, my dad and I have had absolutely horrible luck with our Xbox 360 systems. Our first system, bought two years ago, has been sent in for maintenance once every 2.5 months ever since getting it, all for the same 'Open Tray' error. This adds up to 10-12 times. Seriously. My own system has been sent in twice, and my brother's has been sent in once. All for the same fucking problem. I can turn on my 20+ year old NES any goddamn time and the games will start up and work as if the system was brand new.
They just don't make 'em like they used to.

Oh, that goes without saying. I just meant the library. I'm on my second system now, and i'm SURE i'll have to get another one in the future. Ridiculous, but what ya gonna do?Momijitsuki wrote:When it comes to getting quality shmups, sure, I think it does quite well.

if Raizing makes a Battle Garegga release for Xbla, the 360 for me will "surpass" PS2, still, nothing can top the Saturn

I would cry tears of joy if any kind of Raizing collection(like the Psikyo ones) were released. The lag in MAME messes them up, and I love them.
You're right about the Saturn. It was on fire.
Still, I think the PS1 is a seriously underrated shmup machine.

Yep. Besides the Cave ports the 360 got nothing compared to PS2, Saturn or most other older consoles.Rob wrote:Best system for Cave ports.

As for the Topic at hand I'd say since PSX and Sat. Both had comparable respectable libraries.

I think that the 360 is getting a nice library of shooting games, but IMO it is not comparable to what the saturn or the psx offered.
I don't like digital content at all, and we've got in Xbox LIVE some nice titles as well as the Black Labels for DS and Futari. It is that kind of shit that puts me off.

True, but the reason most of our NES' still work is that they basically house a single PCB. There's little to break or burn out or clog up with dust.Momijitsuki wrote:

You are not going to find a library comparable to the one shared between PS1 and PS2. PC Engine and Saturn might have had similar amounts, but for shooters both old and new its all PS2. PC Engine might actually have the most shmups by number, I think this has been discussed on the forums before.

Yeah but you'd think with technological advances in the past 20 years they'd be able to bypass such issues

Re: 360- best shmup system since???
360 is obviously the place to be for shmups this generation, but that's not saying much. I think it's a stretch to say that it even beats PS2, let alone PS1 or Saturn.
I think it's sort of the other way around. It's precisely because they're trying to use newer and more complex stuff that they fail more. Until the PSX/Saturn/N64 generation or so, it was typical for consoles to use "mature" tech. NES is pretty much 1970s-level technology, just applied a bit more cleverly and using bigger ROMs than anyone could afford in the 1970s. Likewise for SNES, Genesis, Neo-Geo et. al. in the 90s with 1980s technology. It's not just a coincidence that Wii is the most reliable console this generation.Momijitsuki wrote:Klatrymadon wrote:

Re: 360- best shmup system since???
I'm just glad that we even have a dedicated system this year! The 360 is certainly the king of arena shooters, but I think it might be a bit premature to rank it right now...we still have a few years left, who knows what else will come out...
Anyway, PC Engine/Duo will always be the greatest shooter system in my mind!

Re: 360- best shmup system since???
It hasn't even surpassed the PS2 yet for folks who aren't enamored with Cave shooters, but if we're predicting where the 360 will end up... probably still not above the PS2 unless some more developers get in on the act. But for those who think Cave epitomizes shooters, then yeah, 360 would be way better than any other console.
Re: 360- best shmup system since???
i actually bought a jap ps2 for the cave shooters couple years back and now only ever play psyvariars and homura on ps2 so yeah going by that 360 is not the best yet for me .

Re: 360- best shmup system since???
I thought the best shmups on the PS2 were Gradius V, Galuda, and DOJ. After that, probably Dragon Blaze. After that, a number of decent games. Nothing that really got me going. So, I guess that's why the 360 looks to outdo the PS2. PS2 had V, but hey 360 has Ikaruga, so it gets it there. I tihink the Cave shmups are going to be better overall. But yeah, there's isn't a ton of variety. But I didn't think there was a ton of good variety on the PS2. You had a lot of OK stuff.

Gets what? It's cool when old games are still available for people, but Gradius V was an original release.evil_ash_xero wrote:So, I guess that's why the 360 looks to outdo the PS2. PS2 had V, but hey 360 has Ikaruga, so it gets it there.

The PS2 is VERY overrated on this forum.

That's true, but it's still available if you want it. And it's in HD, which is a bonus. Same thing with RayStorm once it's out. We're not going to get a lot of "original releases" at this point, sad to say.Rob wrote:Gets what? I say 360 cos of HD graphics in shmups. (Especially Cave.)
Re: 360- best shmup system since???
Difficult to say. I don't think the 360 has matched even the PS2 yet, and I'd nominate the Saturn above that.

? ps2 has access to ps2 and ps1 library ... It also featured mostly very timely releases. Gradius V was many peoples favourite shmup for a long time; I'd say its hard to say its overrated - in comparison to what? The n64 and dreamcast?Kron wrote:The PS2 is VERY overrated on this forum.
I feel the saturn gets a fair deal of deserved love, for good timely releases.
360 is getting late ports from cave, a couple of very old ports and a couple other originals - in all this lessens the sense of discovery/timely delivery... That being said I do think its a good shmup system; which will hopefully only get better.
My view; best shmup system since the last one (duh) - the relief being we can start to say it is becoming a good system to buy for shmups; if they have another hardware revision that increases reliability of the system further, plus further extensions on the xbla system, and more releases, I think it will clearly earn the caveat of a great shmup system.
Re: 360- best shmup system since???
I got my ecksbawks triple 60 in November 2008. I haven't had to send it in for repairs or anything. I wish Microsoft would do something about the D-pad on the stock controller (for those who don't want or can't afford sticks), however, and no, a limited run of green controllers does not count.
