That guy is brilliant, I loved his Star Wars Ep.1 review (the whole hour of it) it was hilarious and damn accurate.

I had Dances with Wolves + Princess Mononoke + Halo = Avatar

Plot aside, I think it was the best looking movie I've ever seen. Even with the plot I loved it.
just watched it for the first time yesterday and thats almost what I thought to myself when it was over. It was just Pocahontas + Halo = Avatar. Not impressed by the story at all and it felt mediocre. during the final battle I was hoping for the humans to drop that bomb and end it all...

first real 3D movie Ive watched too and was really impressed by the visuals. Did get a slight headache at some point but dunno why or what caused it?

The story is dumb, but if you were watching that movie for the story then you probably have hyper-nerd-autism and/or need to go outside instead of using the computer ASAP.
As though CG really makes any difference these days. I'm actually quite sick of it.

Um, the point of any movie should be the story and the characters. without that you don't have anything but, like the redletter reviews say, a theme park ride.
Hey, maybe we should start using puppets and animatronics again. I heard henson studios are super fantastic now! that probably costs less than rendering about 30 seconds of this film!

Great visual effects and shitty unoriginal plot is still shit. If I ever meet James Cameron, I'll demand a refund.

I'd have to agree. Looks great....but its like a pretty looking video game that doesn't have great playability. The story is mediocre and there's nothing in it that would make me rewatch it.
I believe that rewatchability is the mark of a good movie.
The only good thing is the message: No deforestation. Promote conservation.

The lead man could walk past me in the street and I would never recognize him, ever.
Somehow he's as bland as Shia LaBeouf.
Maybe that's what Cameron wanted - a Zelig.

You are demanding a meaningful message or a deep story from a movie that no observant person would ever expect such things from. It's a visually-stunning movie, and that's what it's supposed to be.

This is akin to watching a Pixar movie and not enjoying it because of its simplistic characters or basic plot structure. It's dumb. Just because Avatar has a more serious delivery does not mean it doesn't require the same type of attitude during viewing.

Enjoy what the movie offers and don't pretend like you're actually criticizing Serious Art in a blockbuster Hollywood movie. That's a mark of bad taste.

I get what you're saying captpain, but what I'm really inferring is that this movie doesn't deserve 5 Star ratings merely because its visually stunning.

Was I criticizing it as Serious Art by comparing it to a video game  ? - I think not.

Implying :P

And I agree with this. It's just that it seems like people are eager to discount the visuals as pointless fluff and then criticize the story, which seems to me like a slightly ridiculous approach, considering how the movie is almost solely about the visual experience.

I really meant that in regards to criticism of the story, and not to you specifically.

cool :)

The story was solid enough...just not fantastic.
Like I said before, I did appreciate the no deforestation message.

This review made me realize Avatar needs blue alien sex. Or at least some nipplage. I'm assuming there is none, thus fail.

Edit: Perhaps the DVD will rectify this: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/0 ... 11642.html

Finally watched it last night. Started off ok, last part with the action scenes were just as ridiculous as I imagined.

Too bad, because it seemed like it had promise to not go off into wacky land for the last part.

Oh well. 3D effects were cool. :P

Sorry that not everyone is willing to drop their standards like a bad habit every time they walk into a theater. :P

Story was ok. Its just that the characters were a bit iffy. Especially the bad marine guy who acted like his life was on the line until the bitter end. What did he have to lose?

The only reason people are knocking this movie is because it cost so much to make and made a big splash at the box office. If the movie was some 30 million $ so so also ran kinda movie nobody would be talking about it at all.

I'd give the movie an 8/10. Given that the movie relied on effects to sell itself it done alright in the other areas. How many times have we seen a great visual treat with totally utterly worthless storyline? I don't think Avatar deserves that kind of scrutiny. Almost all the people that I know that have seen it have enjoyed it saying the 3.5 hours passed really quickly.

If you want to really knock a movie of the past 12 months there is plenty worse than Avatar. Transformers 2, 2012, GI Joe. This coming year we have the A team, Alice in Wonderland etc etc. Most of them sorts of movies will also make a lot of money but will likely fail on every level. If James Cameron was a games developer he would make tech demos no doubt about it, but he might surprise you in the artistic style and gameplay from time to time.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
