I read somewhere (here?) that the Cave mobile phone games are pretty awful and the controls are terrible.
Ikaruga review now up in PLASMA BLOSSOM
Shmup on mobile phone is a bad idea, unless the phone has a d-pad as good as that on the DS... which is... not such a far-fetched idea.
There must be phones with dead-on d-pads out there, but I don't know any of them since I'm in Canada...
Canada is 2+ years behind Asia & Europe in adopting wireless technology...
I have space invaders on my cellphone, and heck, it feels as hard as DDP at times simply because the control will never do what you want it to do.

This causes to me a sensation of badness. - Stormwatch
Phone games are silly, I don't know why people want to have games on their cell phones. It's a phone people! You use it to make phone calls! If you want to play games, buy a GBA, PSP, or DS!! (Yes I know those three don't have many shmups, but I'm sick of hearing talk about shmups on phones. It's silly and pointless).
Shmups: It's all about blowing stuff up!
People who play cell phone games don't want a dedicated gaming machine. They just want something to play on the bus on the way to work. That's not worth buying a GBA for, but if you already have a phone you might as well take advantage of that.FatCobra wrote:Phone games are silly, I don't know why people want to have games on their cell phones. Yeah I'll throw something
Gradius for cellphones is rather crap.. Well seriously crap. I can only imagine how horrifying a CAVE shooter would be one a cellphone.
Personally the only cellphone game I like is Ys. But that's mainly because it's very simple to play(One button used for inventory/status access and like the first few games you kill enemies by running through them.)
It's good for slow days at work but not much else. If I had a job where I could get away with bringing my laptop in I wouldn't have ever touched cellphone gaming.

Games (including shmups) on cellphones aren't bad per se. But problems occur if you don't take the platform into consideration and just try to develop a game with the same gameplay (and controls) you'd have in a console title.
Some phones (like the SonyEricssonn k700i/k750i) have very good control knobs. There's no reason why playing a shooter with that wouldn't work. The problem is that those games are usually not developed for single devices, but for a variety of them, so you will always end up with some versions that control/play awfully due to the limitations of the hardware.
Sethsez is absolutely right, btw, cellphone games are little time killers. Whoever complains that they are different than games on the GBA completely misses the point.
There's a bunch of really excellent cellphone games that are a hell of a lot of fun to play. Oh yes, and the cellphone port of Aleste is actually very good.

Not strictly true. CPU speed is actually a bonus for any coding. Obviously having dedicated GFX hardware helps.sethsez wrote:Processor speed means nothing. I have a 40omhz PDA, and games are still framey with crap control.
The game I coded runs at a solid fps (30) which is acceptable. The balance of the game is different as it requires the ship to auto shoot and it has to consider that the input device is not the greatest thing on the planet. But you can do some good quality stuff. Its just that there are a lot of phone coders who are not really that hardcore so they write apps that are not very fast or efficent.
