You be Sir Bob...
You be Sir Bob...
Sitting at home watching the Live8 concert on TV it struck me that leaving aside the event's muddled politics, the line-up itself is, for the best part, pisspoor.
This got me thinking that if in Sir Bob's shoes, what would my own line-up be? Please understand that this has nothing to do with amassing a hearty throng of people in a field and entertaining them. This would be my own choice of line-up comprising of bands that to the best of my knowledge are still going and would probably only entertain...er...me.
Line-up in no particular order:
Interpol
Guided By Voices
Dinosaur jr
Bloc Party
Yeah Yeah Yeah's
Morrissey
Mark Lanegan
slayer
Sonic Youth
Afghan whigs
Mudhoney
The Shins
Pixies(well they have sort of reformed...)
The Hellacopors
And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead
Jim O'Rouke
So there you have it. Popular? No. Loud? Yes.
What would your fave line-up be?

Yer, this linup has been a bit shit. Velvet Revolver were pretty cool though, I saw them a few weeks ago and they rocked.
who should have played (instead of shit like Keane, Robbie Williams etc..)-
Radiohead
Pixies
Morrissey
Kaiser Chiefs (at the UK show)
Ash
Biffy Clyro
If I organised it
-
Cannabal Corpse
Lamb of God
Shadows Fall
Everytime I Die
Napalm Death
Dillinger Escape Plan
Sikth
The Black Dahlia Murder
Entombed
God Forbid
Mastadon
Trivium
Avenged Sevenfold
Cradle of Filth
Killswitch Engage
But I Doubt 200,000 people would have turned up.

Biffy totally slipped my mind aswell!SheSaidDutch wrote:I forgot Biffy and I've been listening to infinity land for a month straight
I too have given infinity land extended rotation on me hi-fi. I bought it with 'Blackened Sky' on the strength of the 'Only one word comes to mind' single and its one of my fave current LP's. 'Got wrong' is the track-RRRAAAWWKKIN!
If you'd told me in '91 that 15 years later i'd be listening to(and lovin') a scottish Nirvana, i'd have laughed harder than David Beckham's Live8 autocue writer...

I've only heard afew songs off "Blackened Sky" It's hard to think It's from the very same band, I need to purchase LP2 "The Vertigo of Bliss" I've only heard the single off that album but It's simply amazing "Questions and Answers"
I forgot to mention JetPlaneLanding also

True. It seems poppier and does'nt have the variety of 'infinity', where each track seems to be 3 songs masquerading as 1.SheSaidDutch wrote:I've only heard afew songs off "Blackened Sky" It's hard to think It's from the very same band
This happens alot, but if i buy 2 LP's from the same band at any one time, i always seem to gravitate towards one leaving the other to slowly stagnate on my shelves.
I'll probably get round to listening to 'Blackened Sky' by the time the 4th one comes out.

I'm not saying that no responsibility rests on the shoulders of Africa's leaders, most of whom seem only content to line their own pockets, while their populations starve, in spite of the fact that most African nations have enough natural resources to have a lot higher living standards then they have now. But I'd still hardly label this Live8's politics as "muddled."
Re: You be Sir Bob...
I agree with you Dave. The 'muddled politics' line was really just alluding to the fact that in the live events gone by, the object was to raise money and it was made crystal clear from the outset. This time we are being told that the concerts are to raise awareness. A couple of artists while on stage, actually stated that this was 'not about money' when quite clearly it is. I'm not naive enough to know that the two don't go hand-in-hand but maybe the organisers should have told all the artists.dave4shmups wrote:Yeah that line-up does suck. I honestly do hope that these concerts do raise awareness of Africa's horrendous situation.Howerver, the cynic in me thinks that when the last plastic Pepsi cup is picked up from Hyde Park today, and the last concert-goer has gone home to their semi in slough, come Monday morning, what will have changed?

As much as I'd like to list favorite bands from the past whose members may have gone on to the great beyond (Joy Division, Coltrane, etc.), I feel like I should keep it to bands that don't require raising the dead. Although that could be fun...
My lineup, in order of appearance:
Dub Trio
The Immortal Lee County Killers III
Antibalas
The Friends of Dean Martinez
The Cinematic Orchestra (with Tom Chant)
Coldcut (along with PC and Strictly Kev on eight turntables. Fuck yeah!)
The Fall
The Swans (reunited!, with guest appearance by Justin Broadrick)
Sonic Youth (good one, adam)
Public Enemy (with DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist on the ones and twos and a special guest appearance by Anthrax)
The Daktaris (with special guest appearance by James Brown for "Give it Up, Turn it Loose")

I don't know about the concert goers, but I hope that the concert has at least SOME impact on the leaders of the G8 who are meeting this week.
Well, if we're talking my ideal line-up, I'm throwing a few dead/defunct bands:
The Icarus Line
Therapy?
Red Animal War
Planes Mistaken For Stars - get the party started with some ROCK N FUCKIN ROLL
Sunny Day Real Estate - 'cause they cancelled on me twice then split
Quicksand - 'cos they're still the finest post-hardcore band I ever heard
The Dismemberment Plan
Juno - a '90 Pink Floyd that never got the recognition they deserved
Dillinger Escape Plan
Cursive - to play their 'Ugly Organ' LP beginning to end
Love Battery - ditto
American Head Charge
Deftones
Slipknot
Pearl Jam - still the finest stadium rock band in the world
T. Rex
David Bowie - but work from '69 to '74 only

Have you heard the FireTheft album by any chance? they were gonna tour the album, but I haven't really kept up to date on that, and since Nate is full time inthe Foo's and all.
My Trying Not To
I toyed with the idea of including dead/defunct bands from the off but figured that it was a bit hard on Sir Bob, who only had current day tat to work with.Marc wrote:Well, if we're talking my ideal line-up, I'm throwing a few dead/defunct bands:

In light of your raising the dead in the name of light entertainment, i'd also have to include:
Love
Nirvana
Black Flag
Dead Kennedys
The Ramones
The Smiths
The Misfits(i know they're still goin but it just aint the same wi'out Glenn)
Sebadoh
The Jesus Lizard
Scott Walker
The Byrds
Pavement
Screaming Trees
The Stooges
Blondie
Big Star
The Ronettes
Neil Young
Slint
Better make that a festival then...

Why thank you sir. Heard the Fire Theft, but it wasn't really my bag. Took the prog-rock template they laid down with the 'Rising Tide' LP and ran too far in that direction for me. Really long songs, lots of needless guitar widdling, and hippy-ish lyrics about rain forests and shit. A real disappointment, because their 'How It Feels...' LP is one of my all-time greats. You Sir have some good taste in music

You ever hear Juno? Nate played on a few tracks on their 2nd LP 'A Future Lived In Past Tense'. They're a three-guitar, feedback drenched prog-rock & roll machine (12 tracks totalling over an hour), difference between them and the Fire Theft is that Juno kick some serious arse. Highly recommended.
