Let's Play Battle Garegga special version

Post by Exarion »

Or rather, the not so special debug version. This is accessed by enabling service mode, and then holding A+B+C as the game starts up. There are no differences in the title screen, unlike later Raizing games, and you cannot change the board's region at the service menu:

The main difference I noticed was that when you press start, it gives you a course select screen:

Normal: Exactly what is sounds like, no differences.
Harder: Exactly what it sounds like, makes the game noticeably harder, I haven't tested to see if this is affected by the DIP switches for difficulty
Extended: Gives you the full game, even if you continue.
Special: Makes the game EXTREMELY hard, moreso than harder. Haven't tested to see if it's affected by DIP switches.
Direct: stage select mode, change stage with left and right.

Within the game, you can pause the game by pressing start and slow it by holding start. Unlike later games, you cannot access special functions by pressing C while the game is paused. More testing is needed to determine everything.

Interesting. You probably know about the invulnerability dipswitch in Bakraid, I'm guessing?

EDIT: Hmm, I have not gotten this to work correctly. When I enable Service mode, the game doesn't start until I select "Game Mode" from the menu. Even if I do that, I can't get to the course select when I press Start. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, or it involves the dipswitches I tweaked with (I have stage select enabled so I can choose the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stages), or the region, or whatever.

I have gotten a sprite viewer to show, though, which is pretty awesome (I think there's unused stuff in it too...ever seen a P-38-like bomber?). I wonder if other Raizing games have sprite viewers? Maybe Cave ones too? I've gotten sprite viewers to appear in Psikyo games, so...

The different game modes can be accessed without going into debug mode, as mentioned here.

So what exactly does "enabling service mode" mean for PCB users? Is this a dipswitch you are setting before powering on the game?

Yes, switch bank 1, switch 1 to on. to activate service mode you should see a list of options when the cab starts up. If you hold A+B+C while the cab powers up(before the options menu appears), then start, the game will be in debug mode. You also can't access stage select or pause/slow without this code. It isn't as big of a discovery as the special versions of other games, but it's still something.
