Some stuff that just popped up in IRC.
I loved Battle Bakraid until I tried playing for score.
I loved Guwange until I tried playing for score.
Strangely enough, I hated Progear until I tried playing for score.

Honestly- Garegga (and by extension I never really tried Bakraid for score afterwards).
I probably haven't given them too much of a good run so take whatever I say with a grain of salt, but the more advanced stuff in that game started to sound like I'd have to purposely kill myself to manage things properly O.o

I loved batsugun until I tried playing for score.
(but it's still a pretty chill game so I will probably get back to it occassionally.)
yeah, and the same could be said about most multiple loops shooters.

I guess I'm the only one who thought mushihimesama was pretty mediocre until I started playing for score.
Carpal tunnel inducing button pressing isn't for everyone I suppose.

There are seperate rankings for Autofire and non-autofire
So you can ditch the carpal tunnel thing if you really want.

I thought 19XX was a good game until I played for score. No-miss/no-bomb/medals/100% destruction all at once is a nightmare.

I play the ps2 version so I've always known its there, but I feel it detracts from the overall experience in a way, plus my current stick doesn't have enough buttons to accomodate both A and C autofire. I'd probably only use this if I was on a controller. On the plus side a sore wrist lets me know when to take a break from the game
Edit - I'm curious to where the slight gains in autofire in original mode are obtained.

I hated Thunder Dragon II until I played it for score. 30 restarts later because I kept missing 50,000 point items and I hated it again.

Indeed, 19XX is not a fun scoring game, so I'm with you there. Don't forget 'destroy bosses asap for highest ranking/multiplier' too.
Cannot think of anything immediately besides this, but it's pretty noteworthy.
