I know we discussed it elsewhere, but worth mentioning Herbie Hancock's Sextant. Early 70's pre-funk and atmosphere. There's some riffs I'd thought were first developed in the early 80's, and was shocked to find them here. Might take a bit to warm up to, but obviously an important album.

Blue Cheer "Outside Inside" - I don't actually own this yet. My buddy who works around the corner has a little turntable at his station and plays records as he works. I go over there a couple times a week just to listen. This is my most wanted record right now.

Shrinebuilder s/t - It's pretty decent I guess. As with alot of Wino stuff it's a bit too darkly melodramatic for me. My little bro gave me this for Christmas. He thinks I like Wino more than I do because every time the guy puts out a record I get it for birthday or Christmas. I suppose I shouldn't complain since he could easily do worse!

The Black Keys "Magic Potion" - Late to the party with these guys too. Heard for the first time just a couple months ago. This album is brilliant. Especially the guitar. The other stuff that I've heard seems to not be nearly as good.

Vincebus Eruptum is great and ever since they put it out on CD in 1993 it has been really really easy to find and listen to. Outside Inside is, to me, the better record and unfortunately it was never rereleased on any format by a major label. It has been difficult. Either spend stupid money on various vinyl reissues (not worth it) or take chances with used originals on ePay for $30. Also not worth it.

BUT! Just the other day after being outbid for a $30 used one for the umpteenth time I discovered THIS AWESOMENESS

Polysics - We Ate the Machine

Going to see these guys play in NYC tomorrow ....I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT!

Their newer album "Absolute Polysics" is pretty good too. It's like "We Ate the Machine" part 2 but shorter, which imo is just the right length before it starts to wear on you.

The show was pretty damned amazing. Definitely the most hilarious concert I've been to... never have I seen people so willing to spin around in circles or do jumping jacks on command before, nor have I seen a keyboard player who whips out pom-poms and a cheap plastic recorder out of nowhere while acting like a robot. There were even some golden engrish after-song banter quotes like "let's screaming together!" there too

So back on topic I just bought this CD at the show:

Yeah, I've listened to it maybe three times since it leaked. My opinions are kinda mixed--some of the riffs are fucking gorgeous, but structurally the songs are a lot simpler and less interesting than his old stuff. I really wanted the songs to take revelatory turns and develop in interesting ways, but it never happened for me. In one of his interviews he stated that he didn't like how inconsistent his old work was and that the new album would be "monotonous," but I think some of those contrasts gave old Burzum its charm. Varg has succeeded in making a monotonous album -- I'd like to think that he's intelligent enough to realize that monotony is actually a shitty goal for an album and make something more interesting.

Aye, it's fairly clear he hasn't been listening to anything since he was imprisoned, really. There are loads of clichés from the mid-90s in the riffing. A friend was joking that he's just getting away with pretending he hasn't heard Ravishing Grimness and basing an entire album on it.

The monotony doesn't disappoint me so much, though. Glemselens Elv is my favourite track on it, and it's the longest and arguably the least dynamic.
