Get your patches & DLC for any Classic Xbox games now...
Before Microsoft terminates service on April 15...
http://gamerscoreblog.com/press/archive ... gh789.aspx
Just FYI to those who still have Xbox 1 game libraries (as there was a surprisingly many good games on it).
This also affects online play, but losing access to patches/updates/DLC at this point is probably the bigger deal. So if you plan to play any Classic Xbox game and want any of its Xbox Live content, grab it now while you still can or lose it forever.
EDIT: Seems the PR is wrong, and all game DLC for Classic Xbox games have been terminated immediately?!

I hate your signature and want to punch Shane Bettenhausen in the face, whoever that is.
Just sayin'.
Oh yeah about the thread, that's dumb, screw you Microsoft, all that jazz.

He gets that a lot...ncp wrote:want to punch Shane Bettenhausen in the face, whoever that is. Just sayin'.
Wonder if they'll treat Xbox 360 game updates and DLC the same way 10 years from now... if so, another reason the increasingly popular "release almost finished version + update it to final with patches at launch" model on consoles is far from ideal, if you enjoy playing previous generation games long after release. It's the old PC-style release model, but on PCs you could still patch your game 10 years later.ncp wrote:Oh yeah about the thread, that's dumb, screw you Microsoft, all that jazz.

There's a site that archives the 360 updates, so you can get them without logging your console to internet:
http://xboxupdates.24.tl/
So I guess, at least for the 360, there's an alternative way in the future. All you need is a transfer kit, and you get those updates to your 360 HD working (Or so I heard, I don't have a 360 HD yet).

Wow, this is a good point. Everybody has been so up about online play while neglecting patches and DLC. Is there a list of Xbox games with DLC? I don't remember there being that many.

The Hurricane packs for the original Xbox Ninja Gaiden (if you have that version) are worth getting as they are quite a bit different than what was collected on Ninja Gaiden Black.Ganelon wrote:Wow, this is a good point. There was also meaningful DLC for some Xbox Star Wars games, like Yavin station for KOTOR, and Jabba's palace for Battlefront. One of my favorite arena combat games, Unreal Championship 2 The Liandri Conflict, also had optional DLC characters to play as.Acid King wrote:The Hurricane packs for the original Xbox Ninja Gaiden (if you have that version) are worth getting as they are quite a bit different than what was collected on Ninja Gaiden Black.Ganelon wrote:Wow, this is a good point. Goddamnit, I wanted those.Acid King wrote:The Hurricane packs for the original Xbox Ninja Gaiden (if you have that version) are worth getting as they are quite a bit different than what was collected on Ninja Gaiden Black.Ganelon wrote:Wow, this is a good point. I imagine that perhaps someday each company will re-release this content by itself, since nobody likes putting work into content that won't benefit them.
I have to hand it to Microsoft though, they never said that they'd be keeping the Xbox 1 stuff going in perpetuity but everybody just assumed they would (remember the EA vs. MS hosting stuff).
Re: Get your patches & DLC for any Classic Xbox games now...
Yeah, I'm kinda kicking myself for selling my Xbox with those downloads on it but I probably would never go back and play them anyway. You gotta figure with the way emulation has evolved, eventually they'll appear and be playable on the PC... or atleast I hope they will.Ed Oscuro wrote: Goddamnit, I wanted those.

The way they just handled this bodes really badly for anything online in the future. Sure, it's unlikely the successor won't support the games or force you to buy them again. But 20 years and a few generations from now, do you really think they'll continue to support the current model of Xbox Live?
People expressed hope Live would be like Steam and continue into perpetuity but given how lackadaisically Microsoft pulled this off, it doesn't seem like they really care about preserving the past. Not specifically mentioning any new features to add some silver lining also means they don't think this announcement will matter much to most folks. A sad implication for the digital future indeed...

Really though, the bottom line is that nothing that's not community supported will die. Companies don't make a dime off the old servers, so why keep them going? Only games with sub fees (BLECH) are likely to survive.
In short, boil the lot of 'em.

Oh that damn fine print.

It kinda sucks, just even more reason to mod your xbox though. As if there wasn't enough already.
